Abstract: "The possibility of fabricating a lightweight control rod from one of several high cross-section materials was investigated. The major effort was directed toward the development of a titanium-clad rod containing a composite core of 25 weight per cent Gd2O3 in a matrix of titanium. Experimentation on both subscale and full-scale control-rod cores showed that the fabricating behavior of the two was not analogous. To roll the full-scale core successfully, it was necessary to lower the oxide content to 17 weight per cent. Subscale investigations were also carried out on titanium-cadmium, titanium-lanthanum, and titanium-gadolinium alloys."

From introduction: This report presents the results of the two phases of the work: study of the compatibility of beryllia bodies with a coating material, molybdenum; and studies of beryllia-beryllium body fabrication.

From abstract: "This report describes the construction and operation of a mixer-settler pilot plant for the purification of mantle-grade thorium nitrate. The liquid-liquid extraction process utilized 30% tributyl phosphate - 70% 'Solvesso-100' as the organic solvent and nitric acid as the salting agent. Continuous steady-state operation of the equipment was demonstrated, with very good recovery of thorium."

From abstract: "The variation of the reactivity of a pile as a function of width of a transverse gap is obtained. The method involves first finding the boundary condition satisfied by the flux at the gap face. This, in principle, provides enough information for a complete solution of the pile equations. A method for calculating the reactivity change is presented. The calculated reactivity is compared with experiment and a brief discussion of the validity of the approximations is given."

Technical report calculating "effective removal cross sections" for Pb, Fe and O from measurements of fast neutron does in the water surrounding the BSF reactor. The values for Pb and Fe agree quite well with those previously determined from Lid tank data, whereas that for O is somewhat lower. [From Abstract]

Report describing methods of determining trace impurities in plutonium in connection with the Metal Fabrication Process. The methods included are the cupferron extraction-copper spark method and the direct copper spark method.

Abstract: "A method has been devised and successfully used for marking a leaking pile process tube prior to its removal from the pile, such that subsequent location of the leak is more easily accomplished. An acetone solution of Testor's Dark Red Airplane Dope is poured into the suspect tube. The solution leaks from the hole and stains the surrounding area a light pink. To date the method has been used on tubes 3573F, 0486F, 0867F, and 3670F."

The purpose of this report is to present information on materials which can possibly be employed in the HF-H₂O-H₂SO₄-system in the extractive distillation process to be investigated at NBL.

Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive increases in activity densities of fish from one year to the next. The levels of radioactivity are not sufficiently high to be hazardous to either the fish or persons eating them.

The following report records the study of the optimum pH of the method of the colorimetric dimethylglyoxime for nickel before the addition of oxidant and the concentration of ammonium persulfate needed to insure complete oxidation to higher nickel valence states and thus prevent precipitation of less soluble nickelous salt that was made. Results of this study is presented in Table 1.

Report discussing a method for uranium spectography. The analytical procedures are described in detail, as well as the restocking and maintenance procedures that are associated with the method.

This technical report is a sequel to LA-596, "Efficiency for Very Slow Assembly" by K. Fuchs. Herein are given estimates of temperature rise and pressure developed as a result of active material slowly being driven supercritical. Marginal assembly rates can thus be determined for both metal and solution assemblies above which the disassembly by thermal expansion is explosive in the sense that the active material or containing vessel is ruptured.
