A 2-MV multi-beam injector for heavy ion fusion

Construction of a sixteen beam (0.5 A per beam) injector for use in scaled heavy ion fusion experiments is underway at LBL. The machine was designed and partially constructed at LANL. The injector is designed to use carbon arc sources which will provide 25 mA/cm/sup 2/ of extractable current density. The plasma from the arcs is confined electrostatically from drifting into the ion gun before firing the extraction pulse. The acceleration column consists of a set of aperture lenses which both transport the beam and attenuate backstreaming electrons. The acceleration column is mounted inside a 28-inch diameter brazed alumina insulating module. The high voltage for the injector is provided by an inductively loaded and graded Marx generator which resides inside a pressure vessel filled with a 65 psig mixture of 30/percent/ SF/sub 6/ and 70/percent/ N/sub 2/. Data is presented showing the performance of single and multiple carbon arc sources. Measurements show that adequate current density is available. Emittance measurements and efforts to improve emittance and reproducibility are shown. Tests with a 5-tray section of the full 18 tray generator are described showing the evolution of the generator design. 5 refs., 3 figs.

3-D hybrid PIC code to model the tilt mode in FRCs

The results from QN3D are presented. QN3D is a 3-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell code designed to run efficiently on the Cray-2 Multiprocessor. The chief application has been to the tilt mode instability in FRCs. QN3D accepts as input, the magnetic field, the ion particle density and the ion temperature on a two-dimensional r-z grid. These quantities are interpolated to the rest of the cartesian grid under the assumption of azimuthal symmetry. The particles are initialized with random numbers chosen according to the particle distributions input from the equilibrium code. The runs done here used equilibria computed by EQV, a kinetic equilibrium code.

3-megajoule heavy-ion fusion driver

The initiation of inertial confinement fusion reactions with a heavy ion particle beam has been under intensive study since 1976, and the progress of this study is principally documented in the proceedings of annual workshops held by US National Laboratories. At this time a 3MJ, 150 TW, ion beam is a good choice to initiate microexplosions with energy gain of 100. The Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory has made systems studies based on a Linear Induction Accelerator to meet the beam requirements. The accelerator system, expected performance and cost, and technical problems to be addressed in the near future are discussed.

5. 8 GHz ophthalmic microwave applicator for treatment of choroidal melanoma

We report on the use of a 5.8 GHz microwave applicator to treat choroidal melanoma (Greene) in rabbits. The physical requirements needed to treat these intraocular tumors are quite different from those encountered elsewhere in the body. From a trans-scleral approach the penetration needed is minimal (5 to 10 mm.). The fibrous sclera is the only structure between the heat source and the tumor. The sclera has a relatively low water content when compared to tumor. This fact in addition to the frequency dependent interactions of tissue and electromagnetic radiation, results in an advantage to the use of the 5.8 GHz microwave device in treating intraocular malignancies.

Ablative fast pyrolysis of biomass in the entrained-flow cyclonic reactor at SERI

Progress with the entrained flow cyclonic reactor at SERI is detailed. Feedstocks successfully used include wood flour and fairly large sawdust. Preliminary results show that relatively complete vaporization of the biomass is realized and that the yields of tar or gas can be varied over quite a range with trends following first order kinetic concepts.

Abort kicker power supply systems at Fermilab

Over the past several years, Fermilab has been operating with a single turn proton abort system in both the superconducting Tevatron and the conventional Main Ring. The abort kicker power supply for this system discharges a lumped capacitance into the inductive magnet load, causing the beam to enter the abort channel. The characteristics of this current waveform are defined by the requirements of the machine operation. The standard fixed target running mode calls for 12 booster batches of beam which leaves a rotating gap in the beams of approx.1.8 ..mu..s. The current waveform is required to rise to 90% of I/sub max/ in this time to avoid beam loss from partially deflected beam. Aperture limitations in both the accelerator and the abort channel demand that the current in the magnets stays above this 90% I/sub max/ for the 21 ..mu..s needed to ensure all the beam has left the machine. The 25 mm displacement needed to cleanly enter the abort channel at 1 TeV corresponds to a maximum current in each of the 4 modules of approx.20 kA. Absorption spectrophotometric characterization of Sm(II), Sm(III), and Sm(II/III) bromides and Sm(III) oxybromide in the solid state

