The development and application of high-critical-speed nose inlets (open access)

The development and application of high-critical-speed nose inlets

From Summary: "An analysis of the nose-inlet shapes developed in previous investigations to represent the optimum from the standpoint of critical speed has shown that marked similarity exists between the nondimensional profiles of inlets which have widely different proportions and critical speeds. With the nondimensional similarity of such profiles established, the large differences in the critical speeds of these nose inlets must be a function of their proportions. An investigation was undertaken in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel to establish the effects of nose-inlet proportions on critical Mach number and to develop a rational method for the design of high-critical-speed nose inlets to meet desired requirements."

Graphical and Analytical Methods for the Determination of a Flow of a Compressible Fluid Around an Obstacle (open access)

Graphical and Analytical Methods for the Determination of a Flow of a Compressible Fluid Around an Obstacle

"Chaplygin introduced the hodograph method in the theory of compressible fluid flows and developed a method for constructing stream functions of such flows. This method, which has been extensively used in investigation of compressible fluid flows, is limited in certain respects. The expression for the stream function obtained in this manner can represent only certain types of flow patterns. In general, flow patterns obtained in this way cannot represent the whole flow around an obstacle, but only a part of such a flow, and therefore several expressions are needed in order to obtain the whole flow" (p. 1).

On the Circulatory Subsonic Flow of a Compressible Fluid Past a Circular Cylinder

"The circulatory subsonic flow around an infinite circular cylinder is computed using the linearized pressure-volume relation, by a method developed in a previous report. Formulas and graphs are given for the velocity and pressure distributions, the circulation, the lift, and the dependence of the critical Mach number upon the position of the stagnation point" (p. 1).

Economy of internally cooling only the overheated cylinders of aircraft engines

Report presenting an analysis of cylinder-to-cylinder temperature and mixture distributions of four different aircraft engines to determine the possible economy of automatically supply water or additional fuel to only those cylinders having excessive temperatures. The cooling problem as distinguished from the fuel-knock problem was studied and an analysis limited to those cases in which additional cooling is ordinarily obtained by carburetor enrichment was made.

Tables and Charts for the Evaluation of Profile Drag From Wake Surveys at High Subsonic Speeds

Report presents tables and charts for the evaluation of profile drag from wake surveys at high supersonic speeds. Two methods of evaluation are presented: an exact method that can be used on a wake of any shape and a simple approximate method that can be used when the variation of total-pressure loss across the wave has a typical form.

Report on a Differential Ionization Chamber

From abstract: "A chamber was constructed with three electrodes dividing the space into two regions of 800 c.c. The surfaces of one of these were coated with boron carbide. With opposite potentials on two electrodes, ion currents to the collecting electrode due to gamma rays were practically cancelled and ion currents due to alpha rays induced by slow neutrons were measured."

Axial Fatigue Test at Two Stress Amplitudes of 0.032-Inch 24S-T Sheet Specimens With a Circular Hole

Report presenting testing of the effect of applying a number of cycles of a high fatigue stress followed by a number of cycles of relatively low stress to failure has been investigated on 93 drilled specimens of a 24S-T sheet. The results indicated that any general formula for endurance must take sequence into consideration, which makes overly simple formulas inadequate to describe endurance over varying stress amplitudes.

The Effect of Some Design Parameters on Ditching Characteristics

"The purpose of this report is to provide designers of airplanes with information that will be helpful in obtaining good ditching characteristics in new designs. The results from a number of model tests and report of actual ditchings are used as a basis for which to draw conclusions as to the effect on ditching performance of general arrangement, interior arrangement, fuselage shape, and other design parameters. The characteristics of several types of ditching aids that could be incorporated in a design are also discussed" (p. 1).

The Melting and Casting of Uranium in Sulfide Crucibles (open access)

The Melting and Casting of Uranium in Sulfide Crucibles

Uranium was successfully cast at temperatures as high as 1900 to 2000 deg C in crucibles made from CeS, CeS/sub 1.38/, ThS, ThS/sub 1.75/, and ThU/sub 0.7/S/sub 2/ with the sulfur pickup in all cases less than 0.15 wt.%, in some cases at low temperatures being less than 0.005%. A summary of actual sulfur absorption for different experimental temperatures and crucible types is given. The effect of the molten mixture of U and UBr/sub 3/(Br/U =2) upon some sulfide refractories was investigated. The results indicate that only ThS/sub 2/ and divalent sulfides like ThUS/sub 2/, US, ThS, etc., would withstand the U--UBr/sub 3/ mixture. Uranium may be separated from metal salt mixtures (CaCl/sub 2/, SrBr/ sub 2/, BaI/sub 2/, etc.) by distillation of the salt and fusion of the U in a sulfide crucible. (auth)

The Stopping Power of Metals (open access)

The Stopping Power of Metals

Summary. The effect of the conduction electrons on the stopping power of metals has been considered from two essentially different points of view. No numerical calculations have been carried out, because we have found no completely satisfactory was of computing Z'e, the effective charge on the moving ion. A rather crude estimate made on the basis of the Thomas-Fermi atomic model indicates that Z'2/E is roughly constant. Using this relation one finds that the stopping power of the conduction electrons is of the same order of magnitude as the stopping power due to bound electron excitation, and is important for the greater part of the range of the particle.
