Aerosol behavior during sodium pool fires in a large vessel: CSTF tests AB1 and AB2
Two large-scale aerosol behavior tests, using sodium pool fires as the aerosol source, were performed in the Containment Systems Test Facility (CSTF). The tests were conducted to characterize the properties and behavior of sodium aerosol particles formed and aged in a large containment vessel. The 20-m high, 850-m/sup 3/ CSTF containment building in regard to parameters that affect agglomeration and gravitational settling. In both tests, sodium burned for one hour in a 4.38-m/sup 2/ pool, and the only difference between them was that steam was injected during the second test, simulating the release of water vapor from heated concrete.

Age-dependent radiosensitivity of mouse oocytes
It has been shown that there are three distinct phases of radiosensitivity in oocytes of prepubertal mice: a period of rapidly increasing sensitivity between 0 and 4 days of age; a period of consistent, high sensitivity between 5 and 18 days of age; and a period of decreasing sensitivity from 19 to at least 21 days of age. Two distinct phases have been demonstrated for the rate of population decline of the oocytes of primary follicles: an initial period of rapid loss from 0 to 4 days of age; and a period of much slower loss from 5 through 23 days of age. Correlations have been drawn between the first two phases of radiosensitivity and morphological changes in the oocyte, and between the third phase of radiosensitivity and endocrinological changes in the maturing animal. The reaction of oocytes to radiation has been separated into two categories: immediate death (within 24 hours); and delayed death (over the entire lifespan of the animal). (auth)

Air filtration enhancement using electronic techniques
Dielectrophoretic filtration experiments were conducted on glass, polyester, dacron, Teflon, wool, acrylic and polypropylene filter media. A polydispersed (sigma g = 2.0, ammd = 0.95 ..mu.. m) sodium chloride particle was used as a test aerosol. All materials exhibited significant increases in efficiency with increasing field strengths. Efficiencies of greater than 99 percent could be obtained from glass fiber mats using a 13 kV/cm electric field at 16.3 cm/s face velocity.

Air quality impacts due to construction of LWR waste management facilities
Air quality impacts of construction activities and induced housing growth as a result of construction activities were evaluated for four possible facilities in the LWR fuel cycle: a fuel reprocessing facility, fuel storage facility, fuel fabrication plant, and a nuclear power plant. Since the fuel reprocessing facility would require the largest labor force, the impacts of construction of that facility were evaluated in detail.

AIRWAY: a fortran computer program to estimate radiation dose commitments to man from the atmospheric release of radionuclides
The AIRWAY computer program was developed to estimate the radiation dose commitments accured by all the people affected by the atmospheric release of radionuclides from a nuclear facility. This computer program provides dose commitment estimates for people on the boundary of the facility, in the immediate vicinity (i.e., within 80 to 100 km) and in the portios of the world beyond the immediate vicinity which are affected by the release. The AIRWAY program considers dose commitments resulting from immersion in the atmosphere containing the released radionuclides, ingestion of contaminated food, inhalation of gaseous and suspended radioactivity, and exposure to ground deposits. The dose commitments for each of these pathways is explicitly calculated for each radionuclide released into the atmosphere and for each daughter of each released radionuclide. This is accomplished by calculating the air and ground concentrations of each daughter in each of the regions of interest using the release rate of the parent radionuclide. The AIRWAY computer program is considered to be a significant improvement over other programs in which the effect of daughter radionuclides must be approximated by separate releases.
