Electron clearing for the ISA proton beam (open access)

Electron clearing for the ISA proton beam

The circulating protons in the ISABELLE intersecting storage ring accelerator will collide with the residual gas in the vacuum chamber. The electrons produced will tend to be captured by the potential well of the beam itself and result in a neutralization of the space charge of the beam. A detailed analysis is given of the various mechanisms which can be used to reduce the net degree of beam neutralization. It is concluded that the average neutralization will be about 10/sup -4/ for a residual gas pressure of 3 x 10/sup -11/ torr of hydrogen.

Reservoir engineering report for the magma-SDG and E geothermal experimental site near the Salton Sea, California (open access)

Reservoir engineering report for the magma-SDG and E geothermal experimental site near the Salton Sea, California

A description of the Salton Sea geothermal reservoir is given and includes approximate fault locations, geology (lithology), temperatures, and estimates of the extent of the reservoir. The reservoir's temperatures and chemical composition are also reviewed. The flow characteristics are discussed after analyses of drillstem tests and extended well tests. The field production, reserves and depletion are estimated, and the effects of fractures on flow and depletion are discussed. The reservoir is believed to be separated into an ''upper'' and ''lower'' portion by a relatively thick and continuous shale layer. The upper reservoir is highly porous, with high permeability and productivity. The lower reservoir is at least twice as large as the upper but has much lower storativity and permeability in the rock matrix. The lower reservoir may be highly fractured, and its temperatures and dissolved solids are greater than those of the upper reservoir. The proven reserves of heat in the upper reservoir are about /sup 1///sub 4/ GW.yr (in the fluid) and /sup 1///sub 3/ GW.yr (in the rock). In the lower reservoir the proven reserves of heat are 5/sup 3///sub 4/ GW.yr (in the fluid) and 17 GW.yr (in the rock). Unproven reserves greatly exceed these numbers. Injection …

Advanced-fueled fusion reactors suitable for direct energy conversion. Project note: temperature-gradient enhancement of electrical fields in insulators (open access)

Advanced-fueled fusion reactors suitable for direct energy conversion. Project note: temperature-gradient enhancement of electrical fields in insulators

Direct energy converters for use on controlled fusion reactors utilize electrodes operated at elevated voltages and temperatures. The insulating elements that position these electrodes must support large voltages and under some circumstances large thermal gradients. It is shown that even modest thermal gradients can cause major alterations of the electric-field distribution within the insulating element.

Correlation experiments and the nonvalidity of ordinary ideas about the physical world (open access)

Correlation experiments and the nonvalidity of ordinary ideas about the physical world

It is shown that the predictions of quantum theory in certain correlations experiments are incompatible with ordinary ideas about the physical world. In particular the following theorem is proved: Consider situations involving two experimenters, one working in each of two space-like separated regions. Suppose each is apparently free to choose to perform in his region one of two alternative experiments. Assume that the results that would be obtained in each of the alternative cases conform to the statistical predictions of quantum theory. Then the experimental results in one region must, in some cases, depend on which experiment is performed in the space-like separated region. This theorem is akin to a theorem of J. S. Bell. However, Bell's theorem refers to hidden-variables, which may not exist in nature, whereas the present theorem deals directly with connections between the (macroscopic) results of possible measurements and physical variables subject to the control of experimenters.

Selected topics from continuum mechanics (open access)

Selected topics from continuum mechanics

An attempt is made to provide a simple, nonrigorous introduction to some of the basic concepts and vocabulary of continuum mechanics. Some fundamental equations and ''physical facts'' are presented without significant derivation. The treatment is not comprehensive, but a number of references are given which can serve as starting points for study in greater depth. The subjects treated are elastic solids, material failure, gases and shock waves, liquids, instabilities, and detonation propagation. The equation of state is emphasized in the presentation. 9 figures. (RWR)

Calibration of thin film EMP sensors by AFWL Coaxial Chamber (open access)

Calibration of thin film EMP sensors by AFWL Coaxial Chamber

Preliminary EMP calibration data on magnetic thin film current sensors has been obtained. The Air Force Weapon Lab's Coaxial Chamber was used as the EMP standard and a current pulse width of 40 ns was used. It was found that the sensitivity of the sensors can be increased by controlling the width of the 90/sup 0/ wall strip and that the current scales for the sensors were linear. The results strongly suggest that the dimensions of the sensors can be varied to meet different measurement requirements.

