Ferrules seals

A device is provided for sealing an inner tube and an outer tube without excessively deforming the tubes. The device includes two ferrules which cooperate to form a vacuum-tight seal between the inner tube and outer tube and having mating surfaces such that overtightening is not possible.

Free-electron laser using rf-coupled accelerating and decelerating structures

A free electron laser and free electron laser amplifier using beam transport devices for guiding an electron beam to a wiggler of a free electron laser and returning the electron beam to decelerating cavities disposed adjacent to the accelerating cavities of the free electron laser. Rf energy is extracted from the electron beam after it emerges from the wiggler by means of the decelerating cavities which are closely coupled to the accelerating cavities, or by means of a second bore within a single set of cavities. Rf energy extracted from the decelerated electron beam is used to supplement energy provided by an external source, such as a klystron, to thereby enhance overall efficiency of the system.

Discrete-event simulation of nuclear-waste transport in geologic sites subject to disruptive events. Final report

This report outlines a methodology to study the effects of disruptive events on nuclear waste material in stable geologic sites. The methodology is based upon developing a discrete events model that can be simulated on the computer. This methodology allows a natural development of simulation models that use computer resources in an efficient manner. Accurate modeling in this area depends in large part upon accurate modeling of ion transport behavior in the storage media. Unfortunately, developments in this area are not at a stage where there is any consensus on proper models for such transport. Consequently, our work is directed primarily towards showing how disruptive events can be properly incorporated in such a model, rather than as a predictive tool at this stage. When and if proper geologic parameters can be determined, then it would be possible to use this as a predictive model. Assumptions and their bases are discussed, and the mathematical and computer model are described.

High-temperature electrically conductive ceramic and method for making same

It is the primary objective or aim of the present invention to provide an electrically conductive composition for the fabrication of susceptors useful for induction melting of uranium and uranium alloys and to also provide such a composition for forming crucibles and other containment vessels utilized to contain uranium at elevated temperatures. This composition does not appear to interact with molten uranium, since there is no significant reaction between the compositional consituents of the susceptor or containment vessel and the confined uranium. This objective is achieved by utilizing a sintered ceramic composition which consists essentially of about 13-67 vol. % of a refractory metal carbide and a nonconductive oxide selected from a group consisting of zirconium oxide, calcium aluminate, yttria, and combinations thereof.

Statistical vs valence neutron neutron capture in /sup 98/Mo

It has often been reported that, in mass regions corresponding to peaks in the neutron strength function, nonstatistical mechanisms contribute a significant or even major portion of the average radiation width in the beginning of the resonance region. This could severely limit the possibility of calculating caputure cross sections for targets where experimental data are lacking, because such direct effects are sensitive to the detailed nuclear level structure in the daughter nucleus. The reaction /sup 98/Mo+n was examined for neutrons in the 1 keV to 3 MeV energy range, because this case is often cited as one of the clearest examples of valence neutron capture effects. Preliminary calculations are presented which suggest that these nonstatistical effects rapidly disappear when measurements from even a small number of resonances are averaged.

A partial wave analysis of high statistics data collected by AGS Experiment No. 771 in reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup +/ anti K/sub S/..pi../sup -/ + n shows evidence for a 1/sup + +/ and a 0/sup - +/ state in the 1280 MeV region, a 0/sup - +/ state in the 1420 MeV region and a 1/sup + +/ state in the 1500 MeV region. Preliminary data from reaction K/sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup +/ anti K/sub S/..pi../sup -/ + X are presented.

Considerations for application of Si(Li) detectors in analyses of sub-keV, ion-induced x rays

Spectroscopy of ion-induced x rays is commonly performed using lithium-drifted, silicon detectors, Si(Li), with beryllium windows. Strong absorption of x rays with energies below 1 keV occurs in even the thinnest commercially available beryllium windows and precludes useful analysis of sub-keV x rays. Access to the sub-keV x ray region can be achieved using windowless (WL) and ultra-thin-windowed (UTW) Si(Li) detectors. These detectors have been shown to be useful for spectroscopy of x rays with energies above approximately 200 eV. The properties of such detectors are reviewed with regard to analysis of ion-induced x rays. In particular, considerations of detection efficiency, output linearity, energy resolution, peak shapes, and vacuum requirements are presented. The use of ion excitation for determination of many detector properties serves to demonstrate the usefulness of WL and UTW detectors for the spectroscopy of sub-keV, ion-induced x rays. 23 refs., 4 figs.

Continued study of the parameterization of the El gamma-ray strength function

The parameterization of the magnitude and the energy dependence of the E1 gamma-ray strength function for the calculation of neutron- and proton-induced capture cross sections and capture gamma-ray spectra is investigated. The energy-dependent Breit-Wigner (EDBW) is reparameterized incorporating a more general expression for the Breit-Wigner line shape. Evaluation of the reparameterized E1 gamma-ray strength function is discussed. (WHK)

Nuclear target foil fabrication for the Romano Event

The Vacuum Processes Lab, of LLNL's M.E. Dept. - Material Fabrication Division, was requested to provide 250 coated Parylene target foils for a nuclear physics experiment titled the ROMANO Event. Due to the developmental nature of some of the fabrication procedures, approximately 400 coated foils were produced to satisfy the event's needs. The foils were used in the experiment as subkilovolt x-ray, narrow band pass filters, and wide band ultraviolet filters. This paper is divided into three sections describing: (1) nuclear target foil fabrication, (2) Parylene substrate preparation and production, and (3) foil and substrate inspections.

Calculations of photoabsorption by atoms using a linear response method

We have made extensive calculations of photoabsorption by all neutral atoms from hydrogen to lawrencium for photon energies up to one kilovolt. Our method was the relativistic time-dependent local density approximation with the usual configuration average for open shells. The most important collective effects are included through an induced field. Expected features such as resonant photoemission and autoionization are seen. Examples of the calculations will be shown. The computer program used is available from the Computer Physics Communications Program Library. 11 refs., 6 figs.
