Development of Alkaline Oxidative Dissolution Methods for Chromium (III) Compounds Present in Hanford Site Tank Sludges (open access)

Development of Alkaline Oxidative Dissolution Methods for Chromium (III) Compounds Present in Hanford Site Tank Sludges

The high-level radioactive waste sludge in the underground storage tanks at the Hanford Site contains various chromium solid phases. Dissolution and removal of chromium from tank waste sludges is desirable prior to high-level waste vitrification because increased volume is required to incorporate the residual chromium. Unfortunately, dissolution of chromium from the sludge to form Cr(OH){sub 4}{sup -} through treatment with heated NaOH solution (also used to dissolve aluminum phases and metathesize phosphates to sodium salts) generally has been unsuccessful in tests with both simulated and genuine Hanford waste sludges. Oxidative dissolution of the Cr(III) compounds to form soluble chromate has been proposed as an alternative chromium solid phase dissolution method and results of limited prior testing have been reported. The present systematic tests investigated oxygen gas, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium persulfate oxidants to dissolve Cr(III) under alkaline conditions to form soluble chromate. Permanganate and ozone also were considered for testing but were thought to be of secondary interest because of the insoluble residue (MnO{sub 2} from permanganate) and complex equipment (necessary to generate ozone) implicit with use of these reagents. The oxygen and hydrogen peroxide reagents leave no condensable residue and sodium persulfate only leaves soluble sodium sulfate. Crystalline Cr(OH){sub …

Prosthetic knee design by simulation (open access)

Prosthetic knee design by simulation

Although 150,000 total knee replacement surgeries are performed annually in North America, current designs of knee prostheses have mechanical problems that include a limited range of motion, abnormal gait patterns, patellofemoral joint dysfunction, implant loosening or subsidence, and excessive wear. These problems fall into three categories: failure to reproduce normal joint kinematics, which results in altered limb function; bone-implant interface failure; and material failure. Modern computer technology can be used to design, prototype, and test new total knee implants. The design team uses the full range of CAD-CAM to design and produce implant prototypes for mechanical and clinical testing. Closer approximation of natural knee kinematics and kinetics is essential for improved patient function and diminished implant loads. Current knee replacement designs are based on 19th Century theories that the knee moves about a variable axis of rotation. Recent research has shown, however, that knee motion occurs about two fixed, offset axes of rotation. These aces are not perpendicular to the long axes of the bones or to each other, and the axes do not intersect. Bearing surfaces of mechanisms that move about axes of rotation are surfaces of revolution of those axes which advanced CAD technology can produce. Solids with …

New approach to orthopedic implant design (open access)

New approach to orthopedic implant design

This report describes the accomplishments of a three year LDRD project, aimed at developing computational models and methodologies for improving prosthetic joint design. The investigators developed human models as well as prosthetic joint models. Input data came both from high resolution scans performed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and from data provided by collaborators. Results of the approach, in addition to being presented at scientific meetings, are being used to obtain US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in the process of putting new implant designs on the market.

Inductive Resistivity Logging in Steel-Cased Boreholes. SBIR Phase 2 Progress Report (open access)

Inductive Resistivity Logging in Steel-Cased Boreholes. SBIR Phase 2 Progress Report

SBIR Phase 2 project 40145-97-I calls for the design and construction of a prototype inductive logging device to measure formation resistivity from within a steel-cased borehole. The SCIL (Steel Casing Induction Logger) tool is intended for reservoir characterization and process monitoring in an oil field environment. This report summarizes findings from the initial project period. In this phase, bench model measurements were made to test casing compensation schemes, numerical models were calculated to optimize the tool configuration and associated formation sensitivity and the preliminary design of the tool was completed. The bench tests constitute fundamental research on determining the characteristics of steel well casing and on developing means of separating the effects of the casing and the formation. This technology is crucial to the success of the project and significant progress has been made towards the goal of recovering the formation resistivity from inside the casing. Next, a series of sensitivity and tool configuration studies have been completed through partner Dr. David Alumbaugh at Sandia National Laboratories. These numerical results help to optimize the tool configuration and allow one to calculate the expected formation sensitivity. These models are preliminary to data interpretation software to be developed in the next project …
