Failure Analysis of Cracked Head Spray Piping from the Dresden Unit 2 Boiling Water Reactor

Several sections of Type 304 stainless steel head spray piping, 6.25 cm (2.5 in.) in diameter, from the Dresden Unit 2 Boiling Water Reactor were examined to determine the nature and causes of coolant leakages detected during hydrostatic tests. Extensive pitting was observed on the outside surface of the piping, and three cracks, all located at a helical stripe apparently rubbed onto the outer surface of the piping, were also noted. Metallographic examination revealed that the cracking had initiated at the outer surface of the pipe, and showed it to be transgranular and highly branched, characteristic of chloride stress corrosion cracking. The surface pitting also appeared to have been caused by chlorides. A scanning electron microprobe x-ray analysis of the corrosion product in the cracks confirmed the presence of chlorides and also indicated the presence of calcium.

Low-Sloped Roofing Research Plan

Abstract: This report presents a long-range plan for roofing research. The plan was developed in response to a need for roofing research addressing major materials problems and changes in low-sloped roofing materials technology. The intent of the plan is to establish the technical basis for developing standards and minimum levels of performance to assist in the selection of cost-effective and durable roofing materials. Four major areas of needed research are identified: (1) low-sloped roofing systems, (2) roofing membranes including single-ply and built-up, (3) thermal insulation for roofing systems, and (4) condition assessment and repair of roofs. Within each research area, a goal is given as well as a number of objectives to achieve the goal. A recommended approach to accomplish each objective is also given.

Ground-Water Monitoring in the Tucson Copper Mining District

Abstract: Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water's movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D's interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D's ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C's area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

From introduction: The Resource Assessment Investigation of the Mariana Archipelago (RAIOMA) Program is a study by the Honolulu Laboratory, conducted in close cooperation with the Governments of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and by University of Guam Marine Laboratory. The investigation will address the problem of determining the potential for development of crustacean, bottom fish, seamount groundfish, benthopelagic, and pelagic resources over the inner and outer shelves, shelf edge, reefs, and slope zones of these islands and adjacent seamounts.This document provides a comprehensive overview of the environmental and fishery information that has been published to date for the benefit of RAIOMA investigators currently involved in the field survey and resource assessment.

Ground Water in the Northeast Part of Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, Bagdad Area, California

Purpose and scope: The U.S. Marine Corps conducts training maneuvers in the study area. Lack of a local source of water has severely limited the utilization of the area. In the past, limited quantities of water have been transported to the area by truck or helicopter. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of obtaining a supply of ground water in the area for use when field maneuvers are being conducted. The major effort for this study was concentrated on the part within the Marine Corps base boundary. The study involved the assessment of ground-water quality, ground water in storage, and aquifer characteristics.
