Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of leading-edge radius and profile thickness on the oscillatory lateral stability derivatives for a series of delta wings with 60 degrees of leading-edge sweep. The wings were oscillated in yaw about their vertical axes. Results indicated that there were noticeable decreases in all the derivatives due to increase in leading-edge radius at angles of attack above approximately 12 degrees.

Report presenting a study in which the effective flow area of a convergent exhaust nozzle was reduced by injecting a high-pressure secondary jet into the nozzle near the exit. Analytical expressions relating the performance with significant design and operating variables were developed. Some of the configurations, altered to operate as jet deflectors, produced significant values of side force but also operated at reduced effective flow area.

Effects of fabrication-type roughness on turbulent skin friction at supersonic speeds

Report presenting an investigation of the effects of fabrication-type surface roughness on turbulent skin-friction drag at supersonic speeds. It was found that fabrication of the thin-skin constructions could be done sufficiently well in practice so as to cause no increase in drag over the smooth body; however, the juncture-type roughnesses produced significant increases in drag as compared with the smooth body. Results indicated that increasing the unit Reynolds number has a detrimental effect and increased the Mach number has a powerful alleviating effect on drag due to surface roughness.

Report presenting a flight investigation to determine the acceptability of a small side-located controller which is used as the primary airplane controller in an irreversible hydraulic-power control system. Pilot opinion was obtained concerning the acceptability of the controller while performing lateral and longitudinal maneuvers in a jet-trainer airplane at cruising-flight conditions. Results indicated that the location of the controller is consistent with pilot comfort and the airplane is flyable with the side-located controller.
