Geothermal resource, engineering and economic feasibility study for the City of Ouray, Colorado. Final report

A geothermal energy feasibility study has been performed for the City of Ouray, Colorado, to determine the potential economic development opportunities to the City. The resource assessment indicates the resource to be associated with the Ouray fault zone, the Leadville limestone formation, the high thermal gradient in the area of the San Juan mountains, and the recharge from precipitation in the adjacent mountains. Four engineering designs of alternative sizes, costs, applications, and years of start-up have been defined to offer the City a range of development scales. Life cycle cost analyses have been conducted for cases of both public and private ownership. All systems are found to be feasible on both economic and technical grounds. 49 refs., 8 figs.

The H/sub 2/O-CHCl/sub 3/-H/sub 2/O liquid membrane system was characterized with respect to the effect on cation (K/sup +/) transport rate of salt concentration and anion type. A bulk liquid membrane cell was used. A mathematical model for cation flux is being developed for several cations, several macrocycles, and mixtures of two or three cations. Eu/sup 3 +/ was not transported by 18-crown-6, but its reduced from Eu/sup 2 +/ was. Cation transport properties of calixarenes are also being investigated. Emulsion membrane systems were studied as a way of increasing the cation transport. Pb/sup 2 +/ was found to be transported by dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 through the liquid membrane. Transport rates of metal cation nitrates were measured in a water-toluene-water emulsion membrane system. 14 figures, 7 tables. (DLC)

D7H-test results

Data were reduced from the voltage-time relations stored in files D7H001 to D7H090 on HP1000. The I-B calibration curve is included. The data base is shown and can be used by the 9845B. The data include the quench location, Q/sub 2/ layer 1 top, Q/sub 3/ layer 1 bottom and the quench current and its normalized value with respect to short sample, I/sub c/ = 4920A at 4.4 K, I/sub c/ = 6710 A at 1.8 K. The resistance (..cap omega../cm) was calculated using the propagation time according to the voltage change across the measured sections. The conductor potential length are L/sub 5/ /sub 9/ = 48.6 cm, L/sub 6/ /sub 10/ = 17.9 cm, L/sub 7/ /sub 11/ = 40.6 cm. The turn to turn velocity V/sub t/ was calculated dividing the nominal turn to turn distance (58 mil) by the propagation time (Trans. Time). The quench time T/sub q/ was measured from the time the resistive rise starts until the energy extraction system fires.

Double-mode pulsation (open access)

Double-mode pulsation

Double mode pulsation is a very pervasive phenomenon in stars all over the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In order of increasing radius, examples are: ZZ Ceti stars, the sun, the delta Scuti stars, RR Lyrae variables, the ..beta.. Cephei variables and those related to them, Cepheids, and maybe even the Mira stars. These many modes have been interpreted as both radial and nonradial modes, but in many cases the actual mode has not been clearly identified. Yellow giants seem to be the most simple pulsators with a large majority of the RR Lyrae variables and Cepheids showing only one pulsation period. We limit this review to those very few cases for classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae variables which display two modes. For these we know many facts about these stars, but the actual cause of the pulsation in two modes simultaneously remains unknown.

While some will properly note that the crystal ball is cloudy, it is equally important to note that the shape and outline of our course is discernable. Low-temperature geothermal resource and stratigraphy of portions of Yakima County, Washington

The low-temperature geothermal resource of portions of Yakima County, south-central Washington, is defined by several least squares linear regression analyses of bottom-hole temperature and depth data. Intra-borehole flow prevents the use of borehole temperature gradients for geothermal resource assessment. Bottom-hole temperature and depth data were separated into fourteen well data groups based on geographic proximity, land slope azimuth, and position within the regional ground-water flow system. The regression analyses of these well data groups indicate that the projected land-surface temperature and geothermal gradient range from 10.6 to 14.0/sup 0/C and from 24.9 to 52.2/sup 0/C/km, respectively. The depth to the 20/sup 0/C isotherm ranges from 142 to 346m. The average projected land-surface temperature and geothermal gradient are approximately 11.3/sup 0/C and 43.0/sup 0/C/km, respectively. The average depth to the 20/sup 0/C isoterm is approximately 202m. The projected land-surface temperature appears to decrease and the depth to the 20/sup 0/C isotherm appears to increase as the land-surface elevation of the well dat group increases. Stratigraphic correlation diagrams developed from borehole geophysical and lithologic logs are given for localities within the lower Yakima, Black Rock, Moxee, Ahtanum, Cowiche, and Naches valleys. Shape memory alloy seals for geothermal applications. Final report. Report ESG-82-14

A novel temperature-actuated seal for geothermal applications is under development. This program uses the shape memory property of nickel-titanium (Nitinol) alloys to achieve an improved seal in geothermal downhole pumps. Nitinol flange face seals and pump shaft seals have been designed, fabricated, and tested. It has been demonstrated that the shape memory effect of Nitinol alloys can be utilized to activate and maintain a leaktight seal in geothermal environments.

