Dissociation of H₂⁺ by Photons (open access)

Dissociation of H₂⁺ by Photons

Abstract: "A measurement was made of the dissociation of vibrationally-excited H2+ ions by photons having quantum energy in the vicinity of 4 e.v. The calculated cross section from theory is 3 x 10-(-18) cm-2. The experimental result is 10-(-17) cm-2; a factor of 10 uncertainty is present because the photon intensity was unknown by that factor."

Preliminary Analysis of Problem of Determining Experimental Performance of Air-Cooled Turbine 1: Methods for Determining Heat-Transfer Characteristics

In determining the experimental performance of an air-cooled turbine, the heat-transfer characteristics must be evaluated. The suggested formulas that are required to determine these characteristics are presented. The formulas have a form in which dependent parameters are expressed as unknown functions of independent parameters. Methods of experimenting to determine these functions are suggested. In some cases general heat-transfer discussions that lead to the suggested forms of the formulas are given.

Recent Experimental Flutter Studies

Report presenting some highlights of recent experimental studies of flutter at high speeds. Flutter problems have become more varied with the advent of transonic flight and importance of aeroelasticity, and the flutter field has merged with other aspect of aeroelasticity such as divergence and buffeting. The two main subjects of flutter, classical flutter and stall flutter, are explored in these studies.

The effects of blowing over various trailing-edge flaps on an NACA 0006 airfoil section, comparisons with various types of flaps on other airfoil sections, and an analysis of flow and power relationships for blowing systems

Report presenting an investigation of three phases: an experimental investigation of a thin airfoil with blowing over a trailing-edge flap, a comparison of the results of the experimental investigation with the results of other similar investigations, and a theoretical study of the relationships among the air-flow and power parameters for the general blowing case. Gas Cooled Power Reactor Coolant Choice (open access)

Gas Cooled Power Reactor Coolant Choice

The current status of helium and carbon dioxide technology is described in the light of the Gas Cooled Reactor Program requiremoents. The problem of containing high-pressure helium at high temperature is discussed, and it is concluded that, by proper attention to the design, construction and maintenance of a plant, a high degree of helium leak-tightness can be achieved at small additional cost when compared with a carbon dioxide system. What is more, the cost of making up helium losses in a practically achievable system is estimated to be small compared with other fixed and operating costs. Graphite-carbon dioxide reaction data are reviewed. It is shown that carbon dioxide at atmospheric pressure and low flow rates should be compatible with a graphite mooderator up to 525 C. No data are available at the high pressures and fiow rates that would be encountered in power reactors. Significantiy higher oxidation rates may result, however, perhaps limiting bulk moderator temperatures to 450 to 500 C. Improved carbon materials, protective coatings and inhibitors, and/or operating practices may be developed that will allow significant future increases in these limiting temperatures. (auth)
