Design and development study: Task 2 replacement RM Line 234-5 Building D.O. 100991

The Dry Chemistry Process of the RM Line provides the means for converting plutonium oxalate to plutonium tetrafluoride. This process consists of drying the oxalate cake and then converting to the tetrafluoride by passing HF gas at elevated temperature through the filtered cake. Improvement to or replacement of the present Task II system is being investigated because of the high maintenance costs and unreliability of the present system. This study is one of several being conducted under the Chemical Processing and Reduction Design and Development Program for improving Task II operation. This report describes a Task II system using round filter boats and vertical hydrofluorination furnaces.

A DESIGN STUDY OF A LOW POWER AQUEOUS HOMOGENEOUS BOILING REACTOR POWER PLANT (open access)

A DESIGN STUDY OF A LOW POWER AQUEOUS HOMOGENEOUS BOILING REACTOR POWER PLANT

This design study describes a reactor and associated power plant that has been designed to produce 100 kv of net electric power and 400 kv of hot water space heating at a total thermal output of 1300 kw. The fuel consists of a solution of UO/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ in light water. Power is removed from the core by boiling the fuel solution and transferring the heat to the secondary steam system by condensing primary water on the external surface of a bayonet type boiler and boiling secondary water within the tubes. Saturated steam, produced in the boiler at 225 psia (Full Power) is used to drive a turbo generator, Extraction steam from the turbine is used, at a reduced pressure, for space heating. The initial loading of the reactor is approximately 4.8 kg of U/sub 235/ and operation based on an average load factor of 80% will require fuel addition at the rate of about 580 grams per year. It may be desirable to replace the fuel in the core after a period of 5 years operation due to the accumulation of corrosion products. The reactor control is affected automatically by power demand. The major objective has been to design …

Final report on Production Test 105-526-E -- Elimination of lime as a process water additive (open access)

Final report on Production Test 105-526-E -- Elimination of lime as a process water additive

Interest in using low pH water (pH 6.5--7.3) for cooling Hanford reactors dates back to carly laboratory investigation. Work has consistently shown that the use of this low pH water should reduce overall corrosion rates of the aluminum components. Work done by Draley at the Clinton Laboratories with simulated Columbia River water showed that aluminum corrosion rates at 80 C were minimized at pH 6.5. These results were later substantiated by work at Hanford by the CMX Project. (Z) In spite of these results. the original specifications called for the process water pH to be maintained in the range 7.5--7.8. This report details the data obtained from tests on the 100-F reactor at Hanford.

Hanford Atomic Products Operation monthly report, May 1955

This document presents a summary of work and progress at the Hanford Engineer Works for May 1955. The report is divided into sections by department. A plant wide general summary is included at the beginning of the report, after which the departmental summaries begin. The Manufacturing Department reports plant statistics, and summaries for the Metal Preparation, Reactor and Separation sections. The Engineering Department`s section summarizes work for the Technical, Design, and Project Sections. Costs for the various departments are presented in the Financial Department`s summary. The Medical, Radiological Sciences, Utilities and General Services, Employee and Public Relations, and Community Real Estate and Services departments have sections presenting their monthly statistics, work, progress, and summaries.
