Survey of some preliminary investigations of supersonic diffusers at high Mach numbers

From Introduction: "Design studies of long-range supersonic missiles indicate the Mach number range of 3 to 4 to be of considerable promise. Accordingly, the NACA is conducting research on the performance of a wide variety of supersonic diffusers in this range. The initial phase of this research is concerned primarily with the characteristics of conventional axially symmetric diffusers operating at design values of flight Mach number."

Reflection of shock waves from slotted walls at Mach number 1.62

"A brief study was made of the effects of slots in a test-section wall on the reflection from the wall of an incident oblique shock wave at a free-stream Mach number of 1.62. The reflection was observed with an interferometer for various combinations of slot width, spacing, and contour. The reflections from the open and the closed portions of the wall, being at different angles to the wall, were not superimposed and, therefore, did not cancel each other" (p. 1).

Investigation of Turbines for Driving Supersonic Compressors 2: Performance of First Configuration With 2.2 Percent Reduction in Nozzle Flow Area (open access)

Investigation of Turbines for Driving Supersonic Compressors 2: Performance of First Configuration With 2.2 Percent Reduction in Nozzle Flow Area

"The experimental performance of a modified turbine for driving a supersonic compressor is presented and compared with the performance of the original configuration to illustrate the effect of small changes in the ratio of nozzle-throat area to rotor-throat area. Performance is based on the performance of turbines designed to operate with both blade rows close to choking. On the basis of the results of this investigation, the ratio of areas is concluded to become especially critical in the design of turbines such as those designed to drive high-speed, high-specific weight-flow compressors where the turbine nozzles and rotor are both very close to choking" (p. 1).

Performance Characteristics of a Normal-Shock Side Inlet Located Downstream of a Canard Control Surface at Mach Numbers of 1.5 and 1.8 (open access)

Performance Characteristics of a Normal-Shock Side Inlet Located Downstream of a Canard Control Surface at Mach Numbers of 1.5 and 1.8

The performance characteristics of a downward canted normal-shock side (scoop) inlet located downstream of a triangular control surface are presented for free-stream Mach numbers of 1.5 and 1.8 in terms of total pressure recovery and mass flow ratio for various boundary-layer removal systems, angles of attack, control surface deflections and adverse yaw. An engine operating condition for a hypothetical turbojet engine is established, and the match point characteristics of the engine-inlet configuration are summarized. It is shown that the diffuser performance increases with increased boundary-layer removal and decreases because of the presence of the wake from the forward control surface.

Use of Fences to Increase Uniformity of Boundary Layer on Side Walls of Supersonic Wind Tunnels (open access)

Use of Fences to Increase Uniformity of Boundary Layer on Side Walls of Supersonic Wind Tunnels

"An investigation of the use of solid fences installed on the side walls of a supersonic wind tunnel to retard the development of transverse flow and thus to increase the uniformity of the side-wall boundary layer is reported. Beneficial results were obtained with fences which had depths of the order of the boundary-layer displacement thickness and which followed potential-flow streamlines through the nozzle. Reduction of the number of fences on each side wall from four to two eliminated their effectiveness" (p. 1).
