This summary report was prepared by RL Production Planning and Development Branch. It presents the status as of June 30, 1971 of 02 Process Development activities performed and sponsored by the Atlantic Richfield Hanford Company for the AEC Division of Production. Prior work, current accomplishments (during last half of FY 1971), and future work are covered. A summary of the Process Development costs is given on Page 4. A more detailed description of these activities is contained in ARHCO Annual Report Process Development, ARH-1968-B, June 30, 1971. The paper discusses the basic production program, environmental and regulatory technology, and waste management activities.

Stability of Phase Oscillations Under Two Applied Frequencies (open access)

Stability of Phase Oscillations Under Two Applied Frequencies

Stability crileria are developed for the stability of motions of particles in a bucket while subjected to an acceleration voltage at small frequency difference {Delta}{nu}. The motion is stable if {Delta}{nu} {>=} {nu}{sub s} where {nu}{sub s} is the phase oscíllation frequency. This is essentially the same criterion as that the buckets not touch.

Study of the /sup 50/V nucleus with the (/sup 3/He,d), (/sup 3/He,. cap alpha. ), (/sup 3/He,p), and (/sup 3/He,p. gamma. ) reactions. [Angular distribution, 13 and 22 MeV, analog states, DWBA, J,. pi. , spectroscopic factors, angular momentum, transitions]

The nucleus /sup 50/V with a ground-state configuration (..pi..f/sub 7/2/)/sup 3/(..nu..f/sub 7/2/)/sup -1/ was studied with the /sup 49/Ti(/sup 3/He,d)/sup 50/V, /sup 51/V)/sup 3/He,..cap alpha..)/sup 50/V, and /sup 48/Ti(/sup 3/He,p)/sup 50/V, and /sup 48/Ti(/sup 3/He,p..gamma..)/sup 50/V reactions induced by the /sup 3/He/sup + +/ beam from the tandem Van de Graaff at the Argonne National Laboratory. The angular distributions from (/sup 3/He,d), (/sup 3/He,..cap alpha..), and (/sup 3/He,p) reactions induced by 22-MeV /sup 3/He were studied with overall energy resolution widths of 20, 30, and 42 keV, respectively. The reactions (/sup 3/He,p) and (/sup 3/He,p..gamma..) were also studied at an incident energy of 13 MeV to obtain the ..gamma.. decay of /sup 50/V levels (including two 0/sup +/ isobaric analog states) in which the neutron-proton pair is transferred with zero angular momentum. The angular distributions of the charged-particle reactions were analyzed with the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA), and spectroscopic factors have been extracted for the one-nucleon transfer reactions. The two-nucleon transfer reaction (/sup 3/He,p) was analyzed with the DWBA on the assumption that the neutron-proton pair is transferred as a deuteron. The angular momentum L/sub np/ of the transferred deuteron is established for most of the levels, and the possibility …

LMFBR Blanket Physics Project progress report No. 2 (open access)

LMFBR Blanket Physics Project progress report No. 2

This is the second annual report of an experimental program for the investigation of the neutronics of benchmark mock-ups of LMFBR blankets. Work was devoted primarily to measurements on Blanket Mock-Up No. 2, a simulation of a typical large LMFBR radial blanket and its steel reflector. Activation traverses and neutron spectra were measured in the blanket; calculations of activities and spectra were made for comparison with the measured data. The heterogeneous self- shielding effect for $sup 238$U capture was found to be the most important factor affecting the comparison. Optimization and economic studies were made which indicate that the use of a high-albedo reflector material such as BeO or graphite may improve blanket neutronics and economics. (auth)

Heat Flow Research and Exploration for Geothermal Power Black Rock Desert, Nevada (open access)

Heat Flow Research and Exploration for Geothermal Power Black Rock Desert, Nevada

Measurements of heat flow near the earth's surface provide the most reliable boundary conditions to be employed in the calculation of models of subsurface temperatures and the spatial distribution of crustal sources of heat. The subsurface temperature and heat source distributions, in turn, have many broad implications in the explanation of several geologically-observed phenomena and must be considered in exploration for geothermal power. In this report, several aspects of modern heat flow research are briefly summarized and reviewed. These comments are then used as a basis for a heat flow research project that would provide more definite data on the geothermal power potential of the Black Rock Desert area in northwestern Nevada.

Brief summary concerning strategic withholding (nuclear parsimony) (open access)

Brief summary concerning strategic withholding (nuclear parsimony)

This memorandum provides a brief summary on thoughts concerning `Strategic Withholding` (or perhaps, `Nuclear Parsimony`). It is chiefly meant to further support the view that there should be other significant doctrines besides `Brute-Force Retaliation`. The basic doctrinal argument is that it may be broadly disadvantageous to fire one`s missiles in equal, or `total` retaliation. It may be better to reply only softly, or not at all. The basic justification rests on an assumption of extended war, and on a logic addressed to what`s best for the surviving population and capability at any given point. In most strategic wargame exercises, it is rarely apparent that this principle is taken into account. The essential point of argument is that an extended war is not so different from peacetime posturing.

The Effect of Time Ordering on the Lyman α Profile (open access)

The Effect of Time Ordering on the Lyman α Profile

Report investigating the effects of time-ordering over the complete line profile using a unified theory of spectral line broadening previously developed. The behavior of the time-ordered thermal average and un-time-ordered thermal average are compared. The Fourier transform of the thermal average is obtained analytically. Calculations for the line profile of the Lyman-[functional symbol alpha] line of hydrogen are presented and are representative in that the full thermal average is replaced by the thermal average with the electron velocity distribution approximated by f(v)=[functional symbol alpha] (v-vav) where vav is the thermal velocity for the plasma in question.
