In the various design concepts of using pyrofoil as seals, thermal and flow barriers, and antifriction joints in the reactor core, dimensional tolerances can become critical in some areas. In such cases the compaction properties of he pyrofoil are essential for adequate design and for setting up procedures in the fabrication and handling of parts. Preliminary tests indicated that initial compaction was seriously affected by prior handling. In the case of the aft end seals the compaction and hysteresis properties at low loads must be considered in order to maintain sealing between elements under known bundling pressure conditions.
