The technology for producing high fields in large superconducting magnets has increased greatly in recent years, but must increase still more in the future. In this paper, we examine the present state of the art vis-a-vis the needs of a next-generation fusion machine and outline a program to provide for those needs. We also highlight recent developments that suggest the program goals are within reach.

A process-oriented approach is described for encouraging community level energy conservation and planning programs. The approach is designed to augment existing energy programs by focusing on the major barriers to changing current energy-related behavior and attitudes. A variety of concepts, tools and techniques which can be used to overcome these barriers are described. Suggestions are offered on how to design community energy campaign based on the concepts, tools and techniques described. Some brief case studies are provided as examples. (LEW)

Summaries and updates of sixteen technical reports issued on this project are included. They cover: in depth analyses of the Federal land management-related problems present at major target prospect KGRA's throughout the Pacific Rim States; financial incentives; transmission line access; substantive environmental requirements in air, water, and solid wastes; water law; and the geothermal-impacting activities of the legislative and regulatory agencies of the State of California. Airborne temperature surveys were used to depict the small surface temperature differences related to heat flow anomalies. Zones with conductive heat flow differences of 45 +- 16 ..mu..cal/cm/sup 2/(s) had predawn surface temperature differences of 1.4 +- 0.3/sup 0/C. Airborne temperature surveys were coordinated with field temperature surveys at Long Valley, California, the site of a known geothermal resource area. The airborne temperature surveys recorded redundant, predawn temperatures at two wavelengths and at two elevations. Overall temperature corrections were determined by calibrating dry soil surface temperatures with thermistor probes. The probes measured air and soil temperatures within 2 cm of the surface, every twenty minutes, during the survey overflights.

It includes compiled statistics across six consecutive weeks, from the week ending May 31 to the week ending July 5, during 1985 and 1986 for broiler eggs set, chicks hatched, and chicks placed.

Five experimental runs were conducted as a part of the temperature and catalyst zoned concept. These experiments were conducted at 10.3 MPa (1500 psig), with the bottom zone reactor at 400/sup 0/C (752/sup 0/F), LHST of 1.9 h, with 20% (wt) of the catalyst in the top zone and utilizing a variable temperature in the top zone 400 to 500/sup 0/C (752 to 932/sup 0/F). Excessive reactor plugging occurred when the top zone was operated at 500/sup 0/C (932/sup 0/F). This suggests an upper limit when utilizing the feedstock of 15% (wt) mixture of SRC in a coal liquefaction process solvent, and with a commercial grade catalyst, Armak KF-153-S, a Ni-Mo type. All temperature zoning combinations showed a loss in catalyst activation over the experimental run durations of 72 h. Activity loss was rapid in the first 30 to 40 h and gradual thereafter. This activity loss was caused by carbonaceous material and metals deposition. Increasing the top zone temperature from 400 (752/sup 0/F) to 450/sup 0/C (842/sup 0/F) provided a beneficial effect on HDN and HDM activity.