Input and decayed values of radioactive liquid wastes discharged to the ground in the 200 Areas through 1975 (open access)

Input and decayed values of radioactive liquid wastes discharged to the ground in the 200 Areas through 1975

Low and intermediate level liquid wastes from chemical separations processing of spent reactor fuel elements have been discharged to the ground in the 200-Areas since 1944. Large volumes of process cooling water, normally free of radioactive contaminants, are discharged to surface ditches or natural surface depressions (ponds). Lesser volumes of liquid waste such as steam condensates, process condensates, scavenged process waste supernatants, and plutonium processing wastes have been, or are being discharged to subsurface disposal sites (cribs). Only input volumes and radioactivity discharged to each disposal site have been reported periodically.

Evaluation of the Amperex 56 TVP photomultiplier (open access)

Evaluation of the Amperex 56 TVP photomultiplier

Characteristics have been measured for the Amperex 56 TVP 42-mm-diameter photomultiplier. Some typical photomultiplier characteristics--such as gain, dark current, transit and rise times--are compared with data provided by the manufacturer. Photomultiplier characteristics generally not available from the manufacturer, such as the single photoelectron time spread, the relative collection efficiency, the relative anode pulse amplitude as a function of the voltage between the photocathode and focusing electrode, and the position of the photocathode sensing area were measured and are discussed for two 56 TVP's. The single photoelectron time spread, the relative collection efficiency, and the transit time difference as a function of the voltage between photocathode and focusing electrode were also measured and are discussed, particularly with respect to the optimization of photomultiplier operating conditions for timing applications.

Conceptual design of the blanket and power conversion system for a mirror hybrid fusion-fission reactor. 12-month progress report, July 1, 1975--June 30, 1976 (open access)

Conceptual design of the blanket and power conversion system for a mirror hybrid fusion-fission reactor. 12-month progress report, July 1, 1975--June 30, 1976

This report presents the conceptual design and preliminary feasibility assessment for the hybrid blanket and power conversion system of the Mirror Hybrid Fusion-Fission Reactor. Existing gas-cooled fission reactor technology is directly applicable to the Mirror Hybrid Reactor. There are a number of aspects of the present conceptual design that require further design and analysis effort. The blanket and power conversion system operating parameters have not been optimized. The method of supporting the blanket modules and the interface between these modules and the primary loop helium ducting will require further design work. The means of support and containment of the primary loop components must be studied. Nevertheless, in general, the conceptual design appears quite feasible.

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon. Third quarterly progress report, April 1, 1976--June 30, 1976 (open access)

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon. Third quarterly progress report, April 1, 1976--June 30, 1976

Based on the decision to concentrate on the fluidized-bed reduction of silicon tetrachloride as a candidate process for production of low-cost solar-grade silicon, work during the current quarter was directed toward: (1) evaluation of the economic effects of operating at Zn/SiCl/sub 4/ feed ratios other than the stoichiometric 2/1; (2) design, construction, and exploratory operation of the ''miniplant'' designed to ultimately yield over 200 g hr/sup -1/ silicon for runs of 4 to 6 hr duration. It was concluded that no significant economic advantages exist in operating at Zn/SiCl/sub 4/ ratios on either side of the stoichiometric 2/1. Further, if advantages in reaction kinetics, or in product form or quality can be obtained by off-stoichiometry operation, these advantages might be obtained at only a modest increase in product cost. During the current quarter, design criteria for the miniplant were established, equipment was designed and constructed, and a number of shakedown runs were made which led to equipment modifications for improved operability.

Terminal storage of radioactive waste in geologic formations (open access)

Terminal storage of radioactive waste in geologic formations

The principal aim of the National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) program is to develop pilot plants and, ultimately, repositories in several different rock formations in various parts of the country. Rocks such as salt, shale, limestone, granite, schists, and serpentinite may all qualify as host media for the disposition of radioactive wastes in the proper environments. In general, the only requirement for any rock formation or storage site is that it contain any emplaced wastes for so long as it takes for the radioactive materials to decay to innocuous levels. This requirement, though, is a formidable one as some of the wastes will remain active for periods of hundreds of thousands of years and the physical and chemical properties of rocks that govern circulating groundwater and hence containment, are difficult to determine and define. Nevertheless, there are many rock types and a host of areas throughout the country where conditions are promising for the development of waste repositories. Some of these are discussed below.
