Analysis of the National Energy Plan (open access)

Analysis of the National Energy Plan

The plan is treated by end-use sectors, except for utilities and fuel prices which are presented as separate topics. First, the specific strategies and policies contained in the April 20, 1977, White House Fact Sheet and the April 29, 1977, publication entitled, The National Energy Plan (NEP) are itemized. Next, a further explanation of several of the policies is provided based on information in HR 8631, The National Energy Act. Finally, an analysis of some of the implications of the NEP is performed. The analysis is oriented to aspects of the NEP that are pertinent to ERDA's conservation programs. After an overview, the topics are treated in the following order: industry; utilities; residences; buildings; transportation; and energy prices and availability.

Fabrication of a large plutonium sphere for use in LLL pulsed-sphere experiments. [Pu--1. 0% Ga alloy] (open access)

Fabrication of a large plutonium sphere for use in LLL pulsed-sphere experiments. [Pu--1. 0% Ga alloy]

Two plutonium-alloy hemispheres were cast, machined, and canned for use in pulsed-sphere experiments. LLL physicists will use the data from these experiments to improve physics codes. The total mass of Pu--1.0 wt percent Ga was 9.3 kg. The hemispherical shapes had a radius of 53.7 mm. Both hemispheres were cast with hollow polar cones. In one casting the cone was plugged; in the other casting the cone was left to allow fitting to the neutron generator. The hemispheres were electron beam welded into close-fitting stainless steel cans so they could be used in a non-plutonium area. This report describes the fabrication of the device, which is expected to have long-term research utility. 14 figures.

Integrated system for production of neutronics and photonics calculational constants. Volume 15, Part D. The LLL Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (ENDL): descriptions of individual evaluations for Z = 90 to 98

Evaluation procedures used to produce sets of evaluated data for the 33 heavy isotopes that fall in the range Z = 90 to Z = 98 are described. At the beginning of the discussion for each individual isotope, a computer-generated listing is given which summarizes the main properties of the data sets that are contained in the evaluation. (RWR)

LMFBR technology. FFTF cover-gas leakage calculation (open access)

LMFBR technology. FFTF cover-gas leakage calculation

The FFTF LMFBR is intended to have a near zero release of radioactive gases during normal reactor operation with 1% failed fuel. This report presents calculations which provide an approximation of these cover gas leakages. Data from ongoing static and dynamic seal leak tests at AI are utilized. Leakage through both elastomeric and metallic seals in all sub-assemblies and penetrations comprising the reactor cover gas containment during reactor operation system are included.

Performance studies of varian VPM-154D. 6D VPM-154A/1. 6L static crossed field photomultipliers

Characteristics have been measured for the Varian VPM-154D.6D and VPM-154A/1.6L Static Crossed Field Photomultipliers. Some typical photomultiplier characteristics such as: gain, dark current, quantum efficiency, and rise-time--are compared with data provided by the manufacturer. Photomultiplier characteristics generally not available from the manufacturer, such as: transit time, FWHM of the output pulse, peak output current measurement and multiphotoelectron time resolution were measured and are discussed.

User's guide to program PF for permanent file archiving and retrieval. [CNDENSE purges specified tape files and consolidates those remaining, for CDC 7600 computer]

Program PF provides a method for a 7600 user to copy his disk files to magnetic tape(s). When at a later time the user wishes to attach a disk file which has been purged, program PF will retrieve the file from an archive tape and catalog it on disk. A disk file called ARCHIVEDIRECTORY, which contains information about each file, is maintained by PF. The program CNDENSE, which purges specified files from user archive tapes and consolidates the remaining ones, is also briefly described. (RWR)
