Defects and morphological concerns in electroluminescent polymers
The degradation of luminescence in phenylenevinylene polymers is due to exciton diffusion to quenching defects. The microscopic structure of these defects is identified by in-situ vibrational spectroscopy. The authors present evidence that the defect quenching is due to charge transfer by studies on model phenylenevinylene oligomer. In the absence of defect quenchers, the authors have achieved nearly exponential photoluminescence decay with observed lifetimes > 1 ns and a fourfold increase in electroluminescence. They have also utilized picosecond laser spectroscopy to study the formation yield of emissive excitons in the polymer PPVs with different morphology. They have found that increasing polymer chain separation would greatly increases the luminescent efficiency due to avoiding the interchain excitons (exciplexes). Clarification of the nature of photophysics of conjugated polymers suggests avenues for improvement in fabrication of emissive polymers and electroluminescent polymers devices.

Water rocket - Electrolysis propulsion and fuel cell power
Water Rocket is the collective name for an integrated set of technologies that offer new options for spacecraft propulsion, power, energy storage, and structure. Low pressure water stored on the spacecraft is electrolyzed to generate, separate, and pressurize gaseous hydrogen and oxygen. These gases, stored in lightweight pressure tanks, can be burned to generate thrust or recombined to produce electric power. As a rocket propulsion system, Water Rocket provides the highest feasible chemical specific impulse (-400 seconds). Even higher specific impulse propulsion can be achieved by combining Water Rocket with other advanced propulsion technologies, such as arcjet or electric thrusters. With innovative pressure tank technology, Water Rocket's specific energy [Wh/kg] can exceed that of the best foreseeable batteries by an order of magnitude, and the tanks can often serve as vehicle structural elements. For pulsed power applications, Water Rocket propellants can be used to drive very high power density generators, such as MHD devices or detonation-driven pulse generators. A space vehicle using Water Rocket propulsion can be totally inert and non-hazardous during assembly and launch. These features are particularly important for the timely development and flight qualification of new classes of spacecraft, such as microsats, nanosats, and refuelable spacecraft.

Improving reservoir conformance using gelled polymer systems. Eleventh quarterly report, April 1, 1995--June 30, 1995
The general objectives are to (1) to identify and develop gelled polymer systems which have potential to improve reservoir conformance of fluid displacement processes, (2) to determine the performance of these systems in bulk and in porous media, and (3) to develop methods to predict the capability of these systems to recover oil from petroleum reservoirs. This work focuses on three types of gel systems -- an aqueous polysaccharide (KUSP1) system that gels as a function of pH, the chromium(III)-polyacrylamide system and the aluminum citrate-polyacrylamide system. Laboratory research is directed at the fundamental understanding of the physics and chemistry of the gelation process in bulk form and in porous media. This knowledge will be used to develop conceptual and mathematical models of the gelation process. Mathematical models will then be extended to predict the performance of gelled polymer treatments in oil reservoirs. Technical progress is described for the following tasks: physical and chemical characterization of gel systems; mechanisms of in situ gelation; and mathematical modelling of the gel systems.

Design of a substrate heater for calcium hydroxyapatite coating by pulsed laser ablation
Calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) is the main chemical constituent of bone. When replacement hip joints are coated with this chemical, the body may be more likely to accept the artificial joint, forming new bone that bonds the joint to the original leg bone. HA deposited by laser ablation in vacuum adheres to the substrate better at high temperatures of up to 700 C. This heater should be capable of uniformly heating to 700 C a silicon disk 150 mm in diameter. The heater consists of two wire heating coils brazed into a disk of stainless steel, with tantalum shields on top and at the sides of the heater to minimize radiation loss. Three spring-rotation clamps at the bottom of the heater hold the substrate disk in place. This report describes the heater and how it was developed, including design evolution and thermal modeling. Also, detailed information about parts is discussed.

