Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming
From abstract: An airborne radioactivity survey of a selected area in the Red Desert, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, containing outcrops of radioactive lignites and shales of known surface extent and uranium content, was flown on flight lines at three levels, respectively 250, 500, and 1,000 feet above the ground and spaced at one-quarter mile intervals. Measurements from three identical dual-channel radiation detectors were simultaneously recorded to obtain data at various distances from natural radioactive sources of known configuration. The radiation intensity measurements were fully corrected for all extraneous effects and were compiled as profiles of radiation intensity, as an isoradioactivity contour map, and as curves showing the relationship between radiation intensity and distance from the source.

A Solvent Extraction Method for Neptunium (237) Analysis
Technical report describing a rapid and quantitative radiochemical method for the analysis of neptunium (237). This method is based on the extraction of neptunium (IV) with thenoyl-trifluoracetone in xylene. Effects of Design Details on the Fatigue Strength of 355-T6 Sand-Cast Aluminum Alloy
Note presenting static and fatigue tests made on 355-T6 sand-cast plate-type aluminum-alloy specimens incorporating holes, bosses, and ribs. In the static tests, the tensile strength of the plain plate-type specimen agreed within 3 percent with the strength of separately cast test bars. Of the design details studied, the unreinforced hole was the most effective stress-raiser for fatigue lives from 10,000 to 25,000,000 cycles.

A rapid approximate method for determining velocity distribution on impeller blades of centrifugal compressors
Report presenting the development of a rapid approximate method of analysis for both compressible and incompressible, nonviscous flow through radial- or mixed-flow centrifugal compressors with arbitrary hub and shroud contours and arbitrary blade shape. The method is used with eight numerical examples for two-dimensional flow, covering a wide range of flow rate, impeller-tip speed, number of blades, and blade curvature.

Flight investigation of the effect of transient wing response on wing strains of a twin-engine transport airplane in rough air
Report presenting a flight investigation on a twin-engine transport airplane to determine the strains associated with the dynamic behavior of the wing during flights through rough air. Flights were made in clear-air turbulence for different wing fuel loads and for two speed conditions at a range of altitudes. Results indicated that the bending strains per unit normal acceleration in gusts were approximately 20 percent higher than those in slow pull-ups for all measuring positions and flight conditions of the tests.

Temperature distribution in internally heated walls of heat exchangers with noncircular flow passages using coolants with very low Prandtl number
Report presenting a prediction of the magnitude of temperature variation in order to detect the places of highest temperature and to determine the operating temperatures admissible for the material of which the heat exchanger is composed. Results regarding the temperature distribution in triangular passages, temperature distribution in rectangular passages, influence of velocity field on temperature field, and a comparison of Prandtl number 1 solution are provided.

Investigation of NACA 64,2-432 and 64,3-440 airfoil sections with boundary-layer control and an analytical study of their possible applications
Report presenting testing of NACA 64-series airfoil sections to determine the effect of boundary-layer control by means of suction through an airfoil chord on the pressure distribution, lift, and drag characteristics of two different types of airfoil sections. Substantial reductions in wake drag were obtained through a wide range of lift coefficients with relatively moderate flow coefficients and pressure-loss coefficients. Results regarding airfoil-section data and effect of boundary-layer control on lift-drag ratio are provided.

Method of Analysis for Compressible Flow Arbitrary Turbomachine Blades on General Surface of Revolution
Note presenting a method of obtaining the flow of a nonviscous compressible fluid past arbitrary compressor or turbine blades between two neighboring surfaces of revolution. Satisfactory results were obtained by the method described in the investigation of the detailed flow variation of a compressible fluid past typical high-solidity, highly cambered thick turbine blades on a cylindrical surface.

Approximate design method for high-solidity blade elements in compressors and turbines
Note presenting an approximate blade-element design method for compressible or incompressible nonviscous flow in high-solidity stators or rotors of axial-, radial-, or mixed-flow compressors, turbines, or two-dimensional cascades. The method is based upon channel-type flow between blade elements on a specified surface of revolution that lies between the hub and shroud and is concentric with the axis of the compressor turbine.

Construction and Use of Charts in Design Studies of Gas Turbines
"A method is presented for the computation and graphic representation of a series of possible turbine designs for any specific application. The use of a preliminary design chart is suggested for determining the number of stages and the effects of exit whirl and annular-area divergence on possible configurations. A specific design chart can then be made to aid in the study of the relations between turbine radius ratio, diameter, and significant design parameters such as Mach numbers, turning angles, and blade root stresses" (p. 1).

Report presenting a method for calculating the initial tangents of contours of constant destiny, pressure, and Mach number behind a curved, axially symmetric shock wave has been desired. Initial tangents of density contours are obtained that fair well into contours determined from interferograms for the flow about a sphere at Mach number 1.62. the flow field obtianed from the shock wave by the method of characteristics is compared with that obtained by interferometry.

"An experimental determination of the critical bending moment of a box beam stiffened by posts is described and discussed. The experimental buckling load is in good agreement with that given by theory. Since appreciable distortion of the beam cross section occurred before the buckling load was reached, modification of post construction by the use of several ribs may be necessary for maintenance of the rectangular shape of the cross section" (p. 1).

Experimental study of an angle-of-attack vane mounted ahead of the nose of an airplane for use as a sensing device for an acceleration alleviator
Report presenting an investigation to determine the ability of a vane mounted ahead of the nose of an airplane to give an indication of the average angle of attack over the entire wing span during flight through rough air. The main purpose was to determine the suitability of such a vane as a sensing device for an acceleration alleviator. The vane gives a sufficiently accurate measure of average angle of attack over the wing span to be used that way, but rapid fluctuations in angle of attack caused by turbulence would have to be filtered from the output.

Flow Separation Ahead of Blunt Bodies at Supersonic Speeds
Note presenting a discussion of supersonic flow against blunt bodies placed in boundary layers or wakes, which concludes that wedge-shaped or conical dead-air regions should form ahead of the body if part of the upstream velocity profile is subsonic and if the body is fairly thick relative to the initial boundary layer or wake thickness. For the intermediate range of body thicknesses, an analysis of the two-dimensional flow against blunt bodies mounted on a flat plate agreed quantitatively with experimental results in a range of Mach numbers.
