Multipurpose scintillation camera (open access)

Multipurpose scintillation camera

The scintillation camera is a nonscanning instrument for displaying the distribution of radioactive isotopes. It can be used, for example, to show abnormalities in the thyroid gland with I-131, the size, shape and location of kidneys with Hg-203 Neohydrin or to locate brain tumors either with Hg-203 Neohydrin or with the new positron emitting agent, Ga-68 EDTA. For many applications, the scintillation camera has higher sensitivity than conventional isotope scanners, and will produce pictures in less time or with a smaller quantity of isotope present. Alternatively, it produces better pictures if the conventional dosage and exposure factors are retained. Because of the short exposure time, and because the scintillation camera is continuously sensitive to all areas within its field of view, it is well adapted to taking rapid sequences of still pictures or time-lapse motion pictures of subjects in which the distribution of radioactivity is changing. For example, time lapse pictures have been taken showing I-131 Rose Bengal Bengal being excreted from the liver of children with liver disease and of I-131 hippuran going through the kidneys of patients suspected of kidney disease.

Increasing the capacity of the Tory II-C Side Support System (open access)

Increasing the capacity of the Tory II-C Side Support System

The Tory II-C lateral suspension has been designed for 4 g`s of lateral acceleration of the duct. Calculations and model tests indicate that this requirement has been met or exceeded. In order to have a more realistic model to test, Tory II-C springs are going to be fitted around the full scale core slice which was previously built up. Instrumented accelerations of this assembly should give the most direct demonstration that is possible of the response of the system to flight. This memorandum discusses, knowing the capabilities of the present system, the design changes necessary to suit different maximum accelerations by increasing the capacity of the Tory II-C side support system.

Development and Evaluation of Soil Bearing Capacity Foundations of Structures, Report 1: Field Vibratory Tests Data

This report is the first in a series and provides the methods and data obtained from field tests to compare soil types to evaluate highly-compacted soils in foundations that are subjected to dynamic loads. "The specific purpose was to determine the effect of load contact area and static contact pressure on the elastic properties of foundations as determined by means of a small-scale vibratory tests" (p. vii).

Regional Hydrology of a Part of Southern Nevada: a Reconnaissance

From introduction: This report summarizes the available hydrologic information for a part of Nevada surrounding the Nevada Test Site. It emphasizes the possibility that ground water may move from one basin to another, whereas the usual concept heretofore has been that the ground water of the region generally occurs in basins that are closed or nearly closed.

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR JULY 1963 (open access)

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR JULY 1963

8 7 6 2 ; 7 4 7 6 : 7 8 : : ; half life of 3.781 plus or minus 0.010 years based on calorimetric measuiements. The calorimetric assay of the sample will be continued ior several years to decrease the probable error. The decay scheme for /sup 209/Po--/sup 209/Po/ isitopic mixtures is being determined. The gamma spectrum is being studied using two sources of different isotopic composition. Definite peaks were established at 76, 260, 300, 575, and 9l0 kev. Various multiple coincidence experiments indicated that the 300- and 575-kev photons and the 76-kev x-ray are in triple coincidence. Relative intensities of the various gamma rays from the two different sources indicated that the 575-kev photon is associated with /sup 208/ Po decay, while the 260- and 910-kev states are attributed to /sup 209/Po. A theoretical estimate of the partial alpha half life for /sup 208/Po decay to the 2+ level in /sup 204/Pb (at 0.899 Mev) was made. This value (2.5 x 10/sup 6/ years) was determined graphically by extrapolation to an alpha particle energy of 4.2l1 Mev. /sup 209/Po--/sup 2o9/Po sources are being prepared for the investigation of the internal conversion electron spectra of these isotopes. …
