Calculated Effect of Some Airplane Handling Techniques on the Ground-Run Distance in Landing on Slippery Runways (open access)

Calculated Effect of Some Airplane Handling Techniques on the Ground-Run Distance in Landing on Slippery Runways

Note presenting some calculations made on the basis of simplifying assumptions to determine the effect on the ground-run distance of maintaining a nose-high attitude instead of a three-point attitude in landings of several types of jet airplanes on slippery runways. The airplanes considered were a swept-wing transport and unswept-, swept-, and delta-wing fighters. Results regarding the effect of airplane attitude and effect of flap retraction are provided.

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report for January, February, and March 1957 (open access)

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report for January, February, and March 1957

A fused fluoride process for dissolution of zirconium-uranium fuel alloys is being developed. The alloy is dissolved in an equimolar sodium fluoride-zirconium fluoride melt at 600°C by sparging the system with hydrogen fluoride. The uranium is volatilized from the melt as the hexafluoride by a sparging operation with fluorine or bromine pentafluoride vapor. This product is then decontaminated and purified by fractional distillation.

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks (open access)

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks

Abstract: "A procedure for the determination of thorium in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10 parts per million ThO2 in felsic or mafic rocks. Thorium is extracted by mesityl oxide and purified by iodate precipitation from nitric acid medium containing tartaric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The thorium is determined spectrophotometrically with thoron from meso-tartaric acid medium."

THE ECONOMICS AND HAZARD POTENTIAL OF WASTE DISPOSAL (open access)

THE ECONOMICS AND HAZARD POTENTIAL OF WASTE DISPOSAL

The two most important considerations in the disposal of radioactive wastes are safety and economy. All other steps in the waste disposal complex must be tuned to accomplish these two goals. In general, the hazardous waste in the nuclear power complex affect the cost of the nuclear power reactor fuel cycle, the general environment since disposal must exclude radioactivity from the environment for over 500 years, the costs and/or methods of waste treatment including fission product utilization, the methods of shipping, the location of chemical processing plants and waste disposal sites, the methods of disposal best suited for a particular type of waste or site location, and potential public damage and third-party liability.

The Effect of D20 on Survival of Mice with Ascites Tumor

The effect of deuterium oxide (D{sub 2}O) on the survival of mice inoculated with Ehrlich's mouse ascites tumor has been studied. Mice maintained on 25% and 30% D{sub 2}O drinking water showed an improved survival time of about 6 days whereas 40% D{sub 2}O drinking water had no effect on survival time. The effect is interpreted in terms of inhibition of tumor cell division and systemic toxicity.

Effects of airplane flexibility on wing bending strains in rough air (open access)

Effects of airplane flexibility on wing bending strains in rough air

"Some results on the effects of wing flexibility on wing bending strains as determined from flight tests of a Boeing B-29 and a Boeing B-47A airplane in rough air are presented. Results from an analytical study of the flexibility effects on the B-29 wing strains are compared with the experimental results. Both the experimental and calculated results are presented as frequency-response functions of the bending strains at various spanwise wing stations to gust disturbances. In addition, some indirect evidence of the effect of spanwise variations in turbulence on the response of the B-47A airplane is presented" (p. 1).

Experimental Investigation of Attenuation of Strong Shock Waves in a Shock Tube With Hydrogen and Helium as Driver Gases

Note presenting an experimental investigation of the attenuation of strong shock waves in air in a shock tube. Time-history measurements were made of the static pressure at several stations in the wall of the tube. Hydrogen and helium were used as driver gases.
