An analysis of the potentialities of a two-stage counterrotating supersonic compressor (open access)

An analysis of the potentialities of a two-stage counterrotating supersonic compressor

From Introduction: "The supersonic axial-flow compressor, for example, appears to offer advantages of high stage pressure ratio and height weight flows (reference 1) but problems peculiar to this compressor type have accompanied its introduction. For high single-stage pressure ratios (>4) the problem of converting the high dynamic energy to useful pressure arises (reference 2). In addition, the high tip speeds and weight flows combine to create a difficult situation for the turbine designer."

Evaluation of Military Individual and Collective Protection Devices and Clothing (open access)

Evaluation of Military Individual and Collective Protection Devices and Clothing

Under conditions resulting from surface and underground detonations of atomic bombs, tests were conducted on Chemical Corps impregnated and unimpregnated protective clothing, Individual Protective Mask M9A1 with M11 Canister, Tank Collective Protector E26 and E22, and Protective Ointment M5. Both impregnated and unimpregnated clothing were capable of preventing contact between the skin and radioactive dusts. Unimpregnated clothing demonstrated better contanmination-decontamination characteristics, but the secondary radiation from all clothing was negligible. The protective cover was effective in preventing contamination of clothing. The M9A1 mask with M11 canister furnished complete protection against inhalation of radioactive dust. The flltering efficiencies of the E26 tank collective protectors were found to be very high, and no deficiencies were found in the unit. The filtering efficiencies of the E22 tank collective protectors were also high. Panels coated with M5 ointment were found to be much more highly contaminated than bare panels. (auth)

Carnotite Resources of the Legin Group Area, San Miguel County, Colorado

From abstract: The Legin group area comprises five privately owned claims, nine Government claims, and some public land. The area is in parts of secs. 28 and 29, T. 43 N., R. 19 W., New Mexico principal meridian, San Miguel County, Colo. It is about 45 miles from the Government mill at Monticello, Utah, and 50 miles from the Vanadium Corporation of America mill at Naturita, Colo. The Legin group area has yielded a total production of more than 18,000 short tons of carnotite ore that averaged 0.32 percent U30 and 2.5 percent V 205 . Most of this production was accomplished during the years from 1935 to 1944, and from 1949 to October 1951.

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico (open access)

Uranium-Bearing Copper Deposits Near Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico

Abstract: Dark shale and arkosic sandstone south of Guadalupita, Mora County, New Mexico, contain as much as 4 percent copper and 0. 01 percent uranium on the basis of a few samples recently analyzed. The deposits occur primarily in the dark shale which is about 5 feet thick and dips about 900. Potential reserves of this material are very large. Prospecting and further geologic work will be necessary, however, to evaluate possibilities of these large tonnages. If the deposits can be mined for their copper content, the uranium might be recovered as a byproduct. Detailed mapping and possibly some trenching will be undertaken by the Geological Survey in order further to evaluate the deposits.

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works (open access)

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works

Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive increases in activity densities of fish from one year to the next. The levels of radioactivity are not sufficiently high to be hazardous to either the fish or persons eating them.
