200-GeV proton-proton elastic scattering at high transverse momentum (open access)

200-GeV proton-proton elastic scattering at high transverse momentum

This is a proposal to study p-p elastic scattering at the highest possible P{sub {perpendicular}}{sup 2} at NAL, using a CH{sub 2} or H{sub 2} target placed directly in the extracted beam and a double arm spectrometer. We expect to be able to set an upper limit at the level d{sigma}/dt/d{sigma}/dt{sub t=0} {approx} 10{sup -14}. This would be sufficient to determine if there are exactly three regions in the p-p interaction with considerable precision.

ASYMMETRY IN n+ PHOTOPRODUCTION FROM A POLARIZED TARGET AT 5 AND16 GeV (open access)

ASYMMETRY IN n+ PHOTOPRODUCTION FROM A POLARIZED TARGET AT 5 AND16 GeV

The authors have measured the asymmetry in the cross section for the reaction {gamma}p {yields} {pi}{sup +}n between the two stages of polarization of the initial proton normal to the plane of scattering. The initial laboratory photon energies, k, were 5 GeV and 16 GeV, and the regions of momentum transfer, t, covered were 0.14 {le} {radical}-t {le} 1.01 GeV/c and 0.14 {le} {radical}-t {le} 0.78 GeV/c respectively. A butanol polarized target was used with the SLAC 20 GeV/c magnetic spectrometer. The data show a sizeable asymmetry at both 5 GeV and 16 GeV. The 16 GeV data peak at {radical}-t {approx} 0.30 GeV/c with an asymmetry of about -0.70, and the 5 GeV data pak at {radical}-t {approx} 0.80 GeV/c with an asymmetry of about -0.70. The direction of our normal to the scattering plane is along (photon in) x (pion out).

Behavior of high energy elastic scattering and total cross sections for pi+/- p, k+/- p, pp and p - anti-p (open access)

Behavior of high energy elastic scattering and total cross sections for pi+/- p, k+/- p, pp and p - anti-p

It is proposed to extend to the NAL energy range the investigation of elastic ''diffraction'' scattering and precision measurements of the total cross sections performed at BNL during the past decade. It is expected that this investigation will be of considerable interest and importance in regard to understanding the asymptotic behavior of forward and near forward scattering amplitudes. The investigation will be composed of two highly complementary parts, which in common utilize the same beam, most of the same equipment, and the same experimental area region. As our past experience has demonstrated, a knowledge of both the elastic ''diffraction'' scattering and the total cross sections to high precision is necessary to allow a meaningful theoretical analysis of either.

The Calculation of Rotational Energy Levels and Rotational Line Intensities in Diatomic Molecules (open access)

The Calculation of Rotational Energy Levels and Rotational Line Intensities in Diatomic Molecules

Report describing procedures for making quantum mechanical calculations of rotational energy levels and rotational line intensities in diatomic molecules. The procedures are illustrated by sample calculations. A familiarity with the material of this report should enable a practicing electronic spectroscropist to carry out, though in a rather mechanical way, his own theoretical calculations for molecules under experimental investigation.

CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF SODIUM SYSTEMS FINAL REPORT (open access)

CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF SODIUM SYSTEMS FINAL REPORT

BNWL-1407 summarizes information gained from the Chemical Analyses of Sodium Systems Program pursued by Battelle- Northwest over the period from July 1967 through June 1969. Tasks included feasibility studies for performing coulometric titration and polarographic determinations of oxygen in sodium, and the development of new separation techniques for sodium impurities and their subsequent analyses. The program was terminated ahead of schedule so firm conclusions were not obtained in all areas of the work. At least 40 coulometric titrations were carried out and special test cells were developed for coulometric application. Data indicated that polarographic measurements are theoretically feasible, but practical application of the method was not verified. An emission spectrographic procedure for trace metal impurities was developed and published. Trace metal analysis by a neutron activation technique was shown to be feasible; key to the success of the activation technique was the application of a new ion exchange resin which provided a sodium separation factor of 10{sup 11}. Preliminary studies on direct scavenging of trace metals produced no conclusive results.

Douglas United Nuclear, Inc., annual report of research and development (open access)

Douglas United Nuclear, Inc., annual report of research and development

In FY-1970, the former ten missions which had existed under the Richland Five-Year 02 Research and Development Program were consolidated into four program areas as follows: Basic Production; Product Flexibility; Environmental and Regulatory Technology; and Waste Management. Each program area has included one or more separate distinct programs, some of which were basic to sustaining and improving production operations while others were directed to broadening plant versatility for producing potentially marketable products. Midway through FY-1970, the shutdown of KW Reactor with subsequent curtailment of funding resulted in a substantial reduction in the level of effort in both of these directions. Consequently, during the balance of FY-1970 improvement effort has primarily been concentrated on N Reactor operation, and plant versatility effort was virtually stopped. The research and development reported herein represents progress made during the period January 1, 1970, through May 30, 1970, and, contrary to recent annual and semiannual reports, includes only that work primarily funded with 02 R&D funds. No process technology funded activities are included, these being reported regularly in Douglas United Nuclear Monthly Reports.
