Bubble Formation: A Bibliography (open access)

Bubble Formation: A Bibliography

Bubble phenomena have been given a new meaning with their study in relation to the kinetic behavior of reactors. Prior to their study in relation to physics, the bulk of work on bubble phenomena concerned naval engineering problems of behavior in cavitation and water entry behavior. This bibliography is intended to fill the need of the reactor physicist as well as the naval engineer. An attempt has been made to include all available references on bubble phenomena and associated effects. A subject index has been purposely omitted. It is felt that the breakdown in content headings is sufficient to ascertain areas of interest. There will be overlapping of headings and to find all possible entries, a search through the headings may be desirable. To increase the usefulness of this bibliography the location of an abstract has been cited wherever possible following the reference. Classified reports are included; however, their titles contain no classified information. Sources used in compiling this bibliography are: Chemical Abstracts, Industrial Arts Index, Applied Mechanics Review, Nuclear Science Abstracts, the AEC Abstracts of Classified Literature, the AEC card catalogs available at Atomics International, and the bibliographic services of Armed Services Technical Information agency. Calculation of Shielding for Mark II Accelerator (open access)

Calculation of Shielding for Mark II Accelerator

The proper roof thickness to correspond with a given side wall thickness has been estimated fro experience with the 184 feet cyclotron, which has indicated that a roof of about 1 1/2 feet should accompany a wall of 5 feet, and a roof of 4 feet should accompany a wall of 15 feet. For the roof area involved, this should bring about the condition that down-scattered neutrons in the working areas are but a small fraction of the neutrons coming through the side walls.

Comparison of performance of experimental and conventional cage designs and materials for 75-millimeter-bore cylindrical roller bearings at high speed (open access)

Comparison of performance of experimental and conventional cage designs and materials for 75-millimeter-bore cylindrical roller bearings at high speed

From Summary: "The results of two investigations, one to determine the relative merits of four experimental and two conventional design 75-millimeter-bore (size 215) cylindrical roller bearings and one to determine the relative merits of nodular iron and bronze as cage materials for this size and type of bearing, are presented in this report. Nine test bearings were operated over a range of dn values (product of bearing bore in mm and shaft speed in r.p.m) from 0.3 x 10(6) to 2.3 x 20(6), radial loads for 7 to 1613 pounds, and oil flows from 2 to 8 pounds per minute with a single-jet circulatory oil feed. Of the six bearings used to evaluate designs, four were experimental types with outer-race-riding cages and inner-race-guided rollers, and two were conventional types, one with outer-race-guided rollers and cage and one with inner-race-guided rollers and cage."

Design Study for a 15-BeV Accelerator (open access)

Design Study for a 15-BeV Accelerator

This report is the culmination of a year of progress and planning in the high-energy particle field. During this year the Brookhaven Cosmotron has been successfully completed and brought into operation for research at 2.3 Bev. Preliminary experimental results with the copious output of π-mesons are in process of publication. Multiple production of mesons has been observed, a few V-particles detected, and the interactions of π-mesons in hydrogen have been studied. Yet it already appears that higher energies will be needed to produce and study the several new heavy particles detected in cosmic ray observations.

A Design Study of Leading-Edge Inlets for Unswept Wings

Note presenting a practical method, employing a lofting technique, for determining the profile coordinates of an air inlet for the leading edge of an airfoil from formulas which are dependent only on the airfoil coordinates and on the height of the opening. It was found that the base-profile concept of thin-airfoil theory could be applied to a ducted airfoil with satisfactory results. Results regarding design inlets, modified inlets, and end-closure shape are provided.

Determination of Rare Earths in Refined Uranium : Topical Report (open access)

Determination of Rare Earths in Refined Uranium : Topical Report

Abstract: "Rare-earth analyses were performed on several samples of refined uranium oxide and nitrate, using a modified cellulose column procedure. Rare earths were not detectable in samples of 0.03 shotgun of less. Detection limits were from 0.0005 to 0.015 ppm. Negligible quantities of low-cross-section rare earths were found in less pure uranium samples, obtained during start-up operations of the pilot plant at the Feed Materials Production Center, primarily those rare earths of greater than average abundance in nature. No correlation was found between rare-earth content and shotgun values. Rare earths do not appear to be contributing significantly to the neutron absorption of refined uranium. A modified cellulose column procedure, which includes a preconcentration solvent-extraction step, is described. Radioactive tracer tests indicating rare-earth recoveries by the method of >98 per cent are reported."

DIMENSIONAL INSTABILITY OF URANIUM--III. Third Annual Progress Report for June 30, 1957 to June 30, 1958 (open access)

DIMENSIONAL INSTABILITY OF URANIUM--III. Third Annual Progress Report for June 30, 1957 to June 30, 1958

The mechanism of dimensional instability of uramium is under investigation. Ih order to confirm an assumption of the diffusion theory, the magnitude of diffusion anisatropy in alpha-uranium single crystuls is being determincd by measurement of the self-diffusion coefficients along principal crystullographic directions. lnitial measurements have yielded values of 5 x 10/ sup -15/ cm/sup 2//sec along the (010! and 4 x 10/sup -15/ cm/sup 2/ sec along the (OOl!. These values are being rechecked. in addition, in- -pile experiments designed to further clarify the effect of grain size on growth under irradiation have been initiated. Experimental Investigation at High Subsonic Speeds of the Rolling-Stability Derivatives of a 1/22 Scale Model of the Republic F-105 Airplane

Report presenting an investigation of the rolling-stability derivatives for a model of the Republic F-105 airplane over a range of Mach numbers and angles of attack. The model retained damping in roll through the test ranges, but values of the damping varied considerably with angles of attack. Derivatives of yawing moment and lateral force due to rolling generally followed previously indicated trends.

Experimental investigation of free-convection heat transfer in vertical tube at large Grashof numbers (open access)

Experimental investigation of free-convection heat transfer in vertical tube at large Grashof numbers

Report presents the results of an investigation conducted to study free-convection heat transfer in a stationary vertical tube closed at the bottom. The walls of the tube were heated, and heated air in the tube was continuously replaced by fresh cool air at the top. The tube was designed to provide a gravitational field with Grashof numbers of a magnitude comparable with those generated by the centrifugal field in rotating-blade coolant passages (10(8) to 10(13)). Local heat-transfer coefficients in the turbulent-flow range and the temperature field within the fluid were obtained.

An Exploratory Investigation of Some Types of Aeroelastic Instability of Open and Closed Bodies of Revolution Mounted on Slender Struts (open access)

An Exploratory Investigation of Some Types of Aeroelastic Instability of Open and Closed Bodies of Revolution Mounted on Slender Struts

"Aeroelastic instability phenomena of isolated open and closed rigid bodies of revolution free to move under elastic restraint have been investigated experimentally at low speeds by means of models suspended at zero angles of attack and yaw on slender flexible struts from a wind tunnel ceiling. Three types of instability were observed - flutter similar to classical bending-torsion flutter, divergence, and an uncoupled oscillatory instability which consists in nonviolent continuous or intermittent small-amplitude oscillations involving only angular deformations. The speeds at which this oscillatory instability starts were found to be as low as about one-third of the speed at flutter or divergence and to depend on the shape of the body, particularly that of the afterbody, and on the relative location of the elastic axis" (p. 1).
