1. K+ Charge Exchange - Search For K+ Charge Exchange

An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.

An Alternate Interpretation of the Results on then p-Meson Decay Electron Spectrum (open access)

An Alternate Interpretation of the Results on then p-Meson Decay Electron Spectrum

We have preliminarily reported the interpretation of our experimental results that the intensity of the spectrum at the maximum energy was zero. But, as reported in the second paper UCRL-1261 we found that the results may also be fitted to a different spectrum with finite intensity at the maximum energy. Quite recently, however, the most probable value for the mass of the p-meson has been revised by two independent groups based on two different experiments.

The Bevatron 9.9-Mev Proton Linear Accelerator (open access)

The Bevatron 9.9-Mev Proton Linear Accelerator

The Bevatron requires an intense source of high energy protons. The machine should accept monoenergetic protons for a duration of approximately 500 microseconds once every 6 seconds. To satisfy the requirements of small loss due to scattering by the gas in the accelerating chamber, a 9.9-Mev linear accelerator has been built and operated.

The Chelate Process: [Part] 5. Investigation in Horizontal Extractors

The recovery of plutonium has been demonstrated in a laboratory countercurrent horizontal extractor using the TTA process. Using three extractive stages and two washing stages in each step, a recovery of 91 percent has been obtained in the chelation step and a recovery of 99.9+ percent in the de-chelation step. With five extractive stages, recoveries of 94-98 percent have been found for the chelation step.

Chemical Reactions In Crossed Molecular Beams (open access)

Chemical Reactions In Crossed Molecular Beams

Even in its present primitive stage the molecular beam method promises to open up many opportunities for detailed studies of reactive collisions. The early results described here have revealed several features inaccessible to the traditional methods of kinetics. We hope this program of beam studies will ultimately provide the basis for constructing a theory of the molecular mechanics of reactions. By borrowing what are now everyday techniques in nuclear physics (modulation of the beams; mass analysis and counting of detected ions) it appears possible to gain from four to six orders of magnitude.

Considerations on the Effect of Beam-Dee Coupling in a Cyclotron RF System (open access)

Considerations on the Effect of Beam-Dee Coupling in a Cyclotron RF System

Analysis of the problem of accelerating ions in a Thomas cyclotron has been confined almost entirely to the integration of various equations of motion (for single particles) for which a complete field description is necessary. In contrast, the problem of principal interest to rf system engineers concerns the gross transfer of electrical energy from an rf generator into an accelerated beam.

Energy Spectrum of 320 Mev Deuterons From He3 (open access)

Energy Spectrum of 320 Mev Deuterons From He3

The previous calculation of the energy spectrum of the high energy deuteron beam from the stripping of He3 (UCRL-2150) was thought to be in error, especially as regards the low energy tail, on the basis of some experiments with the neutron time-of-flight detector, which indicated a considerably narrower spectrum than that calculated in UCRL-2150. Since the value used for the attenuation cross section of deuterons in uranium is considerably lower than that presently considered correct a new calculation was made using this latter cross section. Since the equations used in this new calculation differ somewhat from those used in the previous report a brief derivation is given here.

II. K+ Charge Exchange - Production Of Ko Mesone By Charge Exchange Of K+ In Propane

In another paper there was reported an attempt to observe the charge-exchange process in a counter-triggered multiplate cloud chamber at the Bevatron but the interpretation was ambiguous. Shortly after the close of that experiment the 30-in. propane bubble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory was completed and able to be used for a combined engineering test and experiment. The existence of Reaction (1) has been confirmed in this experiment, and an approximate cross-section value for carbon is calculated.

The Nuclear Spin Of Neodymium-141 (open access)

The Nuclear Spin Of Neodymium-141

The spin of neodymium-141 was measured by the method of atomic beams and found to be 3/2. A lower limit placed on the hyperfine separation of the states with total angular momentum [formula] by second-order perturbation theory shows [formula]. A prerequisite for the determination of the nuclear spin from hyperfine-structure measurements is the knowledge of the electronic structure. The ground-state configuration of neodymium is known and the value is used throughout this work.

