Component and over-all performance evaluation of an axial-flow turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds numbers

Report presenting an investigation in an altitude test chamber to evaluate the performance of an axial-flow turbojet engine over a range of engine-inlet Reynolds numbers. Reducing the engine inlet Reynolds number resulted in a reduction of corrected air flow and compressor efficiency but did not affect the compressor pressure ratio at a given corrected engine speed.

Considerations on the Effect of Beam-Dee Coupling in a Cyclotron RF System

Analysis of the problem of accelerating ions in a Thomas cyclotron has been confined almost entirely to the integration of various equations of motion (for single particles) for which a complete field description is necessary. In contrast, the problem of principal interest to rf system engineers concerns the gross transfer of electrical energy from an rf generator into an accelerated beam.

The Crystal Structures of NpC and Pu2O3 (open access)

The Crystal Structures of NpC and Pu2O3

NpC and Pu{sub 2}O{sub 3} have been identified by x-ray diffraction. NpC is face-centered cubic, NaCl structure with a = 5.004 {+-} 0.005 A Pu{sub 2}O{sub 3} is isomorphous with the hexagonal ''A form'' for the rare earth sesquioxides with a = 3.840 {+-} 0.004 A; c = 5.957 {+-} 0.006 A and has essentially the same atomic parameters at La{sub 2}O{sub 3}. The lattice dimensions are smaller than predicted for pure Pu{sub 2}O{sub 3}, implying that the average oxidation number of plutonium is between (III) and (IV).

A Description of the Acetone-Dye Solution Method of Demarcating a Leak Process Tubing While in the Pile

Abstract: "A method has been devised and successfully used for marking a leaking pile process tube prior to its removal from the pile, such that subsequent location of the leak is more easily accomplished. An acetone solution of Testor's Dark Red Airplane Dope is poured into the suspect tube. The solution leaks from the hole and stains the surrounding area a light pink. To date the method has been used on tubes 3573F, 0486F, 0867F, and 3670F."

Dynamic corrosion of a stainless-steel specimen by water at 500 degrees F using a toroid circulating apparatus (open access)

Dynamic corrosion of a stainless-steel specimen by water at 500 degrees F using a toroid circulating apparatus

A slug of air-saturated distilled water was circulated for 317 hours at a velocity of 15 feet per second in an AISI 347 stainless-steel toroid with a wall temperature of 500 F and a 30 F difference in temperature between the hot and cold sections. The depth of corrosion layer was 0.001 inch (0.028 in./yr) in the hot sector and 0.0007 inch (0.019 in./yr) in the cold sector; no mass transfer was observed. The results of gas, water, and X-ray diffraction analyses are given together with photomicrographs of sections taken from the hot and cold sections of the specimen.

Effect of Fuselage Interference on the Damping in Roll of Delta Wings of Aspect Ratio 4 in the Mach Number Range Between 0.6 and 1.6 as Determined With Rocket Propelled Vehicles

Report discussing an investigation using rocket-propelled vehicles in free flight to determine the effect of fuselage-diameter - wing-span ratio on the damping-in-roll characteristics of delta wings at a range of Mach numbers. The damping-in-roll derivative was found to decrease when the fuselage-diameter - wing-span ratio was increased. The experimental results are compared to calculated values.

The Effect of Gaps on Pile Reactivity (open access)

The Effect of Gaps on Pile Reactivity

From abstract: "The variation of the reactivity of a pile as a function of width of a transverse gap is obtained. The method involves first finding the boundary condition satisfied by the flux at the gap face. This, in principle, provides enough information for a complete solution of the pile equations. A method for calculating the reactivity change is presented. The calculated reactivity is compared with experiment and a brief discussion of the validity of the approximations is given."

Effects of Aspect Ratio on Air Flow at High Subsonic Mach Numbers

Schlieren photographs were used in an investigation to determine the effects of changing the aspect ratio from infinity to 2 on the air flow past a wing at high subsonic Mach numbers. The results indicated that the decreased effects of compressibility on drag coefficients for the finite wing are produced by a reduction in the compression shock and flow separation.
