ORBITAL SYMMETRY CONTROL IN THE NITRONE-OXAZIRIDINE SYSTEM.NITRONE PHOTOSTATIONARY STATES (open access)

ORBITAL SYMMETRY CONTROL IN THE NITRONE-OXAZIRIDINE SYSTEM.NITRONE PHOTOSTATIONARY STATES

Recent the orbital symmetry rules have been shown to apply to hetero-atom systems such as nitrone thermal cycloaddition reactions and the thermal and photochemical aziridine ring cleavage at the C-C bond. The concerted photocyclization is disrotatory and the reverse thermal cleavage is conrotatory in these molecules with four {pi} electrons. In contrast to the azomethine ylide-aziridine system, the stereochemistry of the nitrone photocyclization to oxaziridine can only be observed on carbon and nitrogen atoms because the oxygen atom has lone pair electrons instead of substituents. For the reverse thermal ring opening of oxaziridine to the nitrone, the two possible conrotatory motions of C-O bond cleavage should result in a mixture of the cis and trans-isomers of the nitrone, in contrast to the photoclosure which should be stereospecific.

Shock-Absorbing Materials, Report 2: Cellular Concrete as a Backpacking Material

Partial abstract: "The use of low-density cellular concrete, having an oven-dry unit weight of 50 pcf or less, as a backpacking material for deeply buried protective structures was studied. Cellular concrete was found to be suitable for this type of application. A number of physical properties of cellular concrete were determined to provide input to design codes" (p. 4).

Sprayed PETN charges. Final report (open access)

Sprayed PETN charges. Final report

A project for the Air Force Special Weapons Center is to develop, test, and deliver thin explosive matrices on aluminum and/or copper foil Mylar laminates. This report briefly discusses problems encountered with the recording of manganin pressure gage data. Four tests were fired on November 5 and 6 as an early attempt at recording pressure and impulse from HE loads. Problems encountered during this series were noise on the manganin gage oscilloscope records induced from the capacitor discharge current, and extreme sloping of the baseline of the pulsed manganin gages. HE tests were discontinued at this time until the gages and the power supplies could be studied for causes of the sloping baselines.

Stability of Phase Oscillations Under Two Applied Frequencies (open access)

Stability of Phase Oscillations Under Two Applied Frequencies

Stability crileria are developed for the stability of motions of particles in a bucket while subjected to an acceleration voltage at small frequency difference {Delta}{nu}. The motion is stable if {Delta}{nu} {>=} {nu}{sub s} where {nu}{sub s} is the phase oscíllation frequency. This is essentially the same criterion as that the buckets not touch.

Study of the /sup 50/V nucleus with the (/sup 3/He,d), (/sup 3/He,. cap alpha. ), (/sup 3/He,p), and (/sup 3/He,p. gamma. ) reactions. [Angular distribution, 13 and 22 MeV, analog states, DWBA, J,. pi. , spectroscopic factors, angular momentum, transitions]

The nucleus /sup 50/V with a ground-state configuration (..pi..f/sub 7/2/)/sup 3/(..nu..f/sub 7/2/)/sup -1/ was studied with the /sup 49/Ti(/sup 3/He,d)/sup 50/V, /sup 51/V)/sup 3/He,..cap alpha..)/sup 50/V, and /sup 48/Ti(/sup 3/He,p)/sup 50/V, and /sup 48/Ti(/sup 3/He,p..gamma..)/sup 50/V reactions induced by the /sup 3/He/sup + +/ beam from the tandem Van de Graaff at the Argonne National Laboratory. The angular distributions from (/sup 3/He,d), (/sup 3/He,..cap alpha..), and (/sup 3/He,p) reactions induced by 22-MeV /sup 3/He were studied with overall energy resolution widths of 20, 30, and 42 keV, respectively. The reactions (/sup 3/He,p) and (/sup 3/He,p..gamma..) were also studied at an incident energy of 13 MeV to obtain the ..gamma.. decay of /sup 50/V levels (including two 0/sup +/ isobaric analog states) in which the neutron-proton pair is transferred with zero angular momentum. The angular distributions of the charged-particle reactions were analyzed with the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA), and spectroscopic factors have been extracted for the one-nucleon transfer reactions. The two-nucleon transfer reaction (/sup 3/He,p) was analyzed with the DWBA on the assumption that the neutron-proton pair is transferred as a deuteron. The angular momentum L/sub np/ of the transferred deuteron is established for most of the levels, and the possibility …

Study on the Adsorption of Radioisotopes in Solution: I - Adsorption of Pu(IV) in a Sulfuric Acid Media

The adsorption of tetravalent plutonium on glass and platinum in a sulfuric acid solution was studied in the concentration range of the order of 10sup(-5)M. The adsorption is reversible, decreases with an increase in acidity and, in all the cases examined, quite weak (less than 0.01%). It follows the Freundlich isotherm on glass and the Langmuir isotherm on platinum.

Test of Proportional Wire Chambers in Hybrid Systems (open access)

Test of Proportional Wire Chambers in Hybrid Systems

This is an agreement between the National Accelerator Laboratory and Professor I. Pless of MIT representing the experimenters to provide selected instrumentation for the beam to the 30-inch bubble chamber, and to use the hybrid chamber for an experiment. This document contains an enumeration of the major items needed for the proper execution of Experiment No. 154 as expressed in the proposal for the experiment, subsequent correspondence, and the draft agreement. This agreement covers phases I and II of the experiment. In Phase I the experimenters will design, construct and bring into operation a complete upstream proportional chamber system. This system will tag incident beam particles as to type by correlating the Cerenkov signals furnished by NAL with the proper incoming particle. In addition, the system will measure the position of the incident particle which passed through the momentum slit. The system will contain three proportional wire chambers (3 planes each) which will provide data suitable for defining the incident beam both as to position and angle. The experimenters will furnish the computer, magnetic tape units, programs, and all necessary readout and interface hardware. When the system is installed, debugged, documented and completely functional, it will be turned over to …
