There were no cases of unusual blistering of slugs being followed under Production Tests. Two normal production tubes were borescoped following trouble with discharge. In Tube 3188-D a distorted slug became stuck in the region of sharp curvature near the inner end of the rear gun barrel; this is the first time this phenomenon has occurred. Examination of irradiated slugs of rolled metal after normal exposure indicates that rolled material has no particular advantages over extruded material from the standpoint of blistering. However, no extensively blistered pieces were found in either the rolled metal are being held for more extended exposure. Inspection of a large number of Van Stone flanges in the D and F Piles has confirmed that the inlet flanges are in generally good condition but that the rear Van Stone flanges of tubes in the 0.140-inch orifice sone of both piles were badly corroded and generally contained deep pits that extended about half-way through the flange. The Van Stone test units are to be installed unshielded in the risor room at the rear of the D Pile, since the shielding required in the X Sample Room exceeded the allowable floor loading. Recent experimental observations indicate that solid …

100-B Area flow analysis (open access)

100-B Area flow analysis

Results of experimental programs indicate that it might be desirable in the future to modify the existing reactors by replacing the aluminum process tubes with tubes made of a zirconium alloy. The zirconium tubes would be more corrosion resistant than the aluminum ones and would also be stronger at higher temperatures. These new tubes would have the same outer diameter as the present tubes (for ease of handling and in order to provide adequate graphite cooling) but would have a thinner wall (since zirconium alloy is both stronger and more expensive than aluminum). The inner diameter of the new tubes would, therefore, be greater than in the present tubes. In addition to the tube change, it might also be desirable to replace the existing solid fuel elements with those known as ``I&E`` alements. These pieces would be similar to the present elements except for a longitudinal hole which would allow the passage of cooling vater through the center. The element would then be Internally and Externally cooled, and would have a more uniform temperature distribution. The combination of the larger tube inside diameter and the central hole in the fuel element would result in reduced friction loss for the reactor …

100% DD Energy Model Update (open access)

100% DD Energy Model Update

The Miami Science Museum energy model has been used during DD to test the building’s potential for energy savings as measured by ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Appendix G. This standard compares the designed building’s yearly energy cost with that of a code-compliant building. The building is currently on track show 20% or better improvement over the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Appendix G baseline; this performance would ensure minimum compliance with both LEED 2.2 and current Florida Energy Code, which both reference a less strict version of ASHRAE 90.1. In addition to being an exercise in energy code compliance, the energy model has been used as a design tool to show the relative performance benefit of individual energy conservation measures (ECMs). These ECMs are areas where the design team has improved upon code-minimum design paths to improve the energy performance of the building. By adding ECMs one a time to a code-compliant baseline building, the current analysis identifies which ECMs are most effective in helping the building meet its energy performance goals.

A 100-kV, 2-kA, 2.5-{micro}S Pulser for Developing and Calibrating Long-Pulse Diagnostics (open access)

A 100-kV, 2-kA, 2.5-{micro}S Pulser for Developing and Calibrating Long-Pulse Diagnostics

The development of voltage and current probes for measuring an electron beam's current and position associated with several microsecond-long pulses from advanced Linear Induction Accelerators requires a precision pulser that can deliver both high voltages and high currents to a diagnostics Test Line. Seven-stage, type-E PFNs have been utilized in both a transformer and 4-stage Marx (plus/minus) configuration. The resulting 50-ohm pulser delivers to the Test Line a repeatable 100 kV, ca. 2 {micro}s flat-top ({+-} 1%), 2.5 {micro}s FWHM pulse with a rise time of 175 ns and 500 ns for the transformer and Marx options, respectively. Methods of reducing the rise time for both options are discussed and modeled. The coaxial Test Line is insulated at up to two atmospheres with SF{sub 6} and includes two transition regions to hold and test different diameter beam current and position monitors (BPMs). The center conductor incorporates both translation and tip/tilt with an accuracy of 100 {micro}m. Finally, the line is terminated in a matched radial resistor that provides a planar region at fields up to 40 kV/cm for the testing of voltage probes. Both the transformer and Marx options are modeled and compared to experimental results.