Stability of full-amplitude solutions for RR Lyrae variables

Since the discovery of numerous double-mode RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster M15 by Cox, Hodson, and Clancy (1981a and 1983, CHC), double-mode behavior in these Population II variables has made it possible to theoretically determine their masses, composition, and maybe even their evolution direction. The most unusual characteristic of these new double-mode pulsators is that they are found in a narrow range of first overtone periods (P/sub 1/=0./sup d/38-0./sup d/43) and period ratios (P/sub 1//P/sub 0/=0.746+-0.001), where P/sub 0/ is the fundamental mode period. This compares with P/sub 1/=0./sup d/41 and P/sub 1//P/sub 0/=0.746 for AQ Leonis, the only known field double-mode RR Lyrae star. Recent linear studies by CHC (1981a and 1983) suggest that double-mode behavior in this class of stars results from mode switching between the fundamental (F) and first overtone (1H) radial pulsation modes at the transition line just to the red of the F-mode blue edge.

Theoretical pulsations of the beta Cephei variable alpha Virginis

A convective overshooting at the edge of the turbulently convective core of Beta Cephei variables is suggested, which causes periodic mixing of hydrogen into the otherwise depleted core. The extra pressure at the mixing shell, due to the newly added hydrogen gives periodic pushes on the envelope and the pulsations grow. For the specific model, 2 Virginis is used, having well-known mass, radius and luminosity. The recent stopping of the pulsations of this star may indicate that the proposed overshooting growth of the convective core may be temporarily terminated. (GHT)

Theoretical calculations show strong AIC stabilization with off-normal beam injection as planned in TMX-U and MFTF-B. This paper reports results of theoretical analysis of hot electrons in thermal barriers including electron heating calculations by Monte Carlo and Fokker-Planck codes and analysis of hot electron MHD and microinstability. Initial results from the TMX-U experiment are presented which show the presence of sloshing ions.

Application of fast infrared detectors to detonation science

Infrared radiometers have been used to make time-resolved emission measurements of shocked explosives. Instruments of moderate time resolution were used to estimate temperatures in shocked but not detonated explosives. The heterogeneity of the shock-induced heating was discovered in pressed explosives by two-band techniques, and the time-resolved emittance or extent of hot spot coverage indicated a great dependence on shock pressures. Temperatures in moderately shocked organic liquids were also measured. Faster response radiometers with 5 ns rise times based on InSb and HgCdTe photovoltaic detectors were constructed and tested. Preliminary data on reactive shocks and detonations reveal a resolution of the heating in the shock wave and the following reaction.

Application of Two-time Methods in Stellar Pulsations

The method of two-time expansions is extended to include the effects of the outer, non-adiabatic layers in stellar pulsation. The evolution of pulsating stellar models can be examined, including the approach to limit cycle behavior. The method is demonstrated by a calculation of the eigenvectors for a ..beta.. Cepheid model. It is argued that the method is promising as a practical tool for treating the approach to limiting oscillations, as well as resonant and multimode behavior.

Theoretical analysis of spectral lines of one- and two-electron ions in hot plasmas

We discuss the line shapes for the 1s-2p, 1s-3p and (ls)/sup 2/ - 1s2p, (1s)/sup 2/ - 1s3p absorption lines in hot plasmas. In our model calculations the perturbing ions are considered quasi-static and widths due to collisions with electrons are calculated in the impact approximation. The collective effect of the plasma electrons is accounted for by a self-consistent model or by a simple Debye-Hueckel screening. These models in general predict different line shapes. We present calculations for the HeII, SiXIV and SiXIII ions.

Redox calcination study of Synroc D powder containing simulated SRL waste

According to Ringwood (A.E. Ringwood, W. Sinclair, and G.M. McLaughlin, Nuclear Waste Immobilization, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Livermore, Rept. UCRL-15147 (1979)), the iron oxidation state is important in controlling, the spinel mineralogy and composition if the amount of titania (TiO/sub 2/) consumed in spinel formation is to be minimized in favor of the formation of the Synroc phases, zirconolite, perovskite, and nepheline. In our redox calcination studies we observed that the iron oxidation state of FeO/Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ can be controlled by the redoxcalcining atmosphere. In a CO atmosphere, the oxidation state was reduced to less than 7 wt % Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/. With appropriate CO/sub 2//CO gas mixtures the resultant iron oxidation states were in the range of 45 to 59 wt % Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Direct rotary redox calcination of spray dried powder at 600/sup 0/C, without prior air calcination, showed increased redox efficiency when compared to powder that had been previously air calcined at 650/sup 0/C. We believe this is caused by a reduction in particle size. Rotary calcination at 800/sup 0/C in argon has no measurable reduction affect on the iron oxidation state of Synroc D powder.