Absorption spectra obtained from SmBr/sub 3/, SmBr/sub 2/, and Sm0Br were used in identifying the samarium species in several mixed-valence Sm(II/III) compounds produced by H/sub 2/ reduction of SmBr/sub 3/. The nature of the absorption of Sm0Br made it possible to detect even traces of Sm0Br in the Sm bromides.

Acceleration to hypervelocities using minimum energy concepts

Experiments have begun at Los Alamos to assess the potential of using spheromaks to transfer energy from large, slow moving metal walls to much smaller, faster moving less massive walls so as to achieve hypervelocities in the 20 to 60 km/s range. A large plate transfers energy to the spheromak during a slow compression. The spheromak then releases this energy in a much shorter time to the small plate, accelerating it to much higher velocity. It has been estimated that velocity gains in excess of 4 (V/sub final/ ..-->.. 20 km/s) can be achieved in a practical single stage experiment.

Accelerator breeders: will they replace liquid metal fast breeders

Investigation of accelerator breeders at Brookhaven National Laboratory indicate that the AB-LWR fuel cycle is economically competitive with the LMFBR fuel cycle. The same can be said about the accelerator breeder-High Temperature Gas Reactor symbiosis. This system appears to be very competitive with the added real advantage of superior safety and proliferation resistance. This discussion would be incomplete if the real competitor to accelerator breeding was not mentioned, namely Fusion Hybrid Breeding (FHB). Fusion Hybrid Breeding is a nearer option than pure fusion, as the breakeven Q value requirements are much more modest. Fusion Hybrid Breeding, if successful and practical, has the potential for highly efficient fissile fuel breeding, leading to cheaper fuel. The system, however, has yet to be demonstrated scientifically and to be shown commercially feasible. This is in contrast with the AB system which is an extension of proven, state-of-the-art technology with implementation possible within twenty years. 25 references, 4 figures, 5 tables.

Accelerator research on MBE-4, an experimental multi-beam induction linac

The multiple beam accelerator MBE-4 is a device for research toward a heavy ion driver for inertial confinement fusion, based on the induction linac concept. Its main goal is proof of the principle of current amplification by acceleration and controlled self-similar beam pulse compression. Into the 16-m long device four beams, each with an initial current of 10 mA are injected from a Marx-driven diode at 200 keV. The current amplification is up to nine-fold, with a final beam energy of about 800 keV in the middle of the bunch. Now that all the apparatus' accelerator sections have been completed, installed and aligned, and its unaccelerated transport properties have been studied, our experimental research has reached the crucial phase of implementing appropriate accelerator schedules that approximate self-similar current-pulse compression. These schedules are established through a close interplay of computations using a one-dimensional simulation code and a manual empirical tuning procedure. In a first approach, with a rather vigorous schedule that uses most of the accelerator modules to their voltage limits, we have determined the limits of our capability for controlled pulse compression, mainly due to waveform shaping of the driving pulse-forming networks. Achromatic beam combiner and bend system for ILSE (Induction Linac System Experiment)

The lattice configuration of the beam combiner and bend system of the proposed Induction Linac System Experiment (ILSE) is described. These subsystems must transport high current ion beams with large momentum variations within a single pulse (..delta..P/P/sub 0/ less than or equal to +-.1), with minimal beam loss or emittance growth. Configurations which are achromatic through first order, including the effect of image fields have been developed. Calculations of the beam envelope and centroid motion are made with beam dynamics code HICURB, which includes strong space charge effects and chromatic effects through all orders. 5 refs., 5 figs.

