Processes of energy deposition by heavy particle impact. Technical report No. 2

Experimental studies of the Li/sup +/ + He interaction have been extended to smaller internuclear separations to clarify a discrepancy between experiment and theory in the elastic cross sections and to observe and measure cross sections for inelastic excitation. For R less than or equal to 0.5 a/sub 0/ the elastic scattering differential cross section is observed to droop far below that expected from a single-state interaction based on ab initio ground-state potentials. In this same region of R both one- and two-electron excitations of He are observed to be strongly excited, and cross sections were measured for each of them. The lowest inelastic channel is an electron-capture state, which is observed indirectly to be strongly populated also. A diabatic correlation diagram is constructed that exhibits the basic interactions responsible for the excitation.

Data characterization and compression. [Discussion of Prony's method]

The extraction of information from measured or computed data is all-pervasive; to gain the most value from extracted information, it must often be transformed from one type of data into another, a process that can only preserve or lose information. An information-transformation process based upon Prony's method was found to be increasingly useful for application to electromagnetic-type problems in particular and a growing variety of physical problems in general. This procedure allows the coefficients and exponents (or parameters) of an exponential series to be derived from a sequence of its sampled values. Two basic issues are associated with Prony processing: determination of the status of the input data and application of the procedure as effectively as possible to maximize the information content of the output. The possible uses of the Prony method as an information on-transformation process are discussed; the insight gained from this viewpoint concerning the information content of data is emphasized. Waveform and spectrum characterization, data compression, and inversion of pattern data are considered briefly as applications. 8 figures, 3 tables. (RWR)

Fabrication of uranium carbide/beryllium carbide/graphite experimental-fuel-element specimens

A method has been developed for fabricating uranium carbide/beryllium carbide/graphite fuel-element specimens for reactor-core-meltdown studies. The method involves milling and blending the raw materials and densifying the resulting blend by conventional graphite-die hot-pressing techniques. It can be used to fabricate specimens with good physical integrity and material dispersion, with densities of greater than 90% of the theoretical density, and with a uranium carbide particle size of less than 10 ..mu..m.

This report presents the conceptual design and preliminary feasibility assessment for the hybrid blanket and power conversion system of the Mirror Hybrid Fusion-Fission Reactor. Existing gas-cooled fission reactor technology is directly applicable to the Mirror Hybrid Reactor. There are a number of aspects of the present conceptual design that require further design and analysis effort. The blanket and power conversion system operating parameters have not been optimized. The method of supporting the blanket modules and the interface between these modules and the primary loop helium ducting will require further design work. The means of support and containment of the primary loop components must be studied. Nevertheless, in general, the conceptual design appears quite feasible.

Geothermal field tests: heat exchanger evaluation

Results of the heat exchanger tests conducted on a scale model of a heat exchanger that has been designed and fabricated for the Geothermal Test Facility show that this exchanger will lose 60% of its heat transfer capability and fall below design requirements after 92 hours of operation. When the test exchanger was clean and operating as close as possible to design conditions, its overall heat transfer coefficient was 426 BTU/hr-ft/sup 2/ - /sup 0/f. when calculating in the fouling factor of .0035 this gave a design coefficient of 171 BTU/hr-ft/sup 2/ - /sup 0/f which was reached after less than four days of steady state operation. Thermal shocking of the test heat exchanger once each hour while the exchanger was operating at design conditions had no effect on scale removal or heat transfer. Results of tube cleaning showed that chemical treatment with 30% hydrochloric acid followed by a high pressure water jet (6000 psig), was effective in removing scale from tubes contacted with geothermal brine. After cleaning, the tubes were examined and some pitting was observed throughout the length of one tube.

Devices for launching 0. 1-g projectiles to 150 km/s or more to initiate fusion. Part 2. Railgun accelerators

The possibility of using a railgun accelerator to launch 0.1-g projectiles to hypervelocities (150 km/s or more) to initiate thermonuclear fusion is studied. The analysis revealed that a railgun with a plasma-arc armature is a viable approach to the goal. When calculating the railgun's probable performance, it was discovered that this launch system might possibly be designed to avoid adverse effects from boundary layer drag. An appendix provided by A.C. Buckingham summarizes his calculations that predict the amount of erosive drag between projectile and rail. Finally, it was found that certain properties of railgun and projectile materials can impose operational limits. Using these limits, single- and multistage accelerators were designed. Within such limits, a railgun could accelerate a 0.1-g projectile to hypervelocities.

This system handles the more than 3000 control elements and 1000 data acquisition units in a severe high-voltage, high-current environment. The control system design gives one a flexible and reliable configuration to meet the development milestones for Shiva within critical time limits.

Evaluation of selected chemical processes for production of low-cost silicon. Third quarterly progress report, April 1, 1976--June 30, 1976

Based on the decision to concentrate on the fluidized-bed reduction of silicon tetrachloride as a candidate process for production of low-cost solar-grade silicon, work during the current quarter was directed toward: (1) evaluation of the economic effects of operating at Zn/SiCl/sub 4/ feed ratios other than the stoichiometric 2/1; (2) design, construction, and exploratory operation of the ''miniplant'' designed to ultimately yield over 200 g hr/sup -1/ silicon for runs of 4 to 6 hr duration. It was concluded that no significant economic advantages exist in operating at Zn/SiCl/sub 4/ ratios on either side of the stoichiometric 2/1. Further, if advantages in reaction kinetics, or in product form or quality can be obtained by off-stoichiometry operation, these advantages might be obtained at only a modest increase in product cost. During the current quarter, design criteria for the miniplant were established, equipment was designed and constructed, and a number of shakedown runs were made which led to equipment modifications for improved operability.
