The OH and MH modules of the EC calorimeter consist essentially of metal boxes containing calorimetry plates. These plates can contribute to the module behavior only in compression, with this effect being enhanced if the plates are compressively preloaded against the skin of the box prior to assembly. The finite element method can be applied in the analysis of these modules. Its advantages are: 1. The structural components can be modeled with less simplification than beam theory allows. The angled faces of the OH modules can be represented exactly, and the shear deflections inherent in short, deep beams will be a natural part of the solution. 2. The finite element method can be subjected to any number of realistic loadings. 3. With proper mesh density relevant stresses can be extracted. The disadvantages of the method are that exact modeling of the internal plates is difficult, time consuming, and computationally expensive. It is of interest, then, to verify how well a simple model of the structural components only (i.e., the skin, endplates, and any structural internal plates) predicts deflections and stresses which can be relied on for design purposes. Theoretical discussions of the propagation of pulses of laser radiation through atomic or molecular vapor rely on a number of traditional approximations for idealizing the radiation and the molecules, and for quantifying their mutual interaction by various equations of propagation (for the radiation) and excitation (for the molecules). In treating short-pulse phenomena it is essential to consider coherent excitation phenomena of the sort that is manifest in Rabi oscillations of atomic or molecular populations. Such processes are not adequately treated by rate equations for excitation nor by rate equations for radiation. As part of a more comprehensive treatment of the coupled equations that describe propagation of short pulses, this memo presents background discussion of the equations that describe the field. This memo discusses the origin, in Maxwell's equations, of the wave equation used in the description of pulse propagation. It notes the separation into lamellar and solenoidal (or longitudinal and transverse) and positive and negative frequency parts. It mentions the possibility of separating the polarization field into linear and nonlinear parts, in order to define a susceptibility or index of refraction and, from these, a phase and group velocity. This short report explains the parameters, and their basis, of the D-Zero calorimeter multiplan spread sheet Macintosh Multiplan worksheets have been found to be a valuable asset to the D-Zero design effort. The spread sheet contains parameters (constants) and results that come from the parameters. The full effect of changes in D-Zero calorimeter parameters can be calculated quite easily with Multiplan. When a change in a parameter is made, any results that pertain to that parameter automatically change also. This report will explain how some of the unobvious results were obtained.

Electrical energy consumption data have been recorded for several hundred submetered residential structures in Middle Tennessee. All houses were constructed with a common ``energy package.`` Specifically, daily cooling usage data have been collected for 130 houses for the 1985 and 1986 cooling seasons, and monthly heating usage data for 186 houses have been recorded by occupant participation over a seven-year period. Cooling data have been analyzed using an SPSSx multiple regression analysis and results are compared to several cooling models. Heating, base, and total energy usage are also analyzed and regression correlation coefficients are determined as a function of several house parameters.