Adiabatic supernova expansion into the circumstellar medium

We perform one dimensional numerical simulations with a Lagrangian hydrodynamics code of the adiabatic expansion of a supernova into the surrounding medium. The early expansion follows Chevalier's analytic self-similar solution until the reverse shock reaches the ejecta core. We follow the expansion as it evolves towards the adiabatic blast wave phase. Some memory of the earlier phases of expansion is retained in the interior even when the outer regions expand as a blast wave. We find the results are sensitive to the initial configuration of the ejecta and to the placement of gridpoints. 6 refs., 2 figs.

Adjoint sensitivity analysis of a thermal hydraulic system undergoing phase change due to boiling transition. [BWR]

Sensitivity analysis of practical problems can be performed systematically and very efficiently by using adjoint functions. In areas of interest to nuclear reactors, this efficiency has been amply demonstrated on several widely used codes for neutronics and/or thermal hydraulic calculations. Applications of the adjoint method of sensitivity analysis to models involving phase transitions, where non-differentiability occurs, do not seem to have been reported to date. The purpose of this paper is to report results from a successful adjoint sensitivity analysis of a space- and time-dependent system where phase transition occurs due to boiling. The specific model chosen for this analysis is a simplified but representative model of a BWR pump-trip-type accident. This model is of particular importance to BWR safety, since pump failure is one of the most limiting hypothetical accidents in BWR's. This model simulates an exponential flow decay of initially subcooled FREON-114 flowing through a heated channel and undergoing boiling transition.

The Advanced Light Source: A new 1. 5 GeV synchrotron radiation facility at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory

The Advanced Light Source (ALS), now under construction at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, is being planned as a national user facility for the production of high-brightness and partially coherent x-ray and ultraviolet synchrotron radiation. The ALS is based on a low-emittance electron storage ring optimized for operation at 1.5 GeV with insertion devices in 11 long straight sections and up to 48 bend-magnet ports. High-brightness photon beams, from less than 10 eV to more than 1 keV, will be produced by undulators, thereby providing many research opportunities in materials and surface science, biology, atomic physics and chemistry. Aging degradation of cast stainless steels: Effects on mechanical properties

A program is being conducted to investigate the significance of in-service embrittlement of cast duplex stainless steels under light-water operating conditions. Mechanical property data are presented from Charpy-impact, tensile, and J-R curve tests for several heats of cast stainless steel aged up to 10,000 h at 450, 400, 350, 320, and 290/sup 0/C. The results indicate that thermal aging increases the tensile strength and decreases the impact energy, J/sub IC/, and tearing modulus of the steels. Also, the ductile-to-brittle transition curve shifts to higher temperatures. The fracture toughness results are consistent with the Charpy-impact data, i.e., the relative reduction in J/sub IC/ is similar to the relative decrease in impact energy. The ferrite content and concentration of C in the steel have a strong effect on the overall process of low-temperature embrittlement. The low-carbon CF-3 steels are the most resistant and Mo-containing CF-8M steels are most susceptible to embrittlement. Weakening of the ferrite/austenite phase boundaries by carbide precipitates has a significant effect on the kinetics and extent of embrittlement of the high-carbon CF-8 and CF-8M steels, particularly after aging at temperatures greater than or equal to400/sup 0/C. Airborne and field-temperature surveys compared at Long Valley KGRA, California

An airborne predawn radiometric temperature survey was flown over the Long Valley KGRA. Radiometric temperatures were recorded at 10 to 12 ..mu..m and 4.5 to 5.5 ..mu..m. They were corrected to obtain true land-surface temperatures in agreement with field data. After accounting for thermal effects from surface features, there remained a thermal anomaly. The anomalous zone encompassed 2 km/sup 2/. It was a dry land area with a predawn surface temperature which averaged 1.4 +- 0.3/sup 0/C warmer than ambient. This area coincided with a thermal discharge zone where deep temperature gradients were 5 to 30 times normal. The predawn radiometric survey clarified and supplemented conclusions drawn from 6 to 30m deep field surveys. Heat from hydrothermal discharge was stored in a shallow aquifer and conducted to the surface.

