Stimulation model for lenticular sands: Volume 2, Users manual

This User's Manual contains information for four fracture/proppant models. TUPROP1 contains a Geertsma and de Klerk type fracture model. The section of the program utilizing the proppant fracture geometry data from the pseudo three-dimensional highly elongated fracture model is called TUPROPC. The analogous proppant section of the program that was modified to accept fracture shape data from SA3DFRAC is called TUPROPS. TUPROPS also includes fracture closure. Finally there is the penny fracture and its proppant model, PENNPROP. In the first three chapters, the proppant sections are based on the same theory for determining the proppant distribution but have modifications to support variable height fractures and modifications to accept fracture geometry from three different fracture models. Thus, information about each proppant model in the User's Manual builds on information supplied in the previous chapter. The exception to the development of combined treatment models is the penny fracture and its proppant model. In this case, a completely new proppant model was developed. A description of how to use the combined treatment model for the penny fracture is contained in Chapter 4. 2 refs.

Report of the Intermediate-)ital p)/sub Perpendicular/ Detector Group: A Beauty Spectrometer for the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider)

A ''Beauty Spectrometer'' has been designed for studies of B physics at the SSC. The ultimate goal is a definitive measurement of CP violation in the B system. The spectrometer consists of two stages and occupies one side of an intermediate-luminosity interaction region. An upstream, or intermediate, stage extends from the interaction point to 14 m and covers the angular region from 57 mrad (3.3 degree) to 350 mrad (20 degree). The forward stage extends to 77 m and to angles down to 5.7 mrad. The design includes silicon microstrip detectors, conventional tracking, momentum analysis, and hadron and lepton identification. While no fundamental problems have been found, the detector must deal with unprecedented particles fluxes, trigger rates, and data rates. 11 refs., 10 figs., 5 tabs.

Geothermal investigations in Idaho: Geothermal resource analysis in Twin Falls County, Idaho:

Increased utilization of the geothermal resource in the Twin Falls - Banbury area of southern Idaho has resulted in noticeable declines in the artesian head of the system. In order to determine the nature of the declines, a network of wells was identified for monitoring shut-in pressures and temperatures. In addition, a compilation of data and reconnaissance of the areal geology was undertaken in order to better understand the geologic framework and its relationship to the occurrence of the thermal waters in the system. The results of the monitoring indicate that while water temperatures have remained constant, the system shows a gradual overall decline in artesian pressure superimposed on fluctuations caused by seasonal use of the system. Well testing and the similarity of hydrographs resulting from well monitoring throughout the area suggest that there are no major hydrologic barriers to thermal water movement in the system and that wells are affected by increases and decreases in utilization of nearby wells. 46 refs., 13 figs., 1 tab.

Let A be any n x n positive definite matrix and B any n x n non-negative definite matrix. In an earlier paper we showed that for each n there is a real number t/sub n/> 2 such that if t <t/sub n/ then the solution X of the matrix equation A²X + XA² + tAXA = B is non-negative definite. For n = 2, t₂ = infinity and for n = 3, t₃ = 8. In this report we show that t₄ = 4, t₅ <3.02048507 and t₆ <2.62120330.

Post-Test Analyses of Aqueous Batteries Developed for Electric Propulsion : Summary Report for January 1985-September 1986

This document is a summary of the activities conducted on post-test examination of aqueous electric-vehicle batteries from January 1985 to September 1986. The post-test analyses were conducted to determine the causes of performance degradation (e.g., capacity decline, power loss, self-discharge) in lead-acid and nickel/iron batteries. For the lead-acid batteries, the primary causes of capacity decline were generally found to be morphological changes in the positive active material, corrosion of the positive electrode grid, and loss of contact between the active material and grid in the positive electrode. For the nickel/iron batteries, the primary factors responsible for performance degradation were transport of iron through the separator to the nickel electrode and loss of contact between the active materials and current collector. These results have permitted more accurate assessments of current technical progress in development of aqueous electric-vehicle batteries and have helped to direct future R and D efforts.

Review of the Analyses of the Doppler-Effect Measurements in SEFOR (Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor)

The SEFOR experimental results and the three original analyses are reviewed and discussed. The emphasis of the review is placed on aspects that are pertinent to a possible modern re-analysis of the experimental results. Looking at the analysis results in terms of zero and first order effects shows that the zero order effects, the Doppler constant of the two SEFOR cores, are obtained by the three analyses in satisfactory agreement. But the first order effects, but temperature variation of this Doppler-constant quantity, cannot be determined with any informative accuracy. Since this is likely due to limitations in the experiments, a re-analysis - except for methodological reasons - does not appear to be fruitful.

Decontamination and Decommissioning of the Argonne National Laboratory East Area Radioactively Contaminated Surplus Facilities : Final Report

ANL has decontaminated and decommissioned (D and D) seven radiologically contaminated surplus facilities at its Illinois site: a ''Hot'' Machine Shop (Building 17) and support facilities; Fan House No. 1 (Building 37), Fan House No. 2 (Building 38), the Pangborn Dust Collector (Building 41), and the Industrial Waste Treatment Plant (Building 34) for exhaust air from machining of radioactive materials. Also included were a Nuclear Materials Storage Vault (Building 16F) and a Nuclear Research Laboratory (Building 22). The D and D work involved dismantling of all process equipment and associated plumbing, ductwork, drain lines, etc. After radiation surveys, floor and wall coverings, suspended ceilings, room partitions, pipe, conduit and electrical gear were taken down as necessary. In addition, underground sewers were excavated. The grounds around each facility were also thoroughly surveyed. Contaminated materials and soil were packaged and shipped to a low-level waste burial site, while nonactive debris was buried in the ANL landfill. Clean, reusable items were saved, and clean metal scrap was sold for salvage. After the decommissioning work, each building was torn down and the site relandscaped. The project was completed in 1985, ahead of schedule, with substantial savings.

