Report on shark predation of Hawaiian monk seals that includes three parts : a report from Workshop II on November 5-6, 2008, knowledge about shark predation related to Hawaiian monk seals, and HMSRP premises, positions, and post-workshop developments.

Abstract: data on the Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schnauinslandi, including pup production, pupping locations, and injuries at Lisianski Island in 1982 are presented. Twenty-eight pups were born, of which 26 survived to weaning. Of the observed births, 75% occurred on the east side of the island. Average nursing period for 14 mother-pup pairs was 37.4 days. One exchange of pups was observed. Ten seals were injured while personnel were present on the island. Four of these injuries were attributable to attacks by adult male seals.

The following report is based on findings from the observational studies on the Hawaiian monk seal in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands during 1995. The objectives of this research were to conduct beach counts (censuses), tag weaned pups and immature seals for permanent identification, identify other seals by previously applied tags and by natural or applied markings, monitor reproduction, survival, injuries, entanglements, interatoll movements, disappearances, and deaths, perform necropsies, collect tissue samples for DNA analysis, and inventory, sample, and destroy debris capable of entangling wildlife.

The following document presents results of field studies of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal conducted in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands during 2002. These studies provide information to evaluate the status and trends of monk seal subpopulations; natural history traits such as survival, reproduction, growth, behavior, and feeding habits; and the success of various activities designed to facilitate population growth.

Also given are well number (when appropriate), site type (spring, well, fumarole), latitude, longitude (both use decimal minutes), GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). In conducting a search of Appendix A, site names are quite useful for locating springs or wells for which a specific name is commonly used, but sites which do not have specific names are more difficult to locate.
