Experimental Fabrication of a Lightweight Control Rod (open access)

Experimental Fabrication of a Lightweight Control Rod

Abstract: "The possibility of fabricating a lightweight control rod from one of several high cross-section materials was investigated. The major effort was directed toward the development of a titanium-clad rod containing a composite core of 25 weight per cent Gd2O3 in a matrix of titanium. Experimentation on both subscale and full-scale control-rod cores showed that the fabricating behavior of the two was not analogous. To roll the full-scale core successfully, it was necessary to lower the oxide content to 17 weight per cent. Subscale investigations were also carried out on titanium-cadmium, titanium-lanthanum, and titanium-gadolinium alloys."

Analysis of V-g records from the Grumman F8F-2 airplane (open access)

Analysis of V-g records from the Grumman F8F-2 airplane

From Introduction: "In the present paper, which supplements reference 1, V-g records obtained from F8F-2 airplanes in 1949 are analyzed statistically to determine the frequency of experiencing large values of normal load factor and airspeed. These results are compared with the results from the F8F-1 airplane."

Some effects of body cross-sectional shape, including sunken-canopy design, on drag as shown by rocket-powered-model tests at Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.5 (open access)

Some effects of body cross-sectional shape, including sunken-canopy design, on drag as shown by rocket-powered-model tests at Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.5

Report presenting free-flight tests made with four fin-stabilized bodies of fineness ratio 8.91 to determine the effect of body cross-sectional shape on body drag at a range of Mach and Reynolds numbers. Results regarding the curve of drag coefficients, drag on the nose and body, and body pressure drag are provided.

Evaluation of Military Individual and Collective Protection Devices and Clothing (open access)

Evaluation of Military Individual and Collective Protection Devices and Clothing

Under conditions resulting from surface and underground detonations of atomic bombs, tests were conducted on Chemical Corps impregnated and unimpregnated protective clothing, Individual Protective Mask M9A1 with M11 Canister, Tank Collective Protector E26 and E22, and Protective Ointment M5. Both impregnated and unimpregnated clothing were capable of preventing contact between the skin and radioactive dusts. Unimpregnated clothing demonstrated better contanmination-decontamination characteristics, but the secondary radiation from all clothing was negligible. The protective cover was effective in preventing contamination of clothing. The M9A1 mask with M11 canister furnished complete protection against inhalation of radioactive dust. The flltering efficiencies of the E26 tank collective protectors were found to be very high, and no deficiencies were found in the unit. The filtering efficiencies of the E22 tank collective protectors were also high. Panels coated with M5 ointment were found to be much more highly contaminated than bare panels. (auth)

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works (open access)

Accumulation of Radioactivity in Columbia River Fish in the Vicinity of the Hanford Works

Abstract: The data obtained from the radioassay of fish collected in vicinity of the Hanford Works between April, 1948 and June, 1950 are presented. Most of the radioactivity in the fish resulted from the concentration of p32 in the scales, bone, and certain visceral organs. The level of activity density in the fish was influenced by size, feeding habits and metabolic rate in addition to the activity density of the water. Changes in operation of nuclear reactors have resulted in progressive increases in activity densities of fish from one year to the next. The levels of radioactivity are not sufficiently high to be hazardous to either the fish or persons eating them.
