In-plant testing of microbubble column flotation

Microbubble column flotation (MCF) was developed at the Virginia Center for Coal and Minerals Processing (VCCMP) for the selective recovery of fine particles. Bench-scale test work conducted at VCCMP, largely under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), showed that the technology worked well for both coal and mineral applications. For the technology to be commercially successful, however, a full-scale demonstration of the MCF technology was deemed necessary. This report summarizes the results of work performed under the DOE project entitled In-plant Testing of Microbubble Column Flotation.'' The objectives of this research and development effort were to duplicate the bench-scale performance of the MCF process in a full-scale unit, to verify the scale-up procedure developed in an earlier project, and to demonstrate the applicability of the MCF technology to the coal industry.

NO sub x destruction in diffusion flame environments

This research is concerned with reburning, which is an NO{sub x} abatement technique involving the injection of secondary fuel into the post flame of a furnace. The specific objectives of this research are to determine whether heterogeneities inherent in diffusion flame environments can be exploited to achieve greater reductions in NO than can be achieved in premixed systems. The research project described here is but a first step to explore this question, and should be viewed more as a screening study rather than as completed research, the results of which are completely understood. The problem was attacked through both experimentation and theoretical modeling. Experiments employed a bench scale, laminar, counter-flow, diffusion flame, which was designed to simulate the stretched diffusion flamelets that arise at the interface between turbulent fuel and oxidant jets. Data gathered were of two types. First, NO destruction from the integral system was investigated through parametric studies in which only inlet and outlet species and flows were measured. Three different experimental configurations were examined, under a wide range of operating conditions, with emphasis on reburning under overall fuel lean conditions. Coal surface control for advanced fine coal flotation

The primary objective in the scope of this research project is to develop advanced flotation methods for coal cleaning in order to achieve near total pyritic-sulfur removal at 90% Btu recovery, using coal samples procured from three major US coal seams. Concomitantly, the ash content of these coals is to be reduced to 6% or less. Investigation of mechanisms for the control of coal and pyrite surfaces prior to fine coal flotation is the main aspect of the project objectives. The results of this research are to be made available to ICF Kaiser Engineers who are currently working on the Engineering Development of Advanced Flotation under a separate contract with DOE under the Acid Rain Control Initiative program. A second major objective is to investigate factors involved in the progressive weathering and oxidation of coal that had been exposed to varying degrees of weathering, namely, open to the atmosphere, covered and in an argon-inerted'' atmosphere, over a period of twelve months. (Development of high spectral resolution lidar technology)

The first year of this grant has been devoted to the design and construction of an upgraded version of the University of Wisconsin High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL). The new system incorporates additional data channels to measure depolarization and multiple scattering in the lidar return. Schematic diagrams describing the new configurations are attached to this report. Increases in optical efficiency and receiver aperture, coupled with improvements in the stiffness and the thermal stability of the mechanical system are expected to significantly improve the performance of the instrument. Most components of the system are nearly completed and system integration is about to begin. The HSRL is committed to participate in the NASA FIRE cirrus experiment during November and December of this year. Our progress is completing HSRL subsystems is outlined in the following paragraphs. 3 figs.

Polarizability corrections in stimulated Raman propagation

Traditional descriptions of stimulated Raman scattering relate the various Stokes and anti-Stokes fields to the incident pump field by means of a polarizability (tensor). This description is usable for pulsed radiation but it fails when the pump carrier frequency coincides with a resonant frequency of the medium. We here describe a simple procedure for correcting the traditional polarizability approximation for pulse envelopes so as to account for effects of finite pump bandwidth. The correction amounts to the introduction of an auxiliary field envelope that incorporates pump dispersion. We apply this procedure to the equations for a degenerate, Doppler broadened ensemble of three-level atoms, in which the uppermost (virtual) level is close to resonance with the pump carrier frequency. This system becomes a two-level Raman system, but with a correction to the Raman Hamiltonian and the propagation equation. The plane-wave propagation equations presented include dispersive as well as Raman effects, and allow arbitrary combinations of field polarizations. We comment on several incidental aspects of Raman propagation, including dynamic Stark shifts, sublevel averages and fluence equations.

It does, however, specify that a document will be developed to guide the migration from the current site environment to that envisioned by the new architecture. The goal of this document, the SRS Computing Architecture Migration Guide, is to identify specific strategic and tactical tasks which would have to be completed to fully implement the architectural vision for site computing as well as a recommended sequence and timeframe for addressing these tasks. It takes into account the expected availability of technology, the existing installed base, and interdependencies among architectural components and objectives.