Capacitive, deionization with carbon aerogel electrodes: Carbonate, sulfate, and phosphate
A process for the capacitive deionization (CDI) of water with a stack of carbon aerogel electrodes has been developed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Unlike ion exchange, one of the more conventional deionization processes, no chemicals are required for regeneration of the system. Electricity is used instead. Water with various anions and cations is pumped through the electrochemical cell. After polarization, ions are electrostatically removed from the water and held in the electric double layers formed at the surfaces of electrodes. The water leaving the cell is purified, as desired. The effects of cell voltage on the electrosorption capacities for Na{sub 2}SO{sub 4}, Na{sub 3}PO{sub 4}, and Na{sub 2}CO{sub 3} have been investigated and are reported here. Results for NaCl and NaNO{sub 3} have been reported previously. Possible applications for CDI are as a replacement for ion exchange processes which remove heavy metals and radioisotopes from process and waste water in various industries, as well as to remove inorganic ions from feedwater for fossil and nuclear power plants.

Hanford Tanks Initiative alternate retrieval system demonstrations - final report of testing performed by Grey Pilgrim LLC
A waste retrieval system has been defined to provide a safe and cost-effective solution to the Hanford Tanks Initiative. This system consists of the EMMA robotic manipulator (by GreyPilgrim LLC) and the lightweight Scarifier (by Waterjet Technology, Inc.) powered by a 36-kpsi Jet-Edge diesel powered high pressure pumping system. For demonstration and testing purposes, an air conveyance system was utilized to remove the waste from the simulated tank floor. The EMMA long reach manipulator utilized for this demonstration was 33 feet long. It consisted of 4 hydraulically controlled stages of varying lengths and coupling configurations. T

Glass results for the can-in-canister demonstration canister S00144
During the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Proficiency Runs, two test canisters containing small cans of surrogate plutonium glass were filled with glass. One of the test canisters contained a rack with eight small cans and one contained a rack with twenty small cans. The canister with eight small cans was discussed in another report.1 The canister with twenty small cans was sectioned by the Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) and samples of the glass were removed for analysis. This report is a summary of the results of the glass testing of the DWPF canister (S00144) which contained a rack with twenty small cans of surrogate plutonium glass. Significant results of the demonstration with the DWPF canister containing the twenty cans of surrogate plutonium glass are listed.

Program status 3. quarter -- FY 1990: Confinement systems programs
Highlights of the DIII-D Research Operations task are: completed five weeks tokamak operations; initiated summer vent; achievement of 10.7% beta; carried out first dimensionless transport scaling experiment; completed IBW program; demonstrated divertor heat reduction with gas puffing; field task proposals presented to OFE; presentation of DIII-D program to FPAC; made presentation to Admiral Watkins; and SAN safety review. Summaries are given on research programs, operations, program development, hardware development, operations support and collaborative efforts. Brief summaries of progress on the International Cooperation task include: TORE SUPRA, ASDEX, JFT-2M, and JET. Funding for work on CIT physics was received this quarter. Several physics R and D planning tasks were initiated. Earlier in FY90, a poloidal field coil shaping system (PFC) was found for DIGNITOR. This quarter more detailed analysis has been done to optimize the design of the PFC system.

Isobutanol-methanol mixtures from synthesis gas. Quarterly technical progress report, April 1, 1995--June 30, 1995
Three types of catalytic materials for alcohol coupling and isobutanol synthesis reactions have been prepared and characterized by BET surface area and x-ray diffraction methods. The materials consist of (1) modified low-temperature methanol synthesis catalysts and their constitutive components, (2) high temperature isobutanol synthesis catalysts consisting of Nb-Zn-Zr mixed oxides promoted with Cu, and (3) high surface area basic oxides prepared from hydrotalcite precursors and active in alcohol coupling reactions. Mechanistic and kinetic studies of methanol and ethanol coupling reactions using labeled compounds have shown that the reaction proceeds via an intermediate dehydrogenation reaction that form aldehydic intermediates. Ethanol is much more reactive than methanol because it forms a more thermodynamically stable acetaldehyde intermediate with kinetically available aldol condensation pathways for the formation of higher oxygenates. The presence of Cs in this catalysts decreases dehydrogenation rates but prevents the decomposition of methanol and ethanol to CO and H{sub 2}.
