Failure of the Chapman-Jouguet Theory for Liquid and Solid Explosives (open access)

Failure of the Chapman-Jouguet Theory for Liquid and Solid Explosives

The usual treatment of unsupported detonation, often called the Chapman-Jouguet theory, is based on four assumptions: (1) the detonation approaches a steady state, (2) the flow is laminar and one dimensional, (3) the detonation products approach a state of chemical equilibrium some distance behind the detonation front, and (4) the detonation velocity is the minimum permitted by the conservation conditions. In a recent paper Wood and Fickett (Phys. Fluids 6, 648(1963)) proposed experiments to test the validity of the Chapman-Jouguet "theory", not requiring knowledge or assumptions about the nature of the equation of state of the detonation products, by making variations of the initial state or the explosive. In this paper we report the results of experiments in which (1) the initial state was varied by using mixtures of nitromethane and another liquid made or equal molar parts of nitric acid, acetonitrile, and water, which has the same atomic composition as nitromethane, and (2) the initial state was varied by using TNT as liquid and as solid. These results show that the Chapman-Jouguet theory is violated. The calculated pressures are 15% to 20% below the measured pressures. Results of measurements using other explosives are also presented to support the conclusion …

Thermocouple Development for Project Rover (open access)

Thermocouple Development for Project Rover

Thermocouples are used for the control and diagnostic measurement of the thermal behavior of cores in the Kiwi and Nerva reactors of Project Rover. The predominant hostile environmental conditions are those of hot hydrogen, hot graphite, and intense nuclear radiation. W/W Re thermocouples, insulated by BeO and encased in Mo or Ta sheaths, seem to show the most promise. Some aspects of thermocouple development, principally shunt effects and sheath integrity, are discussed.

Decontamination Studies: Battelle-Northwest Laboratories, December 1964-- August 1965

From ninth meeting of the USAEC reactor decontamination information exchange group; Washington, District of Columbia, USA (1 Sep 1965). The decontamination activity described includes: laboratory studies to evaluate reagents, and actual decontamination of 2 steam generators at New Production Reactor. ln laboratory tests, a proprietery oxalic acid solution appeared to be more effective th:dn sny other tried. No excessive corrosion was noted. Special reegents to dissolve high fired ceramic core materials (UO/sub 2/ and PuO/sub 2/) are being developed and evaluated. Phosphorous acid, sulfuric acid and a mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids were effective. Corrosion of 304 stainless steel was low. Two N Reactor steam generators were decontaminated to facilitate inspection and repair. The APSUL procedure was tried, but control of concentrations was inadequate and decontamination factors were low, ranging from 1.6 to 9.0. No excessive corrosion was noted. (auth)

Process Bases and Specifications Thorium---U-233 Separations at the Purex Plant (open access)

Process Bases and Specifications Thorium---U-233 Separations at the Purex Plant

The Purex Plant was originally designed for the chemical processing of irradiated natural uranium. It has been used nearly exclusively for this purpose during its approximately ten-year operating lifetime. However, during the winter of 1964--1965, a special processing campaign was planned and accomplished in which approximately 6 tons of irradiated thoria targets were introduced to the plant, and the thorium-232 and uranium-233 were successfully separated and purified on a demonstration basis. For the demonstration thorium processing operation (6-ton test) of the winter of 1964--1965, process specifications were issued. These specifications were necessarily specific to the particular campaign inasmuch as a rather unusual processing scheme was required, by virtue of the small tonnage involved and the equipment limitations of the plant. Thus, for the relatively large operation subsequently planned, other process specifications are required. The purpose of this present document is to provide these specifications. Depending on the manner and extent of thorium -- uranium-233 production developments, these present specifications may have future application, at least in part. In addition to the process specifications, this document includes a section describing the flowsheet, and a section in which the technological bases for good process control are presented. In conjunction with the specifications, …