Final Report of Investigation of the Acoustic Decay Instability in Laser Plasma Interaction

we have made extensive studies of the Ion Acoustic Decay Instability (IADI) in laser-produced plasmas using the Janus (Phoenix) laser at LLNL. We found that the threshold is quite low and that, in planar plasmas, it can be reduced to homogeneous-plasma, collisional values. These observations are consistent with the plasma-density profiles calculated by hydrodynamic simulations using the LASNEX computer code run with a flux limiter of f = 0.1. We have designed experiments to study the IADI in larger plasmas using the Nova laser. 2 refs., 1 fig.

Department management of the Ross Aviation, Inc. , contract aircraft major spare parts inventory, Albuquerque, New Mexico

The purpose of this audit was to determine whether the Department of Energy's (Department) management of its contract with Ross Aviation, Inc. (Ross) provided reasonable assurance that the inventory of aircraft major spare parts at Ross was economical and efficient. The audit disclosed that approximately $447,000 (acquisition and interest carrying costs) of low-use major spare parts was excessive. Internal control deficiencies which fostered the excessive inventory included: (1) Ross had set stock levels without considering such factors as consumption or projected needs; and (2) the Department had not reviewed inventory quantities when appraising Ross' property management. The Albuquerque Operations Office (AL) agreed to take the corrective actions recommended in the report.

As scintillating plate calorimetry is a viable option for the SDC detector, it is imperative that the phase space of passive and active materials be explored in a systematic fashion. To this end, we have examined several different configurations of passive and active materials as a function of incident energy, to see what the resolution and e/h characteristics are of each of these configurations. Evaluation of the Crude Oil Policy Model (COPM) and recommended modifications

This is an evaluation of the Crude Oil Policy Model (COPM) and the assumptions driving the estimates of future crude oil production and abandonments attributable to an accelerated federal oil R&D program which were cited in the National Energy Strategy. This evaluation focuses on the logic and inputs to the model itself, and their impact on the NES estimates. A plan for making the recommended enhancements is also discussed. A parallel effort is also now in progress to make a number of model enhancements that will facilitate the analysis of RCRA impacts. This effort is scheduled to be completed for the Office of Planning and Environment in mid-August. A description of these enhancements is also included in our plan for correcting and enhancing the COPM.

Proof-of-principle test for thermoelectric generator for diesel engines; Final report

In September of 1987, the principals of what is now Hi-Z TECHNOLOGY, INC. applied to the National Bureau of Standards (now National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST) under the Energy Related Inventions Program. The invention was entitled ``Thermoelectric Generator for Diesel Engines.`` The National Institute of Standards and Technology evaluated the invention and on January 12, 1989 forwarded Recommendation Number 455 to the Department of Energy (DOE). This recommendation informed the DOE that the invention had been selected for recommendation by the NIST for possible funding by the DOE. Following the recommendation of the NIST, the DOE contacted Hi-Z to work out a development program for the generator. A contract for a grant to design, fabricate, and test a Proof-of-Principle exhaust powered thermoelectric generator for Diesel engines was signed October 19, 1989. Hi-Z provided the thermoelectric modules used in the generator as their contribution to the project. The purpose of this Grant Program was to design, build, and test a small-scale, Proof-of-Principle thermoelectric generator for a Diesel engine. 15 figs., 1 tab.

The report is organized into the four categories proposed at our April, 1991, Advisory Group meeting: safety, cost-benefit analysis, science education, and communications. Within each category, some change of focus from that of the Advisory Group has been required, to reflect the findings of our interviews. This report limits itself to describing our findings. An accompanying memo draws some tentative conclusions.

Argon Excluder Foam Compression Data

The argon excluder is designed to reduce the media density of the dead space between the internal modules of the end calorimeters and the concave convex head to less than that of argon. The design of the excluder includes a thin circular stainless steel plate welded to the inner side of the convex pressure vessel head at a radius of 26 and 15/16 inches. It is estimated that this plate will experience a pressure differential of approximately 40 pounds per square inch. A inner foam core is incorporated into the design of the excluder as structural support. This engineering note outlines the compression data for the foam used in the north end calorimeter argon excluder. Four test samples of approximately the same dimensions were cut and machined from large blocks of the poured foam. Two of these test samples were then subjected to varying compression magnitudes until failure. For this test failure was taken to mean plastic yielding or the point at which deformation increases without a corresponding increase in loading. The third sample was subjected to a constant compressive stress for an extended period of time, to identify any 'creeping' effects. Finally, the fourth sample was cooled to cryogenic …
