Review of S and P 1963, the Pebble Bed Reactor (open access)

Review of S and P 1963, the Pebble Bed Reactor

Sanderson and Perter, under contract to the AEC, prepared a design feasibility study for a pebble-bed reactor steam power plant of 125-Mw(e) capacity. The design problems, economic considerations, and required research and development programs were reviewed by ORNL. It is concluded that the design shows promise of being economically competitive if the following conditions are met: (1) U/sup 233/ could be made available for use as a burner rather than as a breeder; (2) the contamination problems within the reactor can be successfully handled in a manner which would permit direct maintenancc on the equipment external to the core; and (3) the anticipated lifetime of the fuei ls snrffncneutly long to justify the cost assumptions of the Sanderson and Perter design. Evaluation of Some Aerodynamic Controls for a Low Aspect Ratio Missile (open access)

Evaluation of Some Aerodynamic Controls for a Low Aspect Ratio Missile

"Results of a static stability controls investigation carried out with a very low-aspect-ratio delta-winged missile are presented. Control effectiveness comparisons are made for tail, canard, and nose control configurations with respect to angle of attack, angle of bank, and Mach number. Trim capabilities of the various configurations are also presented" (p. 1).

Heat-Transfer Measurements on a Concave Hemispherical Nose Shape With Unsteady-Flow Effects at Mach Numbers of 1.98 and 4.95 (open access)

Heat-Transfer Measurements on a Concave Hemispherical Nose Shape With Unsteady-Flow Effects at Mach Numbers of 1.98 and 4.95

Memorandum presenting heat-transfer rates and pressure fluctuations at Mach numbers of 1.98 and 4.95 measured at the stagnation point of a concave hemisphere for a range of Reynolds numbers based on free-stream conditions and model diameter. Results regarding heat-transfer characteristics, heat-transfer data, and schileren photographs and stagnation point pressure measurements are provided.

Determination of Silver, Cadmium, Indium, and Tin in Silver-Base Alloys (open access)

Determination of Silver, Cadmium, Indium, and Tin in Silver-Base Alloys

A procedure has been developed for the determination of silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in an alloy composed of these metals. The sample sample is dissolved in a mixture of nitric and fluoboric acids, after which the silver is determined gravimetrically as the chloride. The cadmium and indium are then determined polarographically in a potassium iodide solution, and the tin is determined polargraphically in an ammonium chloride - hydrochloric acid supporting medium.

Simulator Investigation of Command Reaction Controls (open access)

Simulator Investigation of Command Reaction Controls

Memorandum presenting an investigation of reaction controls that command velocity and attitude that compares them to the controls that command acceleration. Proportional acceleration reaction controls were found to be satisfactory over a much wide range of control effectiveness than were the on-off acceleration controls. The velocity and attitude controls were found to be superior to either of the acceleration controls.
