100 Areas water treatment specifications

This memorandum discussed review of the data from tests using alum in the treatment of pile process water, and using activated silica as a coagulant aid during period of low water temperature, which shows that this method should be substituted for the present method of treating pile process water in all 100 Areas. It was recommended that the water treatment procedures and specifications attached to this memorandum be initiated as standard practice in all 100 Areas as soon as it is possible to make the necessary equipment modifications and installations.

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works

Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive increases in activity densities of fish from one year to the next. The levels of radioactivity are not sufficiently high to be hazardous to either the fish or persons eating them.

Memorandum presenting an investigation at M = 2.01 in the 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel to determine the effect of a series of nacelles on the longitudinal stability characteristics of a sweptback wing-body combination. Nacelle shape and position were varied on a configuration with a 6-percent-thick wing with an aspect ratio of 3.5, a taper ratio of 0.2, and 47 degrees of sweep at the quarter chord.

Aerodynamic characteristics of two 25-percent-area trailing-edge flaps on an aspect ratio 2 triangular wing at subsonic and supersonic speeds

Report presenting the results of an investigation of flap-type controls on a low-aspect-ratio triangular wing using NACA 0005-63 sections for a constant-chord and a constant-percent-chord control surface. Two flap profiles were investigated: one with a true contour and the other with a blunt trailing edge. Results regarding lift, drag, pitching moment, hinge moment, and rolling moments were obtained for several Mach numbers, a constant Reynolds number, and a range of angles of attack.

Marginal assembly rates can thus be determined for both metal and solution assemblies above which the disassembly by thermal expansion is explosive in the sense that the active material or containing vessel is ruptured.

From abstract: The Legin group area comprises five privately owned claims, nine Government claims, and some public land. The area is in parts of secs. 28 and 29, T. 43 N., R. 19 W., New Mexico principal meridian, San Miguel County, Colo. It is about 45 miles from the Government mill at Monticello, Utah, and 50 miles from the Vanadium Corporation of America mill at Naturita, Colo. The Legin group area has yielded a total production of more than 18,000 short tons of carnotite ore that averaged 0.32 percent U30 and 2.5 percent V 205 . Most of this production was accomplished during the years from 1935 to 1944, and from 1949 to October 1951.

Chemical development Separations Technology Unit. Progress report

The Redox Plant operated at a 76.7% time efficiency (IAF basis) and averaged 3.16 tons of uranium per operating day during the month. During the period from July 4 through July 13, 38,000 gallons of 72% ANN from Tygon-lined storage tank SS-112 were used in aqueous salt solution make-ups with some emulsion difficulty and fission-product carry-over resulting. New ANN, from stainless-steel tanks, was used for the balance of the month. An extensive (thermally) hot 60% HNO{sub 3} cleanout was given to the IA, IB, 2D, 3D, 2A, and 3A columns and associated salt solution head tanks to prepare the solvent-extraction battery for operation using 90-day `cooled` uranium. Continuous cross-over oxidation to improve 2A Column waste losses, and employment of KOH (vice NaOH) in 2DS, ICU, and 2EU butt additions to minimize Na in 3EU, were begun concurrently on July 20. Aged (90-day) uranium in head-end treated feed batches, was started to the IA Column on July 21, with early data indicating adequate two-cycle decontamination for both uranium and plutonium.

Note presenting experimental data demonstrating the decrease in stream Mach number observed to occur as the pressure of the inducing air in an induction nozzle was increased in the high-subsonic speed range. This performance characteristic was analytically demonstrated to be associated with choking of the induced flow.
