Investigation of Effects of Grain Size Upon Engine Life of Cast AMS 5385 Gas Turbine Blades

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of pouring temperature and grain size on the uniformity of lives and initial failure times of groups of AMS 5385 gas turbine blades and to relate the individual lives of the blades to grain size. This is due to the fact that the uniformity of lift of cast alloy gas-turbine blades is generally unsatisfactory. Results regarding the metallurgical examination are provided.

An Ionization Chamber Method for the Standardization of Tritiated Water Samples (open access)

An Ionization Chamber Method for the Standardization of Tritiated Water Samples

Ionization measurements of water vapor in vapor-liquid equilibrium were made with a series of chambers on a tritiated water sample which was prepared by burning T2 to T2O and diluting it with H2O. A correction was made for the difference of vapor pressures of HTO and H2O. The effect of HTO adsorbed on chamber walls and electrodes was eliminated from the final result. Using Gerbes data on the number of electron volts to produce an ion pair in air, agreement obtained between the measured source strength and the source strength as computed from pressure, temperature, volume, purity, and dilution data on the original gaseous T2 sample.

Lift and center of pressure of wing-body-tail combinations at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds (open access)

Lift and center of pressure of wing-body-tail combinations at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds

From Summary: "A method is presented for calculating the lift and centers of pressure of wing-body and wing-body-tail combinations at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds. A set of design charts and a computing table are presented which reduce the computations to routine operations. Comparison between the estimated and experimental characteristics for a number of wing-body and wing-body-tail combinations shows correlation to within + or - 10 percent on lift and to within about + or - 0.02 of the body length on center of pressure."

Measurements of Water Lattices

A series of measurements of ε in slightly enriched uranium, light water lattices is presently under way at Brookhaven. Figure 1 shows ε as a function of water-to-metal ratio for .600" diameter rods, of 1.3% enrichment. Because of interaction between neighboring groups of rods, ε increases rapidly as the water-to-metal ratio decreases.

Nuclear Energy for Rocket Propulsion (open access)

Nuclear Energy for Rocket Propulsion

The results of a rocket vehicle study indicate that nuclearpowered rocket vehicles will be lighter than comparable chemically powered vehicles for vehicle velocities greater than 15,000 ft/sec with payload weights of 1000 to 10,000 lb, or for vehicle velocities greater than 7000 ft/sec with payload weights greater than 10,000 lb. The reactor core design study shows that high reactor core bulk power densities might be achieved without an undue gas pressure drop across the reactor or an excessive temperature drop from the fuel element to the gas. The best core design appears to be one that utilizes thin, parallel, solid graphite plates as the heattransfer elements. Since the propellant gases are predominantly hydrogen, the use of graphite as the basic structural material will require the development of a hydrogenresistant coating to be applied to the surfaces of the graphite heat-transfer elements of the reactor core in order to inhibit chemical reactions between the gas and the graphite. The feasibility of the reactor core designs considered thus depends on the efficacy of the protective coatings proposed for the graphite heat-transfer elements. Thus the first step in a program of development of a nuclear rocket should be an experimental investigation of protective …

Overconcentration in initial operation of uranium evaporator, 321 Building (open access)

Overconcentration in initial operation of uranium evaporator, 321 Building

In the initial uranium solution testing of the Purex prototype facility uranium evaporator, failure of the concentrator feed pump, along with other contributing circumstances discussed later, resulted in an overconcentration of the uranyl nitrate solution to the point of incipient denitration. The overconcentration was accompanied by the evolution of brown nitrogen dioxide fumes from the concentrator. Examination of the evaporator contents after the incident has led to the conclusion that a rapid rection of nitric acid with organic material may also have occurred. The pressure buildup surmised to have accompanied the nitric acid-organic reaction apparently jarred the ceramic Raschig-ring packing in the stripping tower surmounting the concentrator tubes sufficiently to chip many of them badly. Ceramic dust and chips from the Raschig rings were found mixed with the uranium-bearing concentrator residue in almost the entire concentrator pot and filling more than half of the tubes.

Polarographic Behavior of Various Metal Ions in Plutonium Solutions (open access)

Polarographic Behavior of Various Metal Ions in Plutonium Solutions

The reported procedures for the polarographic determination of uranium, vanadium, and titanium in plutonium were investigated to ascertain if they could be used to determine other common metals in plutonium. It was found that the procedure using hydroxylamine hydrochloride to reduce plutonium to the (III) oxidation state could be used to determine bismuth, platinum, rhodium, copper, tin, lead, thallium, iridium, and cadmium. The procedure using zinc and zinc amalgam in hydrochloric acid to reduce the plutonium to the (III) oxidation state is quite limited, but it might be used to determine molybdenum.
