Radiation effects and metalloproteins studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (open access)

Radiation effects and metalloproteins studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to study the bonding structure at the iron site of cytochrome c and the bonding of rare earth ions to the phosphate oxygens of ATP. Radiation effects are studied on several amino acid and simple peptide model systems. The emission spectrum of the x-ray source is calculated from literature references. The distributions of photon energy as a function of photon frequency and as a function of take-off angle are obtained. From these distributions, the radiation dose absorbed by an organic sample is found to be 10/sup 6/ rads/sec. The C 1s and N 1s spectra of amino acids and peptides are studied to characterize an internal reference standard for protein XPS spectra. Samples of native cytochrome c prepared from solutions of pH 1.5, 3, 7, and 11 are studied. Control samples include porphyrin cytochrome c (PCC), the metal free analogue of the native protein, and microperoxidase (MP), a mixture of heme peptides derived from the peptic digestion of cytochrome c. These samples show two S 2p peaks. The first peak has a binding energy (BE) of 163 eV, which corresponds to the S containing amino acids; the second peak is shifted to 167 eV. …

Study on reduction of accessory horsepower requirements. Fourth quarterly progress report

The program objective is to evolve and define an accessory drive system that will minimize system power consumption of driven accessories on an internal combustion engine in a passenger automobile. The initial three program phases established concept feasibility, determined potential fuel savings, and selected a drive system design for concept mechanization. During this quarter the major program accomplishments were: selection of candidate belt-drive concepts; completion of Phase III baseline vehicle drive systems physical and operational envelopes; completion of analysis for a mechanically controlled direct-operated belt drive with input programming; and completion of design layout and analysis for a hydromechanically controlled, servo-operated belt drive with output-speed sensing. Development program on pressurized fluidized-bed combustion. Annual report, July 1, 1974--June 30, 1975 (open access)

Development program on pressurized fluidized-bed combustion. Annual report, July 1, 1974--June 30, 1975

The feasibility of using fluidized-bed combustors in power and steam plants is being evaluated. The concept involves burning fuels such as coal in a fluidized bed of either a naturally occurring, calcium-containing limestone or dolomite or in a synthetically prepared calcium-containing stone. The calcium oxide in the stone reacts with the sulfur released during combustion to form calcium sulfate, which remains in the bed, thus decreasing the level of SO/sub 2/ in the flue gas. Levels of NO/sub x/ in the flue gas are also low. The effect of operating variables and type of stone on the levels of SO/sub 2/ and NO/sub x/ is being determined. Behavior of trace elements during combustion has been preliminarily evaluated. The properties of a fluidized bed at minimum fluidization at different temperatures and pressures have been determined. The CaSO/sub 4/ produced in the combustion process is regenerated to CaO for reuse in the combustor by reductive decomposition at 1095/sup 0/C (2000/sup 0/F). The effects of operating variables on sulfur release during regeneration are being evaluated. Another regeneration process, solid-solid reaction of CaSO/sub 4/ with CaS, is also being investigated. Fundamental investigations of the kinetics of sulfation and regeneration reactions for the natural and …

Goals study for technical development and economic evaluation of the compound parabolic concentrator concept for solar energy collector applications (open access)

Goals study for technical development and economic evaluation of the compound parabolic concentrator concept for solar energy collector applications

The Argonne National Laboratories, contracted with Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL), to perform a 6 week goal study for the purpose of evaluating the technical applicability and the economic viability of the compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) concept for all solar energy applications except large central power plants. During this period, we studied the use of CPC units in a large number of residential, industrial, and commercial applications. The predicted performance of CPC augmented solar collectors was compared with other available solar collectors. Application of the CPC to on-site power generation using solar Rankine power generation techniques was studied in detail. Techniques and costs for fabricating CPC collectors were studied. Collectors with insulation and with full-surface reflectors were studied along with the use of CPC augmentation for evacuated receivers with selective surfaces. Manufacturing costs are compared with those reported by others. A qualitative comparison was made between the various classes of solar collectors that are either presently available or are expected to become available in the near future. Comparative energy costs for various collectors are discussed based upon the predicted performance and the estimated costs for manufacture. The problems of introducing the CPC, or other advanced technology type of solar collectors, …

Summary report of soil removal preliminary excavations. (Report No. ES-389-75-171)

A proposed technique to remove small areas, <2,000 m/sup 2/, of contaminated soil is discussed along with the results of an actual excavation. Based on the results of a trial excavation in uncontaminated soil and an excavation of two trenches in contaminated soil, it is concluded that the techniques described are a satisfactory means of contaminated soil removal. It can be done safely with a release of airborne plutonium a factor of 10 or more below the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) limit.

Thermal hydraulic evaluation of advanced wire-wrapped assemblies (open access)

Thermal hydraulic evaluation of advanced wire-wrapped assemblies

The thermal-hydraulic analyses presented in this report are based on application of the subchannel concept in association with the use of bulk parameters for coolant velocity and coolant temperature within a subchannel. The interactions between subchannels are due to turbulent interchange, pressure-induced diversion crossflow, directed sweeping crossflow induced by the helical wire wrap, and transverse thermal conduction. The FULMIX-II computer program was successfully developed to perform the steady-state temperature predictions for LMFBR fuel assemblies with the reference straight-start design and the advanced wire-wrap designs. Predicted steady-state temperature profiles are presented for a typical CRBRP 217-rod wire-wrapped assembly with the selected wire-wrap designs.

Decommissioning of Division of Military Application equipment at Richland Operations Office for period ending June 30, 1975

Decommissioning of the DMA facilities is estimated at 65% complete compared to 60% forecast at the start of the program in April 1974. The transfer of 12 transuranic boxes to 20-year retrievable storage this quarter brings the total to date to 26, and includes all of the inspection area glove boxes and conveyor sections, four A-Line and two C-Line glove boxes, along with all auxiliary hydraulic equipment pumps, and piping serving the three areas. Removal of additional A-Line and C-Line conveyor sections, one glove box, and relocation of two other glove boxes has been authorized by the Energy Research and Development Administration. Albuquerque Operations Office, and the A-Line portion of work currently is estimated at 40% complete. The removal of the one high plutonium-containing glove box, HC-40D and B has been delayed for additional sodium iodide (NaI) gamma counting following Z-Plant Operations cleanout and recovery of over 1,900 grams of plutonium. The fiscal year 1975 cost was $1,080,000 as estimated, and includes $11,585 in accrued costs for Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) plywood boxes delivered but not billed at month-end. Thirty-eight of the 51 FRP boxes on order have been delivered to date, and the cost of $98,767 is included in …

Breeder reactor economics (open access)

Breeder reactor economics

This paper focuses on the comparative economics of fast breeder reactors versus light water reactors and develops an internally consistent set of financial techniques whereby a utility may determine and compare the costs of generating power with either system. The general methodology is used here to estimate the break-even capital costs for the breeder as a function of future uranium prices but is equally applicable to other reactor types. It is shown that by the time the breeder reactor (breeder) is commercially available, it is likely a utility would select a breeder even though its capital cost might be twice that of a light water reactor (LWR).
