Development work on superconducting coils for a large mirror fusion test facility (MFTF). [Nb--Ti] (open access)

Development work on superconducting coils for a large mirror fusion test facility (MFTF). [Nb--Ti]

The geometry and size of the superconducting coils for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) proposed by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL) impose certain constraints on the Nb-Ti superconductor. The most promising fabrication process is a wrap-around technique in which a superconducting core is ''wrapped'' in stabilizing copper that contains built-in cooling channels. Insulation between pancake coils and turns is provided by perforated sheets and buttons of epoxy-impregnated fiberglass. Preliminary heat-transfer tests conducted on short samples of single conductor and on a nine-conductor bundle are reported and related to the heat generated in ''normal'' conductors. Investigation of joining techniques, necessary because of the length of conductor needed for the MFTF magnet (about 21 km per coil), show that cold-welded butt joints best meet all requirements. In a test coil now being built, approximately 2 km of prototype MFTF conductor will provide a self-field of about 4 T. Supplementary coils will boost the field to about 6.7 T. The test coils will be used to study cryostatic stability, the propagation and recovery of normal zones, and diagnostic techniques.

Dielectric coatings on metal substrates (open access)

Dielectric coatings on metal substrates

Large aperture, beryllium substrate-based mirrors have been used to focus high intensity pulsed laser beams. Finished surfaces have high reflectivity, low wavefront distortion, and high laser damage thresholds. This paper describes the development of a series of metallic coatings, surface finishing techniques, and dielectric overcoatings to meet specified performance requirements. Beryllium substrates were coated with copper, diamond-machined to within 5 micro-inches to final contour, nickel plated, and abrasively figured to final contour. Bond strengths for several bonding processes are presented. Dielectric overcoatings were deposited on finished multimetallic substrates to increase both reflectivity and the damage thresholds. Coatings were deposited using both high and low temperature processes which induce varying stresses in the finished coating substrate system. Data are presented to show the evolution of wavefront distortion, reflectivity, and damage thresholds throughout the many steps involved in fabrication.

Failure analysis of a Hastelloy C-276 geothermal injection pump shaft (open access)

Failure analysis of a Hastelloy C-276 geothermal injection pump shaft

A metallurgical analysis of a fractured Hastelloy C-276 brine injection pump shaft was carried out to determine the cause of failure. Loss of load carrying cross section due to intergranular corrosion by molten bronze bearing alloy followed by torsional overload of the remaining section was the cause of failure. Lack of evidence for brine induced corrosion or stress corrosion of the Hastelloy C-276 alloy is consistent with prior successful experience with this material in contact with high temperature, high salinity Salton Sea Geothermal Field brines.

Hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance basic data for Hutchinson NTMS Quadrangle, Kansas (open access)

Hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance basic data for Hutchinson NTMS Quadrangle, Kansas

Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Hutchinson Quadrangle, Kansas are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 592 groundwater and 616 stream sediment samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed. The groundwater data indicate that the southwestern corner of the quadrangle offers some potential for uranium mineralization. Five large clusters of groundwaters with high uranium values occur here. Wells in the southwestern corner produce waters from the Permian Nippewalla Group and the overlying Kiowa Shale that often contain high concentrations of arsenic, molybdenum, selenium, and vanadium which are known to associate with uranium in sandstone deposits. The stream sediment data indicate that most of the uranium and thorium anomalies occur as placer-type concentrations associated with Quaternary deposits. There are three areas that show groups of high uranium and thorium concentrations in the stream sediments; one in the northeast in Chase, Lyon, Morris, and Wabaunsee Counties; one in Dickinson and Geary Counties; and the third, the large area west of long. 97/sup 0/ …

Method of inspecting Raschig rings by neutron absorption counting (open access)

Method of inspecting Raschig rings by neutron absorption counting

A neutron counting method for inspecting borosilicate glass Raschig rings and an apparatus designed specifically for this method are discussed. The neutron count ratios for rings of a given thickness show a linear correlation to the boron oxide content of the rings. The count ratio also has a linear relationship to the thickness of rings of a given boron oxide content. Consequently, the experimentally-determined count ratio and physically-measured thickness of Raschig rings can be used to statistically predict their boron oxide content and determine whether or not they meet quality control acceptance criteria.

Near-term electric-vehicle program. Phase II. Mid-term review summary report (open access)

Near-term electric-vehicle program. Phase II. Mid-term review summary report

The general objective of the Near-Term Electric Vehicle Program is to confirm that, in fact, the complete spectrum of requirements placed on the automobile (e.g., safety, producibility, utility, etc.) can still be satisfied if electric power train concepts are incorporated in lieu of contemporary power train concepts, and that the resultant set of vehicle characteristics are mutually compatible, technologically achievable, and economically achievable. The focus of the approach to meeting this general objective involves the design, development, and fabrication of complete electric vehicles incorporating, where necessary, extensive technological advancements. A mid-term summary is presented of Phase II which is a continuation of the preliminary design study conducted in Phase I of the program. Information is included on vehicle performance and performance simulation models; battery subsystems; control equipment; power systems; vehicle design and components for suspension, steering, and braking; scale model testing; structural analysis; and vehicle dynamics analysis. Preliminary designs for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) stationkeeping subsystems (SKSS). Task II. Conceptual design. Final report (open access)

Preliminary designs for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) stationkeeping subsystems (SKSS). Task II. Conceptual design. Final report

The study is presented in five sections: design loads, conceptual designs, trade studies, cost analysis and concept evaluation and ranking. Extensive appendixes provide back up calculations and data to support the results. Environmental forces and yaw moments acting on the barge and spar in the various design sea states are presented including wave, wind and current effects. A parametric analysis illustrates the impact on holding power requirement of varying the return periods for operational and extreme sea state. The conceptual designs are presented for the barge followed by those for the spar, including configuration definition, performance characteristics, interfaces, areas for development, and deployment scenarios for selected concepts. The concept definition is followed by a set of trade studies that were performed to evaluate candidate anchor types and anchor leg materials. Parametric variations in anchor leg characteristics, wire-rope-to-chain length ratio for example, illustrate the influence of the significant design parameters on performance. An extensive cost analysis of the candidate SKSS concepts is presented, including cost estimates, life cycle cost scenarios leading to expected value of life cycle cost, and cost equivalence of operational failures. An evaluation of the eight SKSS concepts is presented, including assessment of performance and rankings based on …

Revised error analysis of LOFT secondary calorimetric power equation (open access)

Revised error analysis of LOFT secondary calorimetric power equation

A second-order error analysis of the LOFT secondary calorimetric power equation was performed to determine a figure for system accuracy for use in safety analysis and program evaluation. A realistic figure of accuracy for the Secondary Coolant System (SCS) was developed reflecting the relative importance of each measured parameter. This analysis was performed using SOERP, a second-order error propagation computer code. The final 2sigma tolerance band on calculated calorimetric power was found to be 0.720% of the mean calculated power in the full power (55MW) range. The second order error analysis contained in this report is valid provided the following assumptions are met: (1) SCS is at steady state, and (2) errors in instruments are normally distributed.