Los Alamos Transuranic Waste Size Reduction Facility

The Los Alamos Transuranic (TRU) Waste Size Reduction Facility (SRF) is a production oriented prototype. The facility is operated to remotely cut and repackage TRU contaminated metallic wastes (e.g., glove boxes, ducting and pipes) for eventual disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The resulting flat sections are packaged into a tested Department of Transportation Type 7A metal container. To date, the facility has successfully processed stainless steel glove boxes (with and without lead shielding construction) and retention tanks. We have found that used glove boxes generate more cutting fumes than do unused glove boxes or metal plates - possibly due to deeply embedded chemical residues from years of service. Water used as a secondary fluid with the plasma arc cutting system significantly reduces visible fume generation during the cutting of used glove boxes and lead-lined glove boxes. 2 figs., 1 tab.

The all particle method: Coupled neutron, photon, electron, charged particle Monte Carlo calculations

At the present time a Monte Carlo transport computer code is being designed and implemented at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to include the transport of: neutrons, photons, electrons and light charged particles as well as the coupling between all species of particles, e.g., photon induced electron emission. Since this code is being designed to handle all particles this approach is called the ''All Particle Method''. The code is designed as a test bed code to include as many different methods as possible (e.g., electron single or multiple scattering) and will be data driven to minimize the number of methods and models ''hard wired'' into the code. This approach will allow changes in the Livermore nuclear and atomic data bases, used to described the interaction and production of particles, to be used to directly control the execution of the program. In addition this approach will allow the code to be used at various levels of complexity to balance computer running time against the accuracy requirements of specific applications. Alpha-spectroscopic techniques for field measurement of radon daughters

Alpha spectroscopic techniques have not often been used to measure radon daughter concentrations in field studies because the equipment required is bulky and expensive. With advances in integrated circuit technology, less expensive, portable instruments have been developed that now make it possible to use these techniques to measure the low concentrations of radon daughters typically found indoors. One of two procedures may be used, two-count or single-count, depending on whether precision of measurement or rapidity of measurement is the more important objective. We have analyzed the effectiveness of both procedures. The results show that the two-count method permits individual radon daughter concentrations to be measured at the low level of one picocurie per liter with a relative standard deviation of about 20% within a total measurement time of 40 minutes (assuming the product of detector efficiency and sampling flow rate is one liter per minute). With the single-count procedure, using the same assumption, potential alpha energy concentration can be estimated within a total measurement time of 11 minutes with less than 20% relative procedural error for common equilibrium conditions; the relative standard deviation is about 20% at 0.005 working level. Alternate fusion fuels workshop

The workshop was organized to focus on a specific confinement scheme: the tokamak. The workshop was divided into two parts: systems and physics. The topics discussed in the systems session were narrowly focused on systems and engineering considerations in the tokamak geometry. The workshop participants reviewed the status of system studies, trade-offs between d-t and d-d based reactors and engineering problems associated with the design of a high-temperature, high-field reactor utilizing advanced fuels. In the physics session issues were discussed dealing with high-beta stability, synchrotron losses and transport in alternate fuel systems. The agenda for the workshop is attached.

Amplitude and phase acoustic microscopy and its application to QNDE

The authors have two amplitude and phase measuring acoustic microscopes, one at low frequency (3--10 MHz) which is used for measurements in metals and composites, and the other operating at frequencies of up to 200 MHz which is used for higher resolution measurements. The added dimension of having phase information allows one to use image processing for a variety of applications. They have demonstrated the following applications with these two microscopes: inversion for reflectance function calculations, depth determination for delaminations in composite materials, slowness curve measurements of depth of trenches in aluminum samples (scaled problem of silicon trenches), and measurement of visco-elastic properties of thin surfactant films on a water surface.
