Proposal for an Experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory Nuclear Levels as Analyzers of High Energy Interactions (open access)

Proposal for an Experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory Nuclear Levels as Analyzers of High Energy Interactions

We propose to study diffractive phenomena caused by 100 BeV pions, using a new technique, which consists in associating with the high energy interaction, the detection of photons resulting from the de-excitation of nuclear levels. Knowledge of the quantum numbers both for the ground state and the nuclear levels of the nuclei used, adds information as to the type of interaction. In particular, the use of the 4.4 MeV level of Carbon guarantees that the exchange quantum has isotopic spin 0. In addition, evidence resulting from our tests at Berkeley seems to further encourage the notion that this level selects to a good extent phenomena of the diffractive type. We ask for 150 hours of running on a 100 BeV/c pion beam.

Mechanical structure of the Mirror Hybrid Reactor Power Plant (open access)

Mechanical structure of the Mirror Hybrid Reactor Power Plant

The mechanical structure of the LLL/GA Mirror Hybrid Reactor vessel is briefly discussed. Functional requirements and over-all design considerations leading to selection of a post-tensioned concrete reactor vessel and a modular blanket approach are indicated. Module design life of four years, module replacement, capability and remote fueling are provided by the chosen structural design. (RME)

Electrical discharge in gases: a technique for detecting metal anomalies (open access)

Electrical discharge in gases: a technique for detecting metal anomalies

Optical ionization effects in gases appear to be very sensitive indicators of nonuniformities caused by contamination, deformation, and other factors affecting a metal surface. These optical effects are influenced by surface electron emission, which is influenced in turn by the chemical, metallurgical, and mechanical condition of the metal surface. Based on these effects, a general technique for inspection of critical parts that is fast, inexpensive, nondestructive, and not limited by size or geometry is presented. Ionization effects that reveal nonuniformities and were recorded with standard photographic equipment are shown.

Performance of Shiva as a laser fusion irradiation facility

Shiva is a 20 beam Nd:Glass Laser and Target Irradiation Facility at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The laser system and integrated target facility evolved during the last year from a large, untested, experimental laser system to a target irradiation facility which has provided significant laser driven inertial confinement fusion data. The operation of the facility is discussed.

Dynamic analysis of LOFT reactor flow skirt/core filler assembly for LOCA + SSE (open access)

Dynamic analysis of LOFT reactor flow skirt/core filler assembly for LOCA + SSE

A detailed dynamic analysis of the LOFT reactor core support structures was performed to determine the ability of the flow skirt/core filler and hold-down springs to withstand Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) plus Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) loadings. A double-ended offset shear occurring in 15 msec (5 msec break time + msec for offset to occur) in the intact loop at the reactor vessel nozzle provided the basis for LOCA loads. The flow skirt/core filler and lower core support structure separate from the core barrel approximately 0.068 in. as a result of the hot leg LOCA. This small displacement and the resulting impact loads produce stresses in the springs, core barrel, flow skirt/core filler, and shear pins within allowables as specified in Section III of the ASME Code for faulted conditions.

Preliminary study of cross-field plasma injection in 2XIIB (open access)

Preliminary study of cross-field plasma injection in 2XIIB

Preliminary results are presented of a study of cross-field plasma injection in the 2XIIB mirror machine. Plasma accelerated by a coaxial deflagration gun was observed to pass 3.5M across the vacuum field, and some trapping was observed when the gun plasma intersected a plasma streaming along B at the center of the magnetic well. Parameters for the experiment are: gun plasma kinetic energy 50 to 200 eV, n/sub gun/ = 3 x 10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/, streaming plasma 25 to 50 eV and n/sub streaming/ = 6 x 10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/, duration of both 100 to 200 ..mu..sec. For the trapped plasma, n = 2.4 x 10/sup 12/ cm/sup -3/, and the decay time is t/sub /sup 1///sub 2// = 400 ..mu..sec consistent with Coulomb scattering loss at 100 eV mean ion energy.

Dry scram evaluation (open access)

Dry scram evaluation

The analysis performed by Todd Shipyards concerning the ability of the LOFT CRDMs to withstand a dry scram is presented. A ''dry scram'' could result in the CRDM components yielding; however, it would probably not render the CRDMs inoperable. It also concluded that a dry scram is highly unlikely based on a typical LOFT depressurization curve and the temperature of the fluid in the upper pressure housing. At the time of scram, the fluid in the upper pressure housing will not flash to steam owing to the pressure-temperature relationship existing during the scram cycle.

Technical Specification Figure 3-1, PCS temperature vs. pressure

The bases and procedure for plotting LOFT Technical Specification Figure 3-1, PCS Temperature vs. Pressure is presented. The curves define fracture toughness limits for the carbon steel vessels (Reactor vessel, pressurizer and steam generator) in the primary coolant system (PCS). An allowance is included for the lag between measured fluid temperature and metal temperature of the carbon steel components for the heat up situation. As a result the curves are conservative for the cooldown situation. However, no allowances for expected pressure and temperature instrument errors is included in the curves.
