Planning phase for the New Mexico Improved Oil Recovery Project. Final report (open access)

Planning phase for the New Mexico Improved Oil Recovery Project. Final report

This project is a collaborative effort with Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and a number of universities throughout the country. Field and laboratory tests were proposed to investigate advanced technologies in reservoir characterization, reservoir simulation, and recovery enhancement. Basically, the approach was to acquire an oilfield property for experimental purposes where interdisciplinary testing could be performed. Several researchers, especially in the academic area, would like to have access to field data and have expressed interest in participating in the project. A standardized dataset from a well-characterized site could be made available to anyone who is developing and validating new simulators. The data-gathering phase should be coordinated fully with the principal users of the data, and all data should be stored in an easily accessible form. A database for the New Mexico Improved Oil Recovery Project (NMIORP) could be established which would be designed for access by various computer networks. Initially, this project provided for a planning phase for the NMIORP. A field site, the Sulimar Queen Unit, has been acquired by New Mexico Tech, and the activities specified in the planning phase have been completed. A data acquisition well was drilled, logged, and cored. Geological and reservoir studies …

Enhanced durability of desulfurization sorbents for fluidized-bed applications (open access)

Enhanced durability of desulfurization sorbents for fluidized-bed applications

Advanced integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power systems require the development of high-temperature desulfurization sorbents capable of removing hydrogen sulfide from coal gasifier down to very low levels. The objective of this investigation was to identify and demonstrate methods for enhancing the long-term chemical reactivity and mechanical strength of zinc ferrite, a leading regenerable sorbent, for fluidized-bed applications. Fluidized sorbent beds offer significant potential in IGCC systems because of their ability to control the highly exothermic regeneration involved. However, fluidized beds require a durable, attrition-resistant sorbent in the 100--300 {mu}m size range. A bench-scale high-temperature, high- pressure (HTHP) fluidized-bed reactor (7.6-cm I.D.) system capable of operating up to 24 atm and 800{degree}C was designed, built and tested. A total of 175 sulfidation-regeneration cycles were carried out using KRW-type coal gas with various zinc ferrite formulations. A number of sorbent manufacturing techniques including spray drying, impregnation, crushing and screening, and granulation were investigated. While fluidizable sorbents prepared by crushing durable pellets and screening had acceptable sulfur capacity, they underwent excessive attrition during multicycle testing. The sorbent formulations prepared by a proprietary technique were found to have excellent attrition resistance and acceptable chemical reactivity during multicycle testing. However, zinc ferrite was found …

Re-evaluation of the 1962 Mark VI-B dynamic tests regarding reactivity coefficients (open access)

Re-evaluation of the 1962 Mark VI-B dynamic tests regarding reactivity coefficients

The 1962 Mark VI-B rod tests have been re-evaluated. A significantly lower (more negative) coolant coefficient is now ascribed to that test, {minus}1 pcm/Deg-C vs the previously reported +2 pcm/Deg-C. The change from the previous value is because of revisions to delayed neutron constants and accounting for spatial effects. The new value is in reasonable agreement with the currently calculated value of {minus}2 pcm/Deg-C, considering measurement and calculational uncertainties. Therefore, the authors conclude that the current analytic models for physics and transient analysis methodology (GLASS, GRIMHX & TRIMHX, AND MARY) are fully consistent with 1962 test observations, and that there is no basis for assigning a calculational bias or increasing uncertainty allowances.
