Diverse methods proposed for the acceleration of particles by means of collective fields are reviewed. A survey is made of the various currently active experimental programs devoted to investigating collective acceleration, and the present status of the research is briefly noted.

Tubular thermoelectric module technology was advanced during Phase II-C of the Compact Converter Program to the extent that the baseline temperature for module testing was raised from 1000°F 1100°F. Significant development work was performed to produce a system utilizing a heat pipe that transmitted thermal energy from an external heat source to a tubular module.

The major objective of the current program is the preparation of high energy hydroxyl-terminated polyester prepolymers from combinations of energetic diols and dicarboxylic acid chlorides. The initial work was based on the reactions of 4,4-dinitropimeloyl chloride (DNPCl) with 2,2,8,8-tetranitro-4,6-dioxa-1,9-nonanediol (DINOL) and 3(dinitrofluoro- ethoxy)-1,2-propanediol (REX-18). In an effort to develop a smooth and rapid polyester polymerization method, reactions between DNPCl and both DINOL and REX-18 have been carried out in THF containing pyridine. It was expected that the pyridine would act as an HCl acceptor, permitting room temperature polymerizations. This was indeed shown to be the case. In fact, when the glycol and DNPCl were dissolved in THF and pyridine added rapidly, a very exothermic reaction took place, with copious quantities of pyridine hydrochloride being precipitated. Slow addition of pyridine to the reaction mixture also resulted in an exotherm. In both cases, brown polymers were produced and they were very difficult to work-up. The next series of polymerizations will be carried out at 0{degrees}C in an effort to control the polymerizations more carefully and avoid color formation. This report presents details of the activities of Douglas United Nuclear at the Hanford site during the month of June 1969.

The purpose of this study can be divided into the three following parts: 1) to present complete sets of data obtained for projectile penetration into soil targets of precisely known properties, and to describe how to build and test these targets; 2) to present a numerical method of data analysis for empirically determining the force on a projectile, during penetration; and 3) to demonstrate how physical soil parameters, as well as impact velocity and a projectile property influence penetration.

General expressions are given for the field and its expansion coefficients produced by a two dimensional conductor structure surrounded by iron with a circular inside boundary. Saturation effects are described in terms of the tangential field at that boundary. The effects of the following types of perturbations are discussed: displacement, rotation and error excitation of a conductor, change of conductor shape, and modification of the inside contour of the iron. A design criterion is given to minimize the error fields associated with a displacement of the iron shell relative to the conductor structure. Expressions for the force and torque acting on a conductor are derived both for the unperturbed and perturbed magnet. Formulae are presented that allow convenient and fast evaluation of pertinent quantities with a computer when the structure is too complicated for hand computations.

This study investigates the scaling of dimensions of craters formed by nuclear explosive sources as well as the problem of making consistent estimates of other geonuclear effects including maximum base surge radius, vented fraction of the gamma emitting radionuclides appearing in close-in fallout, and main cloud dimensions. Input to the proposed scaling method includes the Froude number as determined by the depth of burial and the mound surface velocity at vent time, and the pressure in the cavity at vent time. These inputs are provided from long-running cratering-mechanincs numerical calculations. Illustrations are given of the use of the method for 1 Mt and 200 kt cratering events. 10 refs., 10 figs., 7 tabs.

BNW was requested by AEC/DRDT to assist ANL with the postirradiation examination of EBR-II driver fuel (U + 5Fs) pins that became shortened during irradiation. To date, three irradiated pins and one nonirradiated pin were examined.