On Charge Conjugation (open access)

On Charge Conjugation

It is shown that under very simple and general assumptions the existence of an antiunitary reflection transformation and the charge gauge group implies the existence of an antiparticle corresponding to a given charged particle. Similar consequences follow on replacing the charge gauge group by the baryon gauge group. No assumptions as to specific wave equations, or indeed the existence of local fields, are made.

Scattering In The K=O Band Of Odd-Odd Deformed Nuclei (open access)

Scattering In The K=O Band Of Odd-Odd Deformed Nuclei

A displacement of energy levels has been observed in the K=O band of odd-odd deformed nuclei. It is shown that this shift is due to a particular type of scattering in which the final state is obtained from the initial state by a rotation of 180'. This circumstance allows one to state certain selection rules on the parts of the n-p residual interaction responsible for the shift. The Wigner component of the force cannot contribute to the shift. In certain cases the contribution of all central forces will be strongly damped allowing observation of the tensor force scattering contribution. Numerical results are presented.

Semiempirical Correlation Of BU⁺ Annihilation Rates In Metals

It is shown that the annihilation rates of positrons in metals can be correlated to a good degree by a simple model of the annihilation process based on an assumption that the fractional number of electrons available for annihilation varies as the inverse of the atomic volume of the metal.

Single Particle Excitation Theory Of The Photonuclear Giant Resonance (open access)

Single Particle Excitation Theory Of The Photonuclear Giant Resonance

Calculations of the photonuclear giant resonance according to the Wilkinson model are presented in this report. In this model the giant resonance in the cross section for absorption of gamma rays by nuclei is ascribed to the excitation of large numbers of nucleons in closed shells. The model generally predicts correctly the integrated cross section for the giant resonance, bu the resonance energy is too low. Results are presented in a series of tables and formulas so that the integrated cross section may be calculated for any given nucleus.

Stopping Power and Ion Density (open access)

Stopping Power and Ion Density

A "particle" of charge Ze moves with velocity v, mass M, energy [formula], through a "substance" of atomic number Zo, density N atoms/cm3. We have to consider the process of slowing down, and the nature of the trail of ions produced. Very slow particles are of little interest, as their range is very short. If Z is large, or if the particle is an electron, there are complications which we postpone. Thus, our considerations will apply particularly to protons, deuterons, o< -particles, and mesons.

Theoretical Considerations on Cell Shape, Convection, and an Area Anomaly Pertinent to Developing a Moving Boundary Theory for Ultracentrifugation (open access)

Theoretical Considerations on Cell Shape, Convection, and an Area Anomaly Pertinent to Developing a Moving Boundary Theory for Ultracentrifugation

The intuitive concept that a sector shaped centrifuge cell is free from convection is criticized. Not only is a form of convection present for a single sedimenting species, but a more insidious type occurs in a mixture having an appreciable Johnston-Ogston effect. Rather than striving for convection-free sedimentation, the proposal is to utilize if possible an apparently harmless type of convection occurring in a very thin annulus in order to avoid the convection extending between boundaries in a mixture. The requirement that the concentrations be independent of time meets this condition and yields a hyperbolic cell, which is approximated by a sector cell placed in the rotor backwards. Simultaneously, area measurements and calculations involving the Johnston-Ogston anomaly are simplified because of the time independence.

Use Of Pyroelectric Devices For Measuring Small Temperature Changes

A technique for measuring extremely small temperature changes by means of a pyroelectric device is described. The sensing element is a short thin rod of polarized barium titanate ceramic with electrodes on the ends. The electric charges produced by changes in temperature are measured by a vibrating-reed electrometer. A number of calorimetric and noncalorimetric applications for the device are suggested.