Fundamental studies of the mechanisms of slag deposit formation: Final report

The kinetics of ash deposition on utility boilers have been studied. A heated tube furnace system was used in the study. Areas of consideration in the deposition mechanics were: close space knowledge of chemical composition and distribution of inorganic constituents in coal, transformations and reactions of the inorganic constituents in the flame, ash transport mechanisms, initial adhesion of ash particles to heat transfer surfaces and subsequently to each other to form a deposit, and further interactions of the deposited ash to grow a strong deposit. Interactions of deposited ash that cause changes in physical and chemical properties in an aged deposit are due to processes such as sintering, chemical reactions, and melting. The degree of these changes increases as the deposit grows from the heat transfer surfaces where it forms. All of these changes during the deposit formation process are coal-specific and are strongly dependent on the boiler configuration and operating conditions. 18 refs., 55 figs., 42 tabs.

Reggeon Field Theory and the phases of QCD

We propose a Reggeon Field Theory phase diagram involving Sub-critical and Super-critical Pomeron behavior and the Expanding Disc. We describe the derivation of Reggeon Field Theory from QCD using infra-red analysis of the reggeon diagrams of the spontaneously broken theory. Matching the Reggeon Field Theory phase-diagram to that of lattice QCD with many fermions has significant implications for the chiral properties of continuum QCD when the number of flavors is less than the maximum allowed by asymptotic freedom. 19 refs., 7 figs.

Comments on model validation

The paper points out the importance and usefulness of recognizing the separate roles of processes and geometric structures in predictive modeling of the performance of a nuclear waste repository or underground injection disposal of toxic wastes. Based on this a validation procedure is proposed. Furthermore, two stages and three elements of validation are described and discussed. Finally, comments are made on the choice of measurables to be used to compare modeling results and field data in the validation procedure. 8 refs.

Structure and properties of nanophase TiO/sub 2/

Ultrafine-grained, nanophase samples of TiO/sub 2/ (rutile) were synthesized by the gas-condensation method and subsequent in-situ compaction, and then studied by transmission electron microscopy, Vickers hardness measurements, and positron annihilation spectroscopy as a function of sintering temperature. The nanophase compacts densified rapidly above 500/sup 0/C, with only a small increase in grain size. The hardness values obtained by this method are comparable to or greater than coarser-grained compacts, but at temperatures 400 to 600/sup 0/C lower than conventional sintering temperatures and without the need for sintering aids. 11 refs., 3 figs.

An Analysis of Recent Measurements of the Temperature of theCosmic Microwave Background Radiation

This paper presents an analysis of the results of recent temperature measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). The observations for wavelengths longer than 0.1 cm are well fit by a blackbody spectrum at 2.74 {+-} 0.02 K; however, including the new data of Matsumoto et al. (1987) the result is no longer consistent with a Planckian spectrum. The data are described by a Thomson-distortion parameter u = 0.021 {+-} 0.002 and temperature 2.823 {+-} 0.010 K at the 68% confidence level. Fitting the low-frequency data to a Bose-Einstein spectral distortion yields a 95% confidence level upper limit of 1.4 x 10{sup -2} on the chemical potential {mu}{sub 0}. These limits on spectral distortions place restrictions on a number of potentially interesting sources of energy release to the CMBR, including the hot intergalactic medium proposed as the source of the X-ray background.

Tritium permeation through characterized films on Type 304L stainless steel

Rocky Flats is looking for an optimum method for surface treating 304L stainless steel to increase its resistance to tritium permeation. Selected surface treatments were applied to 304L samples. One set of samples was shipped to the Rockwell Corporate Science Center for alternate characterization analysis. Another set was sent to Los Alamos National Laboratory for tritium exposure and ion beam spectrographic analysis. The Science Center performed the following analyses: ellipsometry, contact potential, photoelectron emission, surface energy, surface activation, cathodic polarization, electrochemical impedance, and open-circuit potential. Excellent correlation was found between type of treatment and surface activation and electrochemical impedance. Results of the Science Center tests correlated well with actual tritium permeation measurements made at Los Alamos. 8 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

Magnetic measurements on the X-17 superconducting wiggler

In this report, magnetic field measurements for the superconducting wiggler magnet to be installed in the straight section of the x-ray ring illuminating beam line X17 are described and experimental results are given. A general multiple expansion for the integrated field is derived using the theory of analytic functions. The theory is applied to the measurement of multipole coefficients. Qualitative features of the wiggler's behaviour, such as quenching characteristics and hysteresis, are also discussed. Two different kinds of measurements were made. First, a rotating long coil was used to measure properties of the integrated field, and second, the field variation along the axis of the wiggler was measured using a Hall probe. One of the main purposes of the field measurements was to determine the leading coefficients in a multipole expansion of the the transverse magnetic field, integrated along the axis of the wiggler. With these coefficients available, it is possible to study the effects of the wiggler on the dynamics of the electron beam motion, and in principle to compensate for the effects of the wiggler by using magnetic elements external to the wiggler. 11 figs., 15 tabs.
