This memorandum discusses the roflanging of the corroded rear Van Stone flanges at the B Pile after cutting 3/8-inch off the rear gun barrel which should place the B Pile in a condition as good as, or better than that of the D or F Piles.

Report presenting some charts on the reflection of a propeller on the basis of efficiency for application to a light airplane design. Various values of power are covered for several different airspeeds, propeller diameters, and blade numbers.

This report provides the monthly radiation monitoring sampling surveys for 1947.

"In the search for an energy source independent of air for the propulsion of underwater craft, attention was early concentrated on T-substance. It was possible to convince the OKM [NACA comment: Navy High Command] very quickly of the importance of this material. In 1934, the first experiments were undertaken" (p. 1).

"A concise nonmathematical review of the subject of boundary layers is presented. The contents, although insufficient for the solution of specific problems, are sufficient for an introduction to the subject. A list of reference papers is given from which the detailed knowledge necessary for the solution of specific problems can be obtained" (p. 1).

This report contains a letter, written on July 25, 1947, concerning the sampling program at Columbia River. The author suggests reducing the sampling schedule. He states that chemical composition sampling should be reduced by one-fifth and radioactivity sampling be reduced by one-third. He suggests that only mid-channel samples are required for representative studies. He further states that weekly sampling should occur. By following these suggestions, the cost of the sampling program should be drastically reduced because the hours of manpower taken to sample the river, analyze the data, organize, and store information would be reduced.

Data acquired form the sampling of Yakima River water-t Tests is presented. The sampling took place on June 24, 1947. The samples were analyzed for ph value, alkalinity, chlorine, harness, NH(sub 3), NO(sub 3), biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity.

It is known that the compressibility shocks accompanying local or total supersonic flows lead to pronounced flow separations which result in unusually high energy losses on airplane wings, vanes, and in diffusers. These phenomena were investigated experimentally and theoretically.

Report discussing methods and theories of solvent extraction. Factors that influence solvent extraction, such as the distribution coefficient, relative solubility, and physical properties of the solvent, are discussed as well.

Abstract: A spectrophotometric determination of iron employing the ferrous-1, 10-phenanthroline complex has been developed. The colored complex is measured at a wave-length where interference of the yellow uranyl ion is a minimum. Recommended procedures and analytical results using these procedures are given. Data are presented which indicate that the iron in the acid-insoluble residue is negligible. A method for the determination of iron in ammonium oxalate is included.

Note presenting a continuation of a theoretical investigation of the stability of the laminar boundary layer in a compressible fluid. A series of equations are given that provide information related to Reynolds number effects and the physical significance of the stability analysis.

Note presenting a method for strength analysis of stiffened shear webs, which has been revised and extended from a previous report. A set of formulas and graphs which cover all aspects of strength analysis is given, experimental data are presented, and the accuracy of the formulas as judged by comparison with the data is discussed.

Report discussing experiments investigating the effects of radiation and metal toxicity on the function of the liver, kidneys, adrenals, and bone marrow of experimental animals.

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the change in spanwise load distribution at high Mach numbers, which is of considerable interest because lateral movement of the center of lift affects the trim, stability, and structural factors of safety of an airplane. The data is not sufficient to permit isolation of the effects of changes in wing configuration, but in a majority of cases, the tests reveal a tendency for the center of lift to shift outboard with increasing Mach number.

"This is the second of a series of six reports dealing with three- and six-component measurements on the tapering series at small aspect ratio. The present report concerns the trapezoidal wing with fuselage" (p. 1).

Report presenting tests to determine the effect of heat on the pressure drop through radiator tubes made to establish the adequacy of previously developed theory. Results regarding the evaluation of incompressible pressure drop, tubes with smooth entrances, and tubes with transition fixed are provided.
