Evaluation of Centrifugal Compressor Performance With Water Injection

The effects of water injection on a compressor are presented. To determine the effects of varying water-air ratio, the compressor was operated at a constant equivalent impeller speed over a range of water-air ratios and weight flows. Operation over a range of weight flows at one water-air ratio and two inlet air temperatures was carried out to obtain an indication of the effects of varying inlet air temperature. Beyond a water-air ratio of 0.03 there was no increase in maximum air-weight flow, a negligible rise in peak total-pressure ratio, and a decrease in peak adiabatic efficiency. An increase in inlet air temperature resulted in an increase in the magnitude of evaporation. An analysis of data indicated that the magnitude of evaporation within the compressor impeller was small.

Effects of humidity during fabrication on some physical properties of glass-fabric unsaturated-polyester laminates

Effects of humidity during fabric conditioning and during fabrication upon some physical properties of laminates prepared with glass fabric and an unsaturated polyester resin were investigated. Tests on these laminates included the measurement of flexural strength on the diagonal, both dry and after 7 days' immersion in water, specific gravity, resin content, percentage of voids, and total light transmission. Some data were also taken on lengthwise flexural strength.

These data represent the performance of the final control configuration developed after an investigation of the engine transient behavior in the NACA altitude wind tunnel. Oscillograph traces of controlled accelerations (throttle bursts), controlled decelerations (throttle chops), and controlled altitude starts are presented."

Summary of Low-Lift Drag and Directional Stability Data from Rocket Models of the Douglas XF4D-1 Airplane with and without External Stores and Rocket Packets at Mach Numbers from 0.8 to 1.38: TED No. NACA DE-349

At the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Department of the Navy, an investigation at transonic and low supersonic speeds of the drag and longitudinal trim characteristics of the Douglas XF4D-1 airplane is being conducted by the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Division. The Douglas XF4D-1 is a jet-propelled, low-aspect-ratio, swept-wing, tailless, interceptor-type airplane designed to fly at low supersonic speeds. As a part of this investigation, flight tests were made using rocket- propelled 1/10- scale models to determine the effect of the addition of 10 external stores and rocket packets on the drag at low lift coefficients. In addition to these data, some qualitative values of the directional stability parameter C(sub n beta) and duct total-pressure recovery are also presented.

Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data and the chordwise distribution of static pressure at seven spanwise stations are presented for specified Mach and Reynolds numbers. In order to determine the effects of camber and twist, the force, moment, and pressure data are compared with the data for an uncambered and untwisted wing of the same plan form.

On average, the effectiveness of the production combustor was only 36 percent for the foreign objects introduced in the tests; that is, 64 percent of the objects penetrated the combustor. Memorandum presenting the viscosities of slurries containing 50 to 65 percent by weight of boron in JP-5 fuel at temperatures from 30 to 80 degrees Celsius and of slurries containing 50 percent by weight of magnesium in JP-5 fuel from -40 to 80 degrees Celsius. Plastic viscosities of the boron slurries decreased consistently with an increase in temperature. Results regarding boron slurries and magnesium slurries are provided.

Report of the special study group

The special study group was activated by a charter letter from Sub-Section Managers of Pile Technology on June 20, 1956. The principal objectives were: to collect the information which is presently available for new reactor design and to determine what information should be developed; to make a guess at pile variables; and to point out development programs which must be pursued to achieve a detailed design start in two years. The study was restricted to graphite moderated reactors with H{sub 2}0, D{sub 2}0, and organic coolants. The program was to determine technical feasibility only and detailed economic considerations were not to be included. This report presents the conclusions of the group and some of the reasoning behind these conclusions.

The kinetics of the gamma deg C was con- beta deg C was con- alpha , beta deg C was con- gamma , and alpha deg C was con- beta deg C was con- gamma transformations were determined with a fiuid displacement technique. The rates of formation of the alpha and beta phases from the gamma phase were determined after gamma heat treating and allowing a sample to traasform isothermally in the alpha and beta ramges. Isothermal reaction curves were obtained from 160 C to -78C. The time-temperature-transformation curve of the gamma deg C was con- beta deg C was con- alpha transformation was plotted. The effect of the gamma heat treating time and temperature on the rate of transformation was examined. Isothermal reaction curves and time-temperature- transformation curves of the beta deg C was con- gamma , and alpha deg C was con- beta deg C was con- gamma transformations were plotted. Photomicrographs of specimens having transformed from the gamma range at different rates of transformation are presented. (auth)
