Plastic Stress-Strain Relations for Combined Tension and Compression

Note presenting an investigation to determine the validity of the plasticity theories and the correctness of various assumptions made in these theories. Plastic stress-strain relations for biaxial tension-compression principal stresses were determined for a 14S-T4 aluminum alloy. Since the constant-stress-ratio tests cannot distinguish between the flow and deformation theories, variable-stress-ratio tests and special biaxial tests were conducted.

Use of an approximate tangency condition is shown to increase the accuracy for bodies with corners. Tables of basic functions and standard computing forms are presented. The procedure is summarized so that one can apply it without necessarily understanding the details of the theory" (p. 1).

From abstract: A sequence of slightly radioactive Pliocene(?) rocks in the Split Rock area of central Wyoming is at least 600 feet thick, underlies an area of more than 25 square miles, and consists of alternating beds of tuffaceous shale, sandstone, and pumicite. Only a small part of the section has been examined. In addition to the uranium content of the strata, there has been secondary concentration of uranium in brecciated limestone similar to spring deposits that could be of Pliocene or Pleistocene age.

Note presenting testing of the gliding of one metal crystal with respect to another, along their mutual grain boundary, during high-temperature creep tests conducted with bicrystals of pure aluminum. Stresses of from 1 to 100 psi and temperatures from 200 to 650 degrees Celsius were employed. Results regarding grain boundary glide rate, influence of orientation difference between grains, influence of temperature, influence of applied stress, structure of the operated grain boundary, and structural changes within grains are provided.

Report presenting an analysis of meteorological icing data obtained in flight and some methods developed for the determination of the various simultaneous combinations of the three basic icing parameters (liquid-water content, drop diameter, and temperature) which would have equal probability of being exceeded in flight, the probability of exceeding any specified group of values of liquid-water content associated with temperature and drop-diameter values in specified ranges. These methods can be used to design ice prevention equipment for aircraft.

A mathematical basis is also provided for the future statistical analysis of meteorological icing data that can be obtained throughout the world.
