Advanced turbine systems program -- Conceptual design and product development. Final report

This Final Technical Report presents the accomplishments on Phase 2 of the Advanced Turbine Systems (ATS). The ATS is an advanced, natural gas fired gas turbine system that will represent a major advance on currently available industrial gas turbines in the size range of 1--20 MW. This report covers a market-driven development. The Market Survey reported in Section 5 identified the customer`s performance needs. This market survey used analyses performed by Solar turbine Incorporated backed up by the analyses done by two consultants, Research Decision Consultants (RDC) and Onsite Energy Corporation (Onsite). This back-up was important because it is the belief of all parties that growth of the ATS will depend both on continued participation in Solar`s traditional oil and gas market but to a major extent on a new market. This new market is distributed electrical power generation. Difficult decisions have had to be made to meet the different demands of the two markets. Available resources, reasonable development schedules, avoidance of schedule or technology failures, probable acceptance by the marketplace, plus product cost, performance and environmental friendliness are a few of the complex factors influencing the selection of the Gas Fired Advanced Turbine System described in Section 3. Technical feasibility of transuranic tank waste processing in high-level waste vitrification facility

The objective of this study is to determine the technical feasibility of processing transuranic tank waste in a high-level waste vitrification facility. This is achieved by performing an impact assessment of a reference case high-level waste facility modified to separately process transuranic waste. Data are presented for Hanford Site transuranic wastes and are compared against established waste acceptance criteria for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant program. Schedule and cost impacts are evaluated for the proposed transuranic campaign.

Second generation advanced reburning for high efficiency NO{sub x} control. Progress report No. 3, April 1--June 30, 1996

This project develops a family of novel NO{sub x} control technologies, Second Generation Advanced Reburning (SGAR), which has the potential to achieve 90+% NO{sub x} control at a significantly lower cost than selective catalytic reduction. Phase I consists of six tasks: Task 1.1, project coordination and reporting deliverables; Task 1.2, kinetics of Na{sub 2}CO{sub 3} reactions with flue gas components; Task 1.3, 20 kW optimization studies; Task 1.4, 20 kW process development tests; Task 1.5, mechanism development and modeling; and Task 1.6, design methodology and application. This third reporting period included both experimental and modeling activities. Tests continued at the Controlled Temperature Tower (CTT), and the results have been reduced and are reported. A study on high- temperature reactions of sodium promoters (Task 1.2) is underway at the University of Texas in Austin (UT). A brief literature review on high-temperature sodium reactions is included in this report. A high- temperature flow system with GC analysis was prepared at the University of Texas at Austin for the experimental program. Modeling focused on description of NO-NH{sub 3} interaction in the burnout zone.

The transuranium elements: From neptunium and plutonium to element 112

Beginning in the 1930`s, both chemists and physicists became interested in synthesizing new artificial elements. The first transuranium element, Np, was synthesized in 1940. Over the past six decades, 20 transuranium elements have been produced. A review of the synthesis is given. The procedure of naming the heavy elements is also discussed. It appears feasible to produce elements 113 and 114. With the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator, it should be possible to reach the superheavy elements in the region of the spherical Z=114 shell, but with fewer neutrons than the N=184 spherical shell. 57 refs, 6 figs.

The overall objective of this project is to demonstrate that a development program based on advanced reservoir management methods can significantly improve oil recovery. The demonstration plan includes developing a control area using standard reservoir management techniques and comparing the performance of the control area with an area developed using advanced reservoir management methods. Specific goals to attain the objective are: (1) to demonstrate that a development drilling program and pressure maintenance program, based on advanced reservoir management methods, can significantly improve oil recovery compared with existing technology applications, and (2) to transfer the advanced methodologies to oil and gas producers in the Permian Basin and elsewhere in the U.S. oil and gas industry.

This report provides a summary of the radiological surveys performed in support of the operational environmental monitoring program at the Hanford Site. The Second Quarter 1996 survey results and the status of actions required from current and past reports are summarized below: All the routine environmental radiological surveys scheduled during April, May, and June 1996 were completed. One Hundred twenty- five environmental radiological surveys were performed during the second quarter of 1996, twenty nine at the active waste sites and ninety six at the inactive waste sites. Contamination above background levels Wag found at three of the active waste sites and fifteen of the inactive waste sites. Contamination levels as high as 65,000 disintegrations per minute (dpm) were reported. Of these contaminated surveys seven were in Underground Radioactive Material (URM) areas and one was in an unposted area. The contamination found within three of the URM areas was immediately cleaned up and no further action was required. In the remaining four sites the areas were posted and will require decontamination. At the site where there was no posting, the contamination was below action levels, however, Site Support Services was notified. Radiological Problem Reports (RPR`s) were issued and the sites were …

Rapid characterization of mixed waste by FTIR-fiber optic method

Tank waste characterization requires various analytical systems to identify and quantify the chemical composition and water content of Hanford Site high-level waste. Safe long-term storage of the waste depends on its chemical and physical data. An analytical database is also the key to the design and implementation of pre-treatment and disposal processes. To provide a faster, cheaper, and safer technique to monitor the moisture content of tank waste, two types of near-infrared (NIR) diffuse reflectance fiber optic probes interfaced to a Fouiier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry system were studied. Lower absorptivities in the NIR region enable longer pathlengths to be used leading to easier nondestructive sampling. Both overtone and combination bands Of Water can be used for moisture measurements. While a previous report` provides evidence for the feasibility of using fiber optic probes, the results were strictly qualitative. In this study, the fiber optic probe is installed in a hot cell making it possible to characterize highly radioactive mixed waste rapidly and quantitatively. In seeking a strategy to identify individual species in the waste with minimal sample preparation, a modular transfer optic system equipped with a mid-infrared diffuse reflectance sampler was assessed. In this quarter we jumped ahead and performed Task 5 which is testing to get empirical energy saving data. One 4` X 3` horizontal Incredibling prototype and one black and one white conventional control blinds with the same size were delivered to the Lawrence Berekely Laboratories Mobile Test Facility in Reno. The blinds are still in testing since we had only two sunny days in the month of June and we encountered some hardware problem with the computers at the lab.

Damage Initiation and Propagation in Metal Laminates

The metal laminates proposed here for aircraft structures are Al alloy interlayers between Al alloy based metal matrix composite (MMC) plates reinforced with Si carbide particles. Properties to be tailored for jet engine fan containment and wing and auxiliary support structures include the important property fracture toughness. A method was developed for simulating and predicting crack initiation/growth using finite element analysis and fracture mechanics. An important key in predicting the failure is the tie- break slideline with prescribed (chosen based on J Integral calculations) effective plastic strain to failure in elements along the slideline. More development of the method is needed, particularly in its correlation with experimental data from various fracture toughness and strength tests of metal laminates. Results show that delamination at the interface of the ductile interlayer and MMC material can add significantly to the energy required to propagate a crack through a metal laminate. 11 figs, 7 refs.
