Factors influencing the transport of actinides in the groundwater environment. Final report

This report summarizes investigations of factors that significantly influence the transport of actinide cations in the groundwater environment. Briefly, measurements of diffusion coefficients for Am(III), Cm(III), and Np(V) in moist US soils indicated that diffusion is negligible compared to mass transport in flowing groundwater. Diffusion coefficients do, however, indicate that, in the absence of flowing water, actinide elements will migrate only a few centimeters in a thousand years. The remaining investigations were devoted to the determination of distribution ratios (K/sub d/s) for representative US soils, factors influencing them, and chemical and physical processes related to transport of actinides in groundwaters. The computer code GARD was modified to include complex formation to test the importance of humic acid complexing on the rate of transport of actinides in groundwaters. Use of the formation constant and a range of humic acid, even at rather low concentrations of 10/sup -5/ to 10/sup -6/ molar, significantly increases the actinide transport rate in a flowing aquifer. These computer calculations show that any strong complexing agent will have a similar effect on actinide transport in the groundwater environment. 32 references, 9 figures.

Cryogenic analytical tools for LHe distribution system design (open access)

Cryogenic analytical tools for LHe distribution system design

The two computer programs presented in this paper are both fundamentally general in that they could be applied to other magnet systems. In addition to MFTF-B analyses, these programs will be used on current and future GDC superconducting magnet projects. Future extended capabilities will include transient heating and flow conditions for THERMOSIPHON and multiple magnet quench features for MAGPRS.

Modifications of the design of the final transformer in the FFS to accommodate lower gradients in the final quadrupole triplet (open access)

Modifications of the design of the final transformer in the FFS to accommodate lower gradients in the final quadrupole triplet

The final transformer of the FFS includes the soft bend magnet and two symmetric quadrupole triplets. It ends at the IP. It is a telescopic transformer (meaning that its transfer matrix is diagonal) with a magnification of -1/5 in both planes. In the current design, L*, the distance between the downstream end of Q1 and the IP, is equal to 7.25 feet (2.21 m) and space is provided upstream of Q6 to accommodate a 27 foot long soft bend magnet. Satisfaction of the foregoing conditions leads to field gradients of about 19.8 kg/cm in Q1 and Q3 and 18.1 kg/cm in Q2. It now appears that it would be very difficult to attain such gradients. For practical superconducting quad designs, meaning iron-free, 5 cm bore, two-layer windings and 4.2/sup 0/K, experts have estimated that gradients of at least 14 kg/cm would be reasonable. This raises the question, can the final transformer in the FFS be modified to accommodate gradients of 14 kg/cm or less and if so at what price in performance.

Effects of superposition of detector solenoid and FFS quadrupole fields in SLC and correction methods (open access)

Effects of superposition of detector solenoid and FFS quadrupole fields in SLC and correction methods

For the so-called superconducting FFS option with L* = 2.2 m, the MK2 solenoid does not overlap Q1, the FFS quad nearest the IP. For the permanent magnet option with L* = 0.75 m, the MK2 solenoid would overlap both Q1 and Q2. In either case an 8 m long solenoid, contemplated for the SLD detector, would overlap both Q1 and Q2. The solenoid field cannot be shielded so in an overlap region one will have a superposition of solenoid an quadrupole fields. Recently, the question was raised, What are the optical consequences when the solenoid and quad fields are superimposed. The question had not been considered before, but rough estimates suggested immediately that there might indeed be ugly consequences in terms of an enlargement of spot size at the IP. The purpose of this note is to answer the question quantitatively and to consider methods of correction of the ugly consequences.

Solar still. Final report (open access)

Solar still. Final report

Passive solar heating was used in a still in which a packed column packed with popped popcorn separates the alcohol and water vapors. The still's performance was not satisfactory, and it is concluded that passive solar heating could have been better used to preheat makeup water for the fermentation process and to maintain proper fermentation temperatures during the winter.
