Development of an 8 kW wind turbine generator for residential type applications. Phase I: design and analysis. Volume II. Technical report

This Phase I summary report contains a description of the 8 kW wind energy conversion system developed by the United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) for the Department of Energy. The wind turbine employs the UTRC Bearingless Rotor Concept in conjunction with a passive pendulum control system which controls blade pitch for start-up, efficient power generation, and high-speed survivability. The report contains a summary of the experimental and analytical programs in support of design efforts. These supporting programs include materials tests, a wind tunnel program, and aeroelastic analyses to evaluate system stability. An estimate is also made of the projected manufacturing cost of the system if produced in quantity.

The Composite Bearingless Wind Turbine was developed at the United Technologies Research Center following many years of bearingless rotor research and development for helicopter applications. The current 8 kW contract was begun in October 1977 with delivery of the prototype scheduled for November 1979. The contract consists of two phases. Phase I encompasses the complete design of the system and supporting analytical and experimental studies. The Phase I final report has been completed, and this executive summary highlights the principal findings described in that report.

These data are to be used for establishing possible community uses, e.g., space heating, domestic water heating, and industrial uses, of waste heat from the facility. Study of safety relief valve operation under ATWS conditions. [PWR]

A literature survey and analysis project has been performed to determine if recent (since mid-1975) data has been reported which could influence the current approach to predicting PWR relief valve capacity under ATWS conditions. This study was conducted by the Energy Technology Engineering Center for NRC. Results indicate that the current relief valve capacity model tends to predict less capacity than actually obtains; however, no experimental verification at PWR ATWS conditions was found. Other project objectives were to establish the availability of methods for evaluating reaction forces and back pressure effects on relief valve capacity, and to determine if facilities exist which are capable of testing PWR relief valves at ATWS conditions.

User's manual for CNVUFAC, the general dynamics heat-transfer radiation view factor program

CNVUFAC, the General Dynamics heat-transfer radiation veiw factor program, has been adapted for use on the LLL CDC 7600 computer system. The input and output have been modified, and a node incrementing logic was included to make the code compatible with the TRUMP thermal analyzer and related codes. The program performs the multiple integration necessary to evaluate the geometric black-body radiaton node to node view factors. Card image output that contains node number and view factor information is generated for input into the related program GRAY. Program GRAY is then used to include the effects of gray-body emissivities and multiple reflections, generating the effective gray-body view factors usable in TRUMP. CNVUFAC uses an elemental area summation scheme to evaluate the multiple integrals. The program permits shadowing and self-shadowing. The basic configuration shapes that can be considered are cylinders, cones, spheres, ellipsoids, flat plates, disks, toroids, and polynomials of revolution. Portions of these shapes can also be considered.

Linear variable differential transformer and its uses for in-core fuel rod behavior measurements

The linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) is an electromechanical transducer which produces an ac voltage proportional to the displacement of a movable ferromagnetic core. When the core is connected to the cladding of a nuclear fuel rod, it is capable of producing extremely accurate measurements of fuel rod elongation caused by thermal expansion. The LVDT is used in the Thermal Fuels Behavior Program at the U.S. Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) for measurements of nuclear fuel rod elongation and as an indication of critical heat flux and the occurrence of departure from nucleate boiling. These types of measurements provide important information about the behavior of nuclear fuel rods under normal and abnormal operating conditions. The objective of the paper is to provide a complete account of recent advances made in LVDT design and experimental data from in-core nuclear reactor tests which use the LVDT.

Evaluation of reaction kinetics for gas-powder systems

Kinetic models for the reaction between a gas and powder are presented and discussed. Rates from the progressive conversion model are dependent on the amount of material present. This model is described by an equation that yields both the rate constant and the reaction order. The phase boundary model produces rates for topochemical reactions which are dependent on the powder surface area. Applications of these models to uranium powder hydriding are discussed. Computer programs for analyzing data also are included. 6 figures.

Slicing tests of silicon to show the dependence of cutting rate on operating conditions are complete. Cutting rate is linear with cutting force per blade and bladehead speed, and inversely proportional to kerf width (loss) and kerf length. The dimensionless parameter of cutting efficiency is a good measure of the performance of a multiblade slicing system. Low contact pressure between the blades and the silicon workpiece result in increased wafer accuracy and cutting efficiency. Blade wear seems to be stable for all slicing tests, and is slightly lower with low cutting pressure. (WDM)

Electron microscope images obtained at about 3A resolution for Pr/sub 7/O/sub 12/ (and isomorphous Zr/sub 3/Sc/sub 4/O/sub 12/) are in excellent agreement with calculated images based upon the structure determined separately by total profile neutron powder diffraction analysis. The image calculation programs establish the efficacy of lattice image interpretation in structural terms for these types of related phases whose structures are as yet beyond conventional means to determine. Such images for several other intermediate phases are interpreted and structures proposed. Finally, images of crystals which can be made to undergo reaction within the microscope are interpreted according to the structures involved. These studies reveal the role of intergrowth and topotaxy in these systems. (auth)

This research program began January 6, 1976. Its objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of the floating substrate sheet growth process for the growth of silicon sheet. This process is an approach to the formation of single-crystal silicon by direct epitaxial conversion from a gaseous silane. Incoming feedstock gas impinges upon a silicon substrate which is floating upon a thin pool of liquid tin. Single-crystal silicon grows to the desired thickness by means of vapor phase epitaxy. Nucleation of fresh substrate silicon takes place by rapid growth from the edge of the growing sheet into a region at the surface of the liquid tin which is supersaturated in the silicon. The process lends itself to continuous operation with the growing sheet being continuously withdrawn from the growth zone. (WDM)

Status of U-235 fission as a cross section standard. [10 keV to 20 MeV]

A review is made of the current status of /sup 235/U fission cross section data from thermal to 20 MeV neutron energies. The accuracy achieved is compared with the 1 percent accuracy required of a reaction-cross-section standard throughout this range. The energy ranges from thermal to 10 keV, 10 keV to 0.8 MeV and 0.8 to 20 MeV are considered separately because of the different experimental techniques required in each. The goal of normalizing all fission cross sections to the thermal value and the current degree of success is discussed.

Treatment of waste lubricating oil using BERC/ERDA solvent

From data generated in the laboratory and pilot plant studies a quality rerefined oil can be produced via BERC/ERDA solvent extraction and clay treatment. Some of the important processing variables that determine the quality of the finished product are temperature of solvent extraction, type of clay used, temperature and time of clay treatment, and the atmosphere under which the oil is treated with clay. Yields of 75 percent based on water-distillate-free oil can be expected at the conditions used in pilot plant operations. The oils obtained could be compounded to produce a large number of high quality lubricating products. Unlike an acid-clay process where the acid sludges pose an environmental problem, the BERC/ERDA system produces a marketable sludge.
