A Method of Selecting the Thickness, Hollowness, and Size of a Supersonic Wing for Least Drag and Sufficient Bending Strength at Specified Flight Conditions

Note presenting a consideration of a wing-selection problem sometimes encountered in the preliminary design of supersonic airplanes and missiles. The problem is to determine the span, section thickness ratio, and skin thickness or hollowness ratio of the wing of least drag when the plan form, section shape, wing lift requirement, and flight conditions are assumed known. An example of the application of the method to a diamond wing at Mach number 2.0 for a range of specified flight conditions is presented.

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico (open access)

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico

Abstract: Dark shale and arkosic sandstone south of Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico, contain as much as 4 percent copper and 0. 01 percent uranium on the basis of a few samples recently analyzed. The deposits occur primarily in the dark shale which is about 5 feet thick and dips about 900. Potential reserves of this material are very large. Prospecting and further geologic work will be necessary, however, to evaluate possibilities of these large tonnages. If the deposits can be mined for their copper content, the uranium might be recovered as a byproduct. Detailed mapping and possibly some trenching will be undertaken by the Geological Survey in order further to evaluate the deposits.

Investigation of the influence of fuselage and tail surfaces on low-speed static stability and rolling characteristics of a swept-wing model (open access)

Investigation of the influence of fuselage and tail surfaces on low-speed static stability and rolling characteristics of a swept-wing model

Results are presented of a wind-tunnel investigation to determine influence of the fuselage and tail on static stability and rotary derivatives in roll of a model having 45 degrees sweptback wing and tail surfaces. The wing alone and the model without the horizontal tail showed marginal longitudinal stability near maximum lift. The longitudinal stability of the complete model was satisfactory. The vertical tail produced larger increments of rate of change of lateral-force and yawing-moment coefficients with wing-tip helix angle than the fuselage or the horizontal tail.

Studies of carbon dioxide fixation in green plants using the C{sup 14} isotope have shown that in very short times phosphoglyceric acid contains most of the radioactivity. The tracer is present almost entirely in the carboxyl group. The importance of organic phosphates in the subsequent metabolism of phosphoglyceric acid can be seen from the accompanying photographs.
